This will be a team reading challenge which will run from June 1st 2020 to June 30th 2020. Results will be announced on July 1st/2nd 2020.

To complete this challenge, participants will be split into teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy-read your book. You can also earn some bonus points by reading books which have lots of 'Blank Spaces' (spaces between words) in their title or author's name☺

You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant ☺

How it works:

To earn points in this challenge, simply read and review as normal, but if you would like to earn your team some bonus points, then simply tell us how many 'Blank Spaces' you would like to claim from your chosen book.

So -
* A Blank Space is exactly that - the spaces between words in your books title, or author's name. So in this title - The Selection the gap between 'The' and 'Selection'

* To count as a Blank Space, the space must be completely empty, if there is punctuation in it like - or ' then it won't count as a Blank Space, but spaces either side of it will.

* You may use different editions with different titles, but they must be made up of English letters (accents are okay).

* You will also be able to claim the spaces between the end of the title and the author's name, so every book should qualify for at least 2 spaces (ie: Ruin by Sarah = Ruin - 1 - by - 2 - Sarah = 2 spaces).

* You may claim up to 5 Blank Spaces per qualifying book (see *** below).

* If your book is YA/Adult, without illustrations, and has a page count of over 450 pages, you may also claim up to an additional 5 Blank Spaces (up to 10 Blank Spaces total).

* ** You may read any kind of book for this challenge, but the page counts necessary to claim Blank Spaces are the following -
- YA, NA, Adult, Non-fiction books (without illustrations) - 200 pages.
- Middle-grade/children's books (without illustrations) - 300 pages.
- Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, books written in verse, anything with some illustrations - 600 pages.
- Books which are mainly illustrations cannot be used.

* You may add together page counts to reach these minimums, but you can only add together page counts of books which are under the limits, ie: less than 200, 300, and 600 pages respectively. You cannot add together page counts of books which meet the minimum page count on their own.

* If you do choose to add together the page counts of multiple books to reach the minimum page count, you may only choose one book to claim Blank Spaces from, not all of them. So if you read one book with 119 pages, and a second with 113 pages, you can then claim Blank Spaces from one of those books to add to the team's total.

* Each time you post a book which can be used to earn Blank Spaces, you will receive bonus points. You will get the same number of bonus points for your book, as you receive in page points (the same as for our current challenge).

* Blank Spaces will be added together for the whole team, and every time the team accumulates 100 Blank Spaces, they will receive 50 bonus points.

* When the team reaches 416 Blank Spaces, their number of bonus points will rise from the 200 they have already earned, to 416 bonus points (an addition of 216 bonus points).
(416 is the number of Blank Spaces in the lyrics for 'Blank Space' by Taylor Swift.)

* You may use a different edition to claim Blank Spaces, to the edition you use for pages.

* Books started before June can be used for page points +/- buddy read points, but you will not be able to claim any Blank Spaces or bonus points.

Edit: * If your chosen book has multiple authors, you can count each of them, and you can count the Blank Spaces between them (but there wouldn't be an 'and' between each).
So, 'These Broken Stars' would be -

These 1 Broken 2 Stars 3 by 4 Amie 5 Kaufman, 6 Meagan 7 Spooner

The names must be of authors though, not translators, editors, narrators etc. and title and authors must come from the same edition.

Example: Jenny reads the following book -

A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas by Sarah J. Maas

So the title and author's name would be -
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

And Jenny could claim the following Blank Spaces -

A 1 Court 2 of 3 Thorns 4 and 5 Roses 6 by 7 Sarah 8 J. 9 Maas

So based on this edition - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... at 555 pages,
Jenny would earn 11 page points, 11 bonus points, and 9 Blank Spaces to add to her team's total ☺

Further examples - (view spoiler)

Rules/Guidelines:

* Books must be read between the 1st of June and the 30th of June inclusive. Books started before June may be used, but you will only earn points for pages read in June, and will not be able to claim any bonus points or Blank Spaces. Please let us know how many pages you have read in June when posting your review.

