Currently reading Into the Darkest Corner
by Elizabeth Haynes. I absolutely love it, the tension is palpable and the characters are very intense. Does anyone know of anything similar? Thanks in advance.

I'm currently reading Carolyn J. Rose's The Devil's Tombstone, the third book in the Hemlock Lake mystery series. If you don't know this author, check her out. She has some very humorous mystery stories too.
I just finished I Stooged to Conquer: The Autobiography of the Leader of the Three Stooges by Moe Howard. (Yes, THAT Moe!) It's a 3-star firsthand account of the act throughout the 20th century. It's not a work of literature, but of interest to anyone (like myself) who is a fan of the trio and wants to know a little of what went on behind-the-scenes of their wild and wacky short films.

and can't put it down. Why do I have to work for a living dammit."I know the feeling. My reading has slowed down perceptibly since I started back to work after the holidays.. :(
I finished Hounded by David Rosenfelt. 3 1/2 starsIn this 12th book in the series New Jersey defense attorney Andy Carpenter agrees to defend his friend Pete Stanton, a cop accused of murdering Danny Diaz. Diaz allegedly snitched about Pete selling drugs and was shot in his home - leaving behind his son Ricky and dog Sebastian.
Andy looks into the case with his investigator girlfriend Melanie and a cadre of assistants. They soon find that a conspiracy involving the deaths of several people from "natural causes" seem to be tied to the Diaz killing. Meanwhile, Ricky and Sebastian move in with Andy and Melanie (and their dog Tara) while the cops look for the boy's absent stepmother.
The book reminded me of 'Perry Mason' novels, being partly investigation and partly courtroom scenes, all well-written and compelling. In addition, Andy is a wise-cracking funny guy, and the humor in the book was an added bonus.
An enjoyable mystery.
I finished The Bone Orchard by Paul Doiron. Sgt. Kathy Frost and her partner, Maine game wardens, are forced to shoot a disfigured Gulf War veteran, Jimmy Gammon, in self-defense. However, Jimmy's family and friends, as well as other veterans are infuriated and a few days later Kathy is shot and wounded. Mike Bowditch - an ex-game warden who was visiting Kathy - was on the spot and was also injured. Mike - who quit being a warden because of friction with a commanding officer - feels compelled to look into the case. Mike - who is now a hunting/fishing guide - has a lot of time on his hands which he uses to hang out, visit people, and talk a lot. To me it seemed like many scenes were extraneous to the story and slowed down the action.
There are plenty of suspects for Mike to consider and he keeps on and solves the case - but the solution seems out of left field and isn't quite satisfying.
This was the first book I've read in the series and I think perhaps previous ones were better. This one was just too meandering.

This is a series that I enjoy reading. The only one I haven't cared as much for was Massacre Pond, thought it was a bit boring.

just finished fear nothing by lisa gardner it was good maybe a little farfetched, now onto the long walk by stephen king
I just finished
by Lee Child. It wasn't as good as the first two Jack Reacher novels. I pretty much guessed that Hobie had stolen his identity very early on. Child did make up for it by making me doubt it throughout the book. The ending was good. I was on the edge of my seat. It kind of showed that Reacher isn't a superhuman and he too can get it wrong sometime. But the pace was very slow. I found some of the descriptions very long and sometimes confusing. Overall the book is good but could be better.Next book on my to-read list is
by Robert Ludlum.
Flash Beagle wrote: "I just finished Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest. It's fantastic; became by favorite crime book."Good choice FB. I'm sort of reading
, while finishing
, which is an entertaining read, if not particularly challenging.
I just finished The Cabinet of Curiosities which I gave 3 stars. Pendergast seemed odder than usual in this book. His dream like states could have been eliminated. I feel this book could have been trimmed down some to make it more enjoyable. I also finished The Gods of Guilt which I gave 5 stars. I really enjoyed this book and the storyline. Mickey wrestled with his own demons but seemed to come out on top.
I'm just starting The Blackhouse. It has been highly recommended and my book club is reading it this month. I'm off to a good start and like it
Just finished Thirteen Hours by Deon Meyer. It is an excellent read. Two interlinked plot lines with an interesting cast of characters. Once started, I could not put it down since the plot just hurtles along.
I have read The Trafficked - Lee Weeks. Which I found really good and took me a while to read but enjoyable writing lol. I have since started and gave up on Slaughterhouse-Five - Kurt Vonnegut. Which I never thought of as a book. I've also listened to The Paper Magician - Charlie N. Holmberg. I am now reading Fall of Night - Rachel Caine and 13:24: A Story of Faith and Obsession - M. Dolon Hickmon.
Green Witch, Dead WitchGenre: Murder / Mystery / Crime / Supernatural
Rating: 3 star
Review: Green Witch, Dead Witch
A murder mystery with Witches and Magick
Had a pretty good month so far, read The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, then NYPD Red and Sail by James Patterson and various co-authors. Also finished Remember When by Nora Roberts (loved the In Death half of the book). Got a bit stuck on 12th of Never - this Women's Murder Club book has got so many storylines that it's made me quite angry so instead I've made a start on Morse's Greatest Mystery and Other Stories by Colin Dexter.

