It is awesome, and a lot of work.
🥇🏆🌟👏💙🤓😃😁🙃
Thank you for doing it, I imagine it will be growing for awhile, and then have to be added to as the weeks continue.
It is going to be VERY helpful.

That is one of the tasks that had me totally kerfuffled.
All I could think of was a few movies.
But had yet to look into it, figured with 200 task I had a little time.
Thanks

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Good Morning Team!

I'm almost done with my Artemis Fowl book. Since I decided it was a good idea to read two books at the same time... But, I was worried that it would be too middle grade for my liking (I had a bad experience with scary school a few years ago)... curious enough, I am enjoying it.

Sure, it's middle grade, but the fairy society is quite interesting.

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 949 comments I was not too sure about that series also, but have found the first three, I think it is, fun. Quick easy reads. And agree about the Fairy society, and I also like the use of the lava tubes it is such and interesting idea.

Hehe. If it helps, the Tiffany aching books are a series-within-a-series and were meant to stand alone compared to the rest. They're technically YA, but not even remotely condescending or childish, and loads of fun to read!

In fact, most people are adamant you should not start reading Discworld with book 1 :D

Well, there you go. :)

To be fair, I'm the kind of person that has to read everything in order without skipping anything, and I won't usually start a series unless all the books are available (thanks for that George R.R. Martin...). But once I've read them before I can nip back and forth or just read my favourites, like I do with Discworld :)

message 366: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Well, in the Anita Blake case, I did think about it. Because Anita is a series that has the UF purists screaming for blood. It started as pure UF but then it turned into something...different....

So, my thought at the time was, if I happen to enjoy the Anita after the story changed into a "polyamory cult" type of paranormal fantasy, then I'm guaranteed an awesome series.

So far, I am enjoying it quite a bit.

I know! My daughter was like what, how can you take out this part and that part and expect to do the other book as it is integral parts and characters that were removed.

Why they can't leave things well enough alone.

Like I said I am only a few into the series, but the preview I saw of that show/movie I could not place the scenes from the first few books.
More likely a Percy Jackson situation than a Harry Potter one. However fingers crossed. Because in this day and age with CGI they really van stick very close to a fantasy book if they put in the effort.

Plethora (bookworm_r) | 2239 comments We have Disney+ but I have not personally watched anything on it.

I know when it first went live my husband watched the Manderlorian. I think my daughter was happy to indulge in Kim Possible and other shows. Since she has been in her college housing this whole time I have no idea what she has been watching. I know she was sad when Friends left Netflix as she watches it over and over, so we bought the series on Amazon Video.

Ok, so having heard that, I will ask all of you Diskworld people, where should I start the books?
Because I did try with The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1) by Terry Pratchett but it not really enjoy it. Did not hate it, but felt very little desire to read the next book.

Discworld is made of of several sub-series, and I would suggest starting at the beginning of one of those.

DEATH Series
Ankh-Morpork City Watch series
Witches Series
Rincewind series
Tiffany Aching series
Industrial Revolution series

My personal favourite Discworld book is Going Postal, which is the 4th in the Industrial Revolution series, but the first following the character of Moist Von Lipwig.

I also have a huge soft spot for the city watch books (which start with Guards! Guards!), and the characters in them.

For the most part though, you can read Discworld in any order you please, as the stories are all stand-alone (with the exception of books 1 & 2). Even if characters have shown up before, they're often given at least a cursory introduction, and any information required from previous books will also be given, so you should never feel lost as to what's going on.

And if you happened to start reading Pratchett near Christmas time, Hogfather is an absolute must! :D

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments Ah the lovely or is hating moments when books are twisted into movies and kill all the good parts. That's definitely annoying.

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 949 comments Ok Sammy, so that said, if you were to compare each go another book or series what would they be.
Just out of curiosity and if you don't know that is fine, someone else might.

DEATH Series
Ankh-Morpork City Watch series (Guards, Guards!)
Witches Series
Rincewind series
Tiffany Aching series
Industrial Revolution series (Going Postal)

Oh wow, that's a very difficult question! In my experience Pratchett was pretty unique. He's been compared to the likes of Douglas Adams, and I've heard people comment that Jasper Fforde is much like him, but I think that's mostly because they all write humourous books that would fall under the speculative fiction umbrella. (I suppose they all also use that disguise to provide a great deal of social and political commentary...)