* Books must be at least 50 pages long, without illustrations/photographs/diagrams etc.
-- 75 pages minimum for middle-grade and children's books.
-- 150 pages minimum for poetry, books written in verse, manga/graphic novels, books which have some illustrations, and plays.
-- Books which are mainly illustrations, such as some children's books, picture books, and some non-fiction books etc. cannot be used as part of this challenge.
**Please note that these are the minimum page counts for page points, not for the number of books read, or for earning any bonus points.**

* Middle-grade, and children's books without illustrations/photographs will earn 1 point for every 75 pages due to the reduced word count. This applies to all books which are tagged 'middle-grade' or 'children's' more times than they are tagged YA. This includes Goosebumps books, The Wind in the Willows, the Magisterium series, and The Secret Garden to name a few.
**Please note that these are the minimum page counts for page points, not for the number of books read, or for earning any bonus points.**

* Books which are illustrated or have photographs will receive 1 point for every 150 pages. If your book has an illustrator listed or is tagged 'illustrated', then it will fall into this category. This includes books such as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Spiderwick Chronicles, A Series of Unfortunate Events, books by Roald Dahl, Doll Bones, Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children Series, A Monster Calls, The Little Prince, and Charlotte's Web to name a few.

* A list of editions of some of these books, which we consider not to be illustrated can be found on our challenge rules thread here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... These are the only editions of these listed books which can be used to earn points as a book rather than an illustrated book.

* A list of books which have a modified page count to account for illustrations, which can then be used as a regular book can also be found here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

* Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse will receive 1 point for every 150 pages due to reduced word count. If your book is tagged 'Sequential Art', 'Graphic Novels', 'Comics', 'Manga', 'Poetry', 'Verse', 'Play', or words to that effect, then it will fall into this category.

* If your poetry book or graphic novel does not meet the minimum page count, we will allow you to add together the page counts of 2 or more books to make it to the minimum page count. Books must be posted at the same time, and must be less than 150 pages each.
(This applies to meeting the page count requirement, not meeting any other requirements.)

* If you are reading novellas which are less than 50 pages long, you may also add together the page counts of one or more novellas of less than 50 pages, to get to the minimum page count of 50 pages. Books must be posted at the same time.
(This applies to meeting the page count requirement, not meeting any other requirements.)

* You are welcome to read physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks for this challenge, and you are also welcome to read in any language as long as you provide us with an English translation of your review/updates either as part of your review, on your team's review thread, or by personal message to myself.

* If for any reason you are unable to publish your review on Goodreads, it can also be sent to myself via personal message. Please continue to post on your team's review thread as normal, stating 'review sent to Sarah by personal message' after 'Review:'.

* Re-reads are allowed in this challenge, as long as it has been at least 8 months since you last read the book. You will need to write a new review or updates though please. We recommend that you post on your review '2020 re-read', or something to that effect so that we can easily see what your new review is.

* If you have started reading a book previously but not finished it, you can read it and have it count as long as you are starting again from the beginning in June. Please let us know that this is what you have done when posting your review.

*A review or 4 detailed updates will be required for each book read.

*Buddy reads must have a minimum of 4 comments to count, and comments must be detailed, and about the book. We also expect you to discuss the book with your buddies, not just post updates and leave. Comments must also be different from your review or status updates. If your buddy read comments, and your review or status updates are identical, then you will not receive points for both until they contain different details.

* Buddy reads must take place within this group (YA Buddy Readers' Corner ♥) to gain the extra points. You can see which buddy reads are already planned each month here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

* You should not start a buddy read more than 7 days before the start date, or more than 14 days after the start date, or the last comment on the thread, whichever is later. If you do need to change the date, check with your buddy as they may also be able to start early/late with you.

* Group Buddy Reads can be joined to earn buddy read points, but only GBRs for June 2020 will count. These will be posted on this thread around May 22nd - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

* Please note that we are no longer using 'Series' threads in our challenges. If you choose to take part in a buddy read on a series thread rather than a thread for an individual book, then you will not earn any buddy read points for it.

* Please post the link to your buddy read along with the book you are reading and the start date on the 'Planned Buddy Reads' list for the correct month - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... If you continually schedule buddy reads and fail to post them on the planned buddy reads thread for the correct month, then we won't continue to give buddy read points. It is important that buddy reads are posted on the planned buddy reads list so that everyone is given the opportunity to join.

* There are no set books which need to be read, any book which fits within the rules will count, so books can be chosen by the reader. Please check with us before reading if you are unsure whether your book counts or not.

* Bonus points will be given as detailed in the 'points' section below.

