May 2020 Group Read #1: THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, John A. Keel
i put this on reserve from my library so hopefully they open up on may 1st and i'll get it before the end of may! my sister and i saw the movie in the theater back in the day. it scared us to death! very excited to read this!
Great! Looking forward to reading this together.
I recently mixed the movie of this up with the X-Files episode "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" - since they have a common element, which I won't spoil, except to say it involves Alex Trebek ;)
I've been meaning to get to this one forever so yay! :) I already own it in both paper and ebook. I should probably finish reading Keel's JADOO first. Between library holds coming in at awkward times and other interruptions, that one kept getting pushed off the side, which is a real shame since I have an entire John Keel reading list I want to work my way through.

I'll join in with a reread. For those who are interested I'm attaching a link to an interview that the author did with Art Bell in 2002.https://youtu.be/SjNwNn1HB6w
Oh thanks J! Maybe we can set up a time & date and watch that episode of the X-Files later, near the end of the month? What says the group?
I haven't read either of these books so I am looking forward to them, ordering the books as we speak 😂😊

I gave a speech on the Mothman in high school and frightened my classmates. 😂 I don't remember reading the book straight through so much as using it for reference though, so I'm looking forward to this!

Jose Chung is my all-time fave X-Files ep. I'll take any excuse to watch it.

If we want to do a group watch of The X-Files episode, I'd propose May 16th (a Saturday and lets folks have time to read the Keel book), and use the Kast app. I am happy to host, and I can post the invite here. If people are interested, let me know, and what times work best.
As we all have the complete X-Files series on DVD AND Blu-ray, we can just pop them in and watch at the same time. We all have them right? Or is it just me?
I was hoping for closer to the end of the month. I have no experience with that app. They use to be on Netflix? No idea if they still are.

I don't know anything about the app, but it sounds like a good idea if members want to participate. I agree with Latasha about moving it closer to the end of the month though, as that will give people more time to finish the book.
Bo, if you are offering to "walk us through this", I may even try it... ;)

It's a free app called Kast, and I think it's available on phones, too. Basically, I'll do the hosting and then everyone watches the show all synced up together. End of the month works for me, too! Whatever you guys prefer. Here's the link to the app: https://w.kast.gg/

I'm in for this one. I don't think I ever saw the movie, so the whole thing is new to me! Interesting pick for a group read.

I've never seen or read this before, so this will be the first for me, too.

I really enjoy the movie. There are some genuinely unsettling moments in it. I'll probably have to rewatch when I'm through just for fun.
There's a fairly recent documentary on Amazon Prime, too, called The Mothman of Point Pleasant. Holding off on watching that until I finish the book, also.

The docu was good. I wish it had been a bit longer, but then again, I knew a lot of the legend so there was only so much new they could tell me.

First time read for me! I would love to join in on the watch party, I’m one of those with all the dvds too lol. Looking forward to checking out the app, thank you for hosting a watch party!
We should do both the movie and the X-Files episode for viewings! Also, I'm about 1/4 of the way through the book at present. While I enjoy it, I am die-hard skeptic when it comes to things like UFOs and real-life hauntings. I love reading stories of them, but I don't know that Keel does a lot in the way of convincing. A ton of leaps of logic and tenuous connections, but it's no doubt entertaining.
The movie is one of my all time favorites. And I knew the book was the actual account, and did not follow the movies. But I wasn't prepared for the heavy UFO/alien focus of the book. The movie was really more of an inter dimensional being or supernatural entity. They never really touched on UFOs and MIBs. I'm still only at about 20%, but thrown by the shift in content from movie to book. I wonder why they made that choice.
I don't remember the movie all that well, but I do recall it being more supernatural, and certainly more modern. I should finish the book this week or early next week, and I'm curious how Keel solidifies his theory about UFOs being something more than outer space entities.

The major difference, that I noted, between the book and movie is that the movie focuses on creating a coherent timeline.
I really enjoyed the film and I just started reading the book. I'm about 50 pages in and it's pretty fast paced. I still haven't hit the Mothman adventure, but the past accounts of UFO/Mothman sights is really interesting.
my library hasn't posted any updates as to when they are going to re-open. i'm gonna have to break down and buy this book. I'm a big fan of all this kinda stuff so i knew about the MIB's and everything. i was just trying to wait on the library :(

I'm about 75% of the way through the book and am finding it a bit dry. I thought it would be more like the movie; boy, was I wrong!
Starting this tonight. My sister can never read this. It would terrify her. "They are not from outer space. There is no need for them to be. They have always been here. "
Latasha wrote: "Has anyone been to the mothman festival?"I wish! I have been to the fictional post-apocalyptic version of the Mothman Museum while playing Fallout 76, though.
I'm getting closer to finishing Jadoo so I should be starting the book soon.