But in my opinion, Adams and Fforde may be quite similar to each other, but lack a lot of the depth of Pratchett, and certainly aren't in the same league.

But that may just be me, ;)

Honestly? I am coming up blank trying to find a real comparison. I asked hubby for help, and he said that's like trying to decide which car manual the Bible is most like, lol!

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 949 comments Sammy wrote: "Alison (Lady Coffin) wrote: "Ok Sammy, so that said, if you were to compare each go another book or series what would they be.

No biggy Sammy.
I liked, the Hitchhiker's Guide series, but thought it quirky, however did not care for the audio of the first Dirk Gently, so have not gone further.
Do not think I have read anything by Fforde.

But what I was asking more was, if you were to take each part of the overall series of Diskworld like you had it broken down would each have its own character, and could any be compared to somethi g else?
Is one more high fantasy, and another more urban fantasy, while a third leans more towards say steampunk. Anything like that.
Or if you have a series one part would be comparable to that also would work.
Just something to give me a feel for the different group series of the whole. Maybe that way I can read one I like better so will get myself hooked.
😁😉

I don't think I would ever forgive the butchering of it.

I hear that!
*shudders*

message 384: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12864 comments Well, they're all comparable to epic/high fantasy in a way, though with the aforementioned humour and commentary.

The majority of the books are based in the city of Ankh Morpork, which is a kind of feudal city-state, where there are typical class distinctions between nobles/ordinary citizens, and a whole host of different creatures and races found in fantasy of all kinds (everything from Dwarves to Golems, Vampires and Zombies! Not scary ones though, lol.)

The city Watch books follow what passes for the city's police department. I guess funny fantasy crime novels would be the closest I could think of :)

The Rincewind novels (only a couple are actually about Rincewind) follow the city's wizards and their tendencies to get into trouble. Think the Hogwarts faculty (men only), aged a few years and all pretty grouchy and accident-prone.

The Witches and Tiffany Aching books take place on the same world on roughly the same timeline, but are more nature/countryside centered. Tiffany Aching is a YA series though even I (who isn't at all fond of YA) still love them.

The industrial revolution books, unsurprisingly, focus more on the introduction of -to them - modern technologies into that world, and propelling into a more psuedo-victorian (?) society that relies on things like telegraph poles and steam trains. More historical fantasy fiction with a tiny hint of steampunk, I guess?

And the DEATH series follows the escapades of DEATH (skeletal dude with a scythe that shows up when people shuffle themselves off their mortal coil...) and his hangers-on/family/rodent counterparts. And his horse, Binkie. I have no way to describe this series besides awesome, lol.

I hope that helps!

Believe it or not, that's how I felt when they first said they were filming the Lord of the Rings movies. before that there hadn't been a single fantasy movie that was watchable, never mind actually good, and I was terrified they'd mess it up!

Luckily they didn't listen to me and went ahead anyway, lol.

I actually waited until the very last day it was showing to go see Fellowship, and then sat there with my jaw on the floor for the entire three+ hours I was in there!

Oh yeah me too. I didn't get too far in the series but from what I've read I wouldn't want them butcher it either.

That was like when they wanted to do a show of Harry Dresden. It was not good and thankful they stopped. I wasn't too happy with the way they butchered Harry

From what I've read, and back then I had no idea Harry Dresden was a thing, they wanted to have the series not following the books, on purpose.

So it was basically Fan Fic. (Unless they had Jim Butcher writing the argument)

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 949 comments Isn't that sort of what they did with the Sookie books with True Blood? Not that I have watched the show, but it is the impression I have gotten having read the books and some plot points from the HBO show. Sort of FanFic, but with input from Charlaine Harris.

Well, the first series wasn't that bad... It was the series that actually made me read the books... And then, season 2 happened.

Sure, they added Jessica, and I ended up liking her, and Lafayette on the series was so awesome they decided to keep him... but season 2... really, season 2 was... bad.

And then it got worse. I stopped following after that and only caught some episode now and then.

Plus, I didn't get to watch Eric on a pink spandex outfit, and I was looking forward it.

My sister braved through it. And the parts she shared with me.... No. I might think the book series lost some of its charm and could have ended sooner, or at least conducted better to the final outcome, but at least it kept some standards.