* Please only post one review per comment on your team's review thread, unless you are adding the books together to reach a minimum page count.

* This challenge will begin and end on Goodreads time, which is Pacific Standard Time - https://greenwichmeantime.com/time-zo... The challenge will start at 00:01 on June 1st 2020 PST, and end at 00:01 on July 1st 2020 PST.

* You are welcome to start the challenge on the 1st of the month in your own time zone, but you must also finish the challenge on your own time zone. Please let us know if you are doing this, as Goodreads may time stamp your books as being started on the last day of the previous month.

* Whilst you may start on your own timezone, the challenge will still end on Goodreads time, so even if you start late, you cannot end late.

* Higher page count editions may be used when claiming points for pages, but page counts for iphone/ibook/ipod/itunes editions will not be accepted, and neither will page counts for audiobook editions of any kind, or miniature versions of books such as Flipback, dwarsligger, PenguinMini (you are still welcome to read in these formats, but must use a different page count). We will also not accept a page count which is more than double the next highest for that book. (ie: if there are 4 editions at 200 pages, and 1 edition at 2200 pages, we would not accept the 2200 page edition as it is more than double the next highest at 200 pages.)

* We request that you leave us a link to the edition with the page count that you are using if the book has multiple editions with different page counts.

* Please do not go back and alter posts once they have been counted, if you need to make a change, please make a new post on your team's review thread, with a link to your original post, and then explain the change, for example; a higher page count edition has been found, or a buddy read needs to be added, and please include links.

* We do reserve the right to not add additional points on when posts have been amended, as it may be unclear how many points were awarded the first time.

* We will be tracking the number of books that people are reading, to see whether they are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that they are on. If over a period of several months you are consistently reading less than the required number of books, we will ask you to move to a lower level of team, or go solo. This is because it is unfair to other team members if you continue to sign up for a medium/serious team, yet are only reading 2 books a month. Not applicable this month.

* Our regular challenge rules can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

*** If you are not sure if your book counts, please ask before you read it. Questions can be posted on this thread, or sent by personal message to myself.***

Points :

YA/Adult Books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 50 pages*

*50 - 99 pages = 1 points
*100 - 149 pages = 2 point
*150 - 199 pages = 3 points
*200 - 249 pages = 4 points
*250 - 299 pages = 5 points
*300 - 349 pages = 6 points
*350 - 399 pages = 7 points
*400 - 449 pages = 8 points
*450 - 499 pages = 9 points
*500 - 549 pages = 10 points
*550 - 599 pages = 11 points
*600+ pages = 12 points
(Maximum of 12 points per book)
(Please note that this is the minimum page count for page points, not the minimum page count for claiming bonus points.)

Middle-grade/children's books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 75 pages*

*75 - 149 pages = 1 points
*150 - 224 pages = 2 point
*225 - 299 pages = 3 points
*300 - 374 pages = 4 points
*375 - 449 pages = 5 points
*450 - 524 pages = 6 points
*525 - 599 pages = 7 points
*600+ pages = 8 points
(maximum of 8 points per book)
(Please note that this is the minimum page count for page points, not the minimum page count for claiming bonus points.)

Graphic novels/manga/poetry/plays/books written in verse/books which have some illustrations - *1 point per 150 pages*

*150 - 299 pages = 1 points
*300 - 449 pages = 2 point
*450 - 599 pages = 3 points
*600+ pages = 4 points
(maximum of 4 points per book)
(Please note that this is the minimum page count for page points, not the minimum page count for claiming bonus points.)

* Buddy reads DOUBLE your points score for pages, so a 300-page book (6pts) + buddy read (6pts) = 12 points. 600-page book (12pts) + buddy read (12pts) = 24 points.
(Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in our group.)

★ ★ ★ Please note that while you may add together page counts to get to the minimum necessary for the 'books read' column, books which meet the minimum page counts will still be scored individually. This means that if you submit 3 novellas of 70 pages to reach the 200-page minimum, you will receive 1 point for each of these novellas, as each book is individually long enough to earn bonus points. This applies to all types of points.★ ★ ★

Bonus Points -

* Bonus points will be awarded based on page count, the same as page points and buddy read points. So if you read a 300-page book and are awarded 6 points, you will earn an extra 6 points for claiming a Blank Spaces. Similarly, if you read a 300-page middle-grade book, you will receive 4 page points, and a further 4 bonus points for claiming Blank Spaces. The same maximums apply as apply for page points.

