I remember the intro starts with the girl in her village living with her mother. Some of the villagers are wanting to rebel. At night they have to be careful because there are monsters they can attack them. The girl gets taken and is tortured by the villain (i can’t remember why). She also discovers there is someone in the adjoining cell. It turns out later in the book that the person she has been talking to in the cell is the villain tricking her. There is another male character, which it seemed could be a love interest. He had powers also and worked for the villain, but he never wanted to hurt the girl.

I believe I read this within the past three years.