I wasn't a big fan of 12th of Never, either. At least not as well as I liked the others.

Just finished
City of Dragons
. It reminds me of the Italian cars of my youth -- beautiful to look at, but mechanically challenged to the point where you grit your teeth every time you turn the key. It's a prime example of mood and atmosphere done well, sabotaged by a central character that does all she can to repel you (and everyone else). Three wobbly stars.Read the full review here.
Now reading California Fire and Life .

That's a good one. I read that a few years back.

This week I finished Death And The Pleasant Voices, by Mary Fitt, which is an old English crime novel; I also finished The Green Man, by Kingsley Amis, which is a sort of comic look at one man discovering his mortality.

Funny in parts; the actual "what is going on here" will keep you reading. I've just finished it this week, so I need to give it some thought. But I enjoyed it.

Currently reading1. Funny Fruit
2. Death and Disappearances
3. The Conversation: Your Guide to Transcendence
I have tons of books I started and which I have to get back to, which I will hopefully touch as soon as these are flushed out!!
finished the long walk by stephen king and started the shining girls by lauren beukes but may change my mind and start something new
I finished and loved Fall of Night - Rachel Caine. Her books are marvellous, shame Daylighters is her final book of this series. But that is what I will read next on Kindle 1. I gave up on 13:24: A Story of Faith and Obsession - M. Dolon Hickmon due to the Child Abuse I was reading in the story. I couldn't cope with the storyline as it was, so I said so (that was from Netgalley). So I will put Follow The Leader - Mel Sherratt on Kindle 2 to read afterwards.
I'm currently enjoying
, an excellent Cold War spy novel by Len Deighton and the first Shetland mystery,
by Ann Cleeves.
I'm currently reading The Lost Empress
by Steve Robinson. It's book 4 in the Jefferson Tayte Genealogical series. This is a great series.I'm also listening to
by Dashiell Hammett.
Am i wrong or do we have a "Just bought or are thinking of buying thread"? Sometimes i am thinking of buying or have bought books on impulse. It would be nice to have a thread where members can comment on the purchases/acquisitions of others.

Ah, the morning coffee.. :).. I'm on mine too, just emptied my thermos. I may have to have one more..
I just finished
by Anne Cleeland. It is the second in a series but was entertaining as a stand-alone nonetheless. The characters, Doyle and her boss/husband Chief Inspector Acton are very interesting. I can recommend this to mystery nuts like myself. Check it out.

I just recently finished Never Fall Down by Patricia McCormick. It's a first person account of the Khmer Rouge killing fields. It's unbelievable and monumental; spare, first person, harrowing. (It's categorized as fiction, but really more an "as told to" such as The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley.) It was a National Book Award finalist.
Just finished All Good Deedsfor another group BOM read. Very well written but not my kind of book, unfortunately, too dark and the entire main cast of characters were abused/damaged in some manner. Will start A String of Beads tomorrow, one of my favorite authors and a new book in the Jane Whitefield series which I've always enjoyed.