* Each time your team accumulates 100 Blank Spaces, your team will receive 50 bonus points.

* Each time your team accumulates 416 Blank Spaces, your bonus points will be increased by 216 to 416 bonus points.

- Bonus points for Blank Spaces are awarded to team totals only, so solo players will not be able to claim these points.

*Mods will keep track of each teams points, using the following system -

Team Name:

__________|_Books_|_Buddy_|__Page____|_Bonus_|__Total
__________|_Read__|_Reads_|__Points__|_Points|

Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0

Blank Space Bonus_____________________+000

Team______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0

Blank Spaces = 0/416
Blank Spaces = 0/416
Blank Spaces = 0/416

Please note - we will be tracking how many books you have read, but you will not receive points for this column. This is to allow us to see whether you are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that you have requested to be on. You will receive a '1' for every YA/NA/Adult/non-fiction book (without illustrations) over 100 pages long, for every middle-grade or children's book (without illustrations) over 150 pages long, or for every 300 pages of graphic novels, poetry, plays, novels written in verse, and book with some illustrations etc, that you have read. If you consistently ask to be on a Serious or Medium team without reading the minimum number of books, you may be asked to drop down to a lower level team. Not applicable this month.

This challenge will be a team challenge. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, we will once again be having a smaller number of teams, with a mixture of readers in each. When signing up please let us know whether you would like to be on a team, or whether you would like to go solo ☺

Teams should be posted by May 27th/28th at the latest.

Thank you! ☺

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Question - Can titles be any language as long as they use English letters?

Answer - Yes, that should be in the second post...

* You may use different editions with different titles, but they must be made up of English letters (accents are okay).

Question - How would books with multiple authors work? Do we get to count each? And if so, do we count the gaps between names as well?

Answer - Yes, if your chosen book has multiple authors, you can count each of them, and you can count the Blank Spaces between them (but there wouldn't be an 'and' between each).
So, 'These Broken Stars' would be -

These 1 Broken 2 Stars 3 by 4 Amie 5 Kaufman, 6 Meagan 7 Spooner

The names must be of authors though, not translators, editors, narrators etc. and title and authors must come from the same edition. I will add this info to the second post ☺

Question: Since I read a lot of Manga in between my other novels I have come across manga that say 1 page on the page count on Goodreads, but the Kindle versions are to par with the page count. Minus a handful for the cover and index, how should I approach this if I come across it?

Answer: Hi, if you think the page count on Goodreads is wrong or missing and there's a page count available on Amazon or Book Depository then link us to that page count, and I'll add it to Goodreads when I do scores ☺

Question: I'm slightly confused. In one place it says you can only claim up to 5 blank spaces but in another place it gives an example of claiming 9 blank spaces..

Answer: * If your book is YA/Adult, without illustrations, and has a page count of over 450 pages, you may also claim up to an additional 5 Blank Spaces (up to 10 Blank Spaces total).

Extra Explanation of a rule: I just need to explain this part of the rules I think -

* You may claim up to 5 Blank Spaces per qualifying book (see *** below).

* If your book is YA/Adult, without illustrations, and has a page count of over 450 pages, you may also claim up to an additional 5 Blank Spaces (up to 10 Blank Spaces total).

This means that if your book is YA/Adult, without illustrations, and has a page count of over 450 pages AND has more than 5 blank spaces in the title, you can claim them. It doesn't mean you automatically get 5 extra blank spaces.

I obviously didn't explain well enough, but if your book has 8 blank spaces in the title/author name, and is under 450 pages, you can claim 5 of those blank spaces, if it's is YA/Adult, without illustrations, and has a page count of over 450 pages, then you can claim all 8 ☺

Question: what about & as that one is another one that has confused me.

Fried 1 chicken 2 & 3 fangs 4 by 5 mummy

Would that be it or is it

Fried 1 chicken & fangs 2 by 3 mummy

Also i'm confufused with punctuation.

