What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?

The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.

The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.

You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!

After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.

In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations. PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)

Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!

Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:
✱ The books picked for you are not yet released.
✱ If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✱ If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.

You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✱ A book is not available at your library.
✱ A genre or author you don’t enjoy.

INFORMATION NEEDED TO SIGN UP
Please sign up in this thread with the answer to the following question:

✱✱ When it comes to ordering drinks at coffee shops: ✱✱

1. It takes me a grand total of 5 seconds to get my order in.
2. I like ‘em with all the bells and whistles!

✱✱ If you have a preferred shelf, please list it along with your pick! ✱✱

IMPORTANT DATES
Sign ups will remain open until June 23rd, 2020, 6 PM US EDT.
For your convenience a Time Zone Converter.

You’ll have until June 28th, 2020, 6 PM US EDT to make your recommendations.

Please do not start reading your book(s) until the first of the month. You then have the entire month to read your pick(s) and give some feedback.

If you’re new please read the PIFM Guidelines and FAQ. If you have any questions that are not addressed there, please feel free to ask!

Please note that late sign ups will be included at the host's discretion and no one will be included after re-picks are assigned!✱

Aiswrya | 2044 comments TIPS TO MAKE THE CHALLENGE ENJOYABLE FOR EVERYONE!

Pickees
✱ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
✱ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.

Pickers
✱ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.

✱ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee's tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.

Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.

A few hints to help with book selection:
Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✱ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) Contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf) This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.

If you want to volunteer to make repicks:
✱ We love that you want to help out, but please remember those who need picks have been waiting for a long time already. Please only volunteer if you are able to make the repicks within a few hours of the deadline. Thank you!

Aiswrya | 2044 comments 2020 July PIFM Challenge - Picking Rules

Did you know your drink choices say a lot about your personality? What does yours say about you?

1 Mocha - Coffee & Chocolate! What's not to love?
The Mocha Drinker is still a bit of a kid at heart, as is evidenced by their preference for a coffee drink that doesn’t really taste like coffee. The Mocha Drinker can be identified by their friendly, outgoing attitude and penchant for showing you pictures of their pets. They’re totally adorable and one of the greatest friends. If you ever invite a Mocha Drinker out to dinner, you can be sure you’ll always have a friend with whom to split dessert!
Recommend a book that has a child or an animal in the story or the cover.

2 Americano - Espresso + Hot water
The Americano Drinker is the type of person who imagines themselves to be edgy, but is really just a big teddy bear, because let’s face it, the Americano is just watered-down regular coffee. The Americano Drinker’s favorite hobbies include writing their ambitious screenplays in a Moleskin journal, attending concerts for bands that were popular two years ago, and foreign films that they will over-explain to you!
Recommend a book with a creative cover or a book with a character that speaks a foreign language or one with a character that works in the entertainment industry

3 Shaken Iced Tea
Introducing the Shaken Iced Tea Drinker, the girl who looks better in those Fabletics fashions than Kate Hudson herself. She walks or bikes everywhere, not only for her own health, but for the health of the environment, and has some tattoo on her body that she got when she was backpacking through Asia. She can master the most advanced of yoga poses without breaking a sweat. You’d hate her if she weren’t so nice, but it’s her kind heart and good soul that make her a must in your friend file.
Recommend a book with a hottie on the cover or with a character involved in eco-friendliness or a character that spends a lot of time outdoors.

4 Cappuccino
Are you lusting over the Chanel runway or saving your cash for an investment pair of Prada pumps? Sophisticated and sexy, the Cappuccino Drinker oozes international appeal. With a keen eye for detail and a perfectionist streak, Cappuccino Drinkers live life on their terms and in style. They imagine themselves to be a bit more European than most, and love the finer things in life, so if you’re thinking of dating a Cappuccino Drinker, be prepared to shell out some cash!
Recommend a book with a rich character or one with a clothing accessory on the cover or a book set in Europe

5 Flat White - Espresso + Steamed Milk + Foam
Ah, the Flat White, a drink that is huge in Australia and which many coffee connoisseurs take very seriously! While most people with taste buds know that a Flat White is pretty terrible, the Flat White Drinker insists upon its merits. That stubbornness is a major trait of this coffee addict, who will debate you on any subject, especially the nerd specialties: books, music, movies, history, and TV. The Flat White Drinker has a few skeletons in the closet, though: while they talk about all their favorite independent coffee shops, they hold a secret Starbucks addiction that could destroy their whole street cred.
Recommend a book with a white cover or one with a nerdy character

6 Espresso
If the Espresso Drinker isn’t your Italian grandpa, they’re the person you’ve always been a bit too intimidated to talk to. Espresso Drinkers are leaders of the pack, and they never take no for an answer. They feel the need to show off a bit more (the proof is in the tiny cups), which is why you might see them eating or smoking outside, a brooding-yet-sexy look on their face. If you’re looking for flattery, you won’t get it from the Espresso Drinker: they’re straightforward to the point of bluntness, and have hurt more than a few people in their life with their refusal to sugarcoat.
Recommend a book with an alpha male/ female or a book that starts with a letter from "ESPRESSO".

7 Latte
Latte Drinkers are all about the Look, and are your ideal choice for interior design or fashion, because they understand beauty and the effort it requires. Sweet and honest, the Latte Drinker is an urban dweller with a suburban core, meaning that they love the conveniences they get in the big city, but keep to their close circle of friends and family and enjoy a little bit more chill time. Catch them living some of their fabulous life on their endless Instagram shots, and remember that if you need a bit of help picking out that first date or job interview outfit, the Latte Drinker has your back.
Recommend a book with an urban setting or a character who is active on social media.

8 Seasonal Drinks
Big kids at heart, Seasonal Drinkers still love traditions that make them feel warm and fuzzy inside, like trick-or-treating or watching a certain Christmas movie on Christmas Eve. Their excitement is infectious, and they are some of the best people to have around when you’re feeling low, because their optimistic outlook is just what you need. Seasonal Drinkers may be a bit overzealous in the affections, and tend to fall in love easily. Lovers and not fighters, Seasonal Drinkers have been there and done that, but that won’t stop them from taking chances again and again.
Recommend a book with "Insta love" (or MCs have instant attraction towards one another) or a book with anything seasonal in it (holidays/ sporting events/ once-a-year activities etc.)