C.M. 1 Stunich

or

C 1 . 2 M 3 . 4 Stunich

Answer: You'd be able to claim the spaces either side of the & the same as if it was a word ☺️

For the author name, it depends if there is a gap or not on Goodreads, ie, is it C.M. Without a space, or C. M. with a space? I've been doing control+f on my laptop and then pressing the space bar once for it to highlight the spaces ☺️

Question: I didn't see it addressed in the answered questions or in the rule about punctuation spaces in a title but will spaces in a title count after a (:) For instances a title like this

Rise of the Alpha: Wolves of Willow Bend Books 1-3

This is actually 3 separate books all together. I haven't actually researched whether or not to claim them separate or together at this time but I'm just curious if the title spaces after the (:) would count not just the space after the (:)... if this question even makes sense lol.

Answer: Hi, yes spaces after a colon : count, I've been sidelining that rule for the past few months to try and make things easier ☺️

Question: Quick Question: for those participating in the solo challenge, do we still count our blank spaces for bonus points? I think I got myself confused.

Answer: You don't need to count spaces if you are solo, I only started a tally on the solo review thread because there are some people who I've popped on there until I can move them into a team, and if they post reviews it's easier for me to keep track of the blank spaces claimed there so that I can move them over to their team review thread when they move ☺

Question: It doesn't have a space. It goes C.M. space Stunich.

Answer: If there isn't a space between the letters, then there wouldn't be a blank space to claim, you can only claim the spaces that you can see on Goodreads. So you for this one you could claim
- by J. Anderson Coats
- by 1 J. 2 Anderson 3 Coats
because there are space between them,
But for this one -
by J.K. Rowling
by 1 J.K. 2 Rowling
because there are no gaps between the J. and the K. you wouldn't be able to claim a space there. ☺

Question: Hi Sarah, I would like to know if it's possible for me to earn pages points because I read the Little Prince. Thanks ;)

Answer: Hi, I think we usually give points based on this edition of The Little Prince - Le Petit Prince 小王子 The Little Prince (Traditional Chinese) 傳統中文電子書 -- eBook by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry which has 382 pages. (I'll note this down on the rules thread because there are a lot of editions to go through!)

Anyway, that would get you 2 page points, and then if you read something else to go with it, you could also earn bonus points and blank spaces. So you'd need another illustrated book/play/or poetry with 218 pages, or 109 pages of a middle-grade/children's book, or 73 pages of an unillustrated YA/Adult book and then you could earn blank spaces too ☺

Question: I only read the standard version which is 93 pages long and The Last Battle of C.S.Lewis (the last volume of Narnia) which is 288 pages long therefore do you think that I can match them ?
That the first time that I'm doing this challenge I'm quite a bit lost, sorry !

Answer: Sorry to confuse you, we tend to use the longest page count available (although there are some exceptions - I'll pop them below) as that's what will earn the most points. We wouldn't be able to give any points for a 93 page edition of the little prince because our lowest points value for illustrated books is 1 point per 150 pages.

You wouldn't need to add anything to The Last Battle though as that is an unillustrated YA book, and over 200 pages, so would count on it's own ☺

So, you could post the Last Battle on it's own for points and blank spaces, and then if you post the little prince using the higher page count edition then you'd get 2 page points for that. You could always add something later if you read something else that could be added to it ☺

->7. In challenges where points are given for pages read, higher page count editions may be used, but page counts for iphone/ibook/ipod/itunes editions will not be accepted, and neither will page counts for audiobook editions of any kind, or miniature versions of books such as Flipback, dwarsligger, PenguinMini (you are still welcome to read in these formats, but must use a different page count). We also request that you leave us a link to the edition with the page count that you are using, if the book has multiple editions with different page counts.

We will also not accept a page count which is more than double the next highest for that book. (ie: if there are 4 editions at 200 pages, and 1 edition at 2200 pages, we would not accept the 2200 page edition as it is more than double the next highest at 200 pages.)

Question: How many Blank Spaces?

Answer: So somebody asked me about this, and I wanted to try and explain this a little easier, so... this is what I meant by doing ctrl+f and then hitting the space bar on a computer to look for spaces -

So you can see, each time there is a purple line, that's a blank space, so there are 3 blank spaces (one after each word in the title), and then another 2 either side of the author's first name.

If it's a book that's part of a series, then you ignore the series name -

so there are 2 blank spaces (one after each word in the title), and then another 2 either side of the author's first name.

Hope that helps ☺
