My friend visited Point Pleasant a couple months back and snapped a photo at the Mothman statue.

For those without Prime, it's also available to watch free on Youtube, on the Newkirks' channel, Planet Weird: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH2N...

I get that he's making a point here about how all these things are related/happen all over, but I'm ready for a more in-depth look at one story rather than brief mentions of thirty sightings. (I hope that's a thing this book delivers, or it's going to be a tedious read.)

thanks Christa!
so, who all really, truly believes in the mothman? no making fun of each other!! i'm really not sure. i think all those people saw something and i believe they are describing as they saw it. i have no idea what it was, i wasn't there. i just don't know. this goes for all the cryptids, ufo's and all that. i think there's too many sightings for it to be nothing. i'm open minded but i just don't know.

One snowy night around midnight, after a long 8 hour drive, my husband and I were driving down a road covered with trees arching over the road. We were pretty hypnotized due to the length of the ride, the monochromatic color scheme of white and black (snow and night) and no other movement on the road. Suddenly this huge, white, I swear it looked like an angel, came swooping out of the trees down in front of the windshield and back up into the tree branches. Basically what we saw was a large white flying object with massive wings. It took us a couple moments to realize it was a huge (maybe not as huge as I thought) barn owl. Mothman like lots of cryptids is open to the interpretation of the observer. But it sure is nice to wish for a little magic in this world!

I'm a big proponent of the ultra-terrestrial / trans-dimensional / Inter-dimensional hypotheses. It has the potential to explain a lot of phenomena. One day we might find out that what we call "paranormal" is actually explainable.
But I also don't believe that reality relies on tangibility. I'm sure many have heard the expression, "The plural of anecdote is *not* data", but let's be real - at a certain point I feel like we have to acknowledge that if THAT many people are seeing / experiencing / feeling something, something is up. It's not sufficient to just dismiss people as crazy or delusional on the basis of these experiences alone.
There's a pair of metal scissors on my desk. I know that, despite looking cold and lifeless, the atoms in the metal are vibrating, and bonded together by their attraction to each other. I know this to be true, but as I sit here at my desk I have no way on hand to measure or detect that.
So, knowing that, what could be out there that no one has figured out how to measure or detect yet?

This is brilliantly worded! There is so much that we "don't know" the answers to.

For those who are interested, this is a video that explains how the Silver Bridge failed.https://youtu.be/8w5Fjouvma8
There is one aspect that the video doesn't explain well. When one describes a metal as "tough" they are not describing its hardness, but rather its malleability (how easily it bends). The harder a metal is, the more brittle it is.
I just finished reading the book and I was really disappointed in it. It is so overrun with UFO sightings the Mothman feels forgotten.

Just finished the book and it is a hard "no" from me. Sorry, folks. Wow. Looking forward to us doing a group watch of the movie though. I need to watch it to redeem my love for the story and the Mothman legend.
I just went ahead and got a refund for the book. It was ok but I didn’t care one way or the other if I finished it.

IKR? I was shocked when I read the book after seeing the movie way back when. I debated whether I should say something when peeps started nominating this, but decided not to play spoiler. It certainly did meet the topic.

i thought i knew what to expect but like Debbie said, it's kinda dry.
It was a strange read! Not what I was expecting at all. I was disappointed, I felt like it missed the point somewhere along the crazy mess of lines that was the story.
I was super excited about reading this one, but after reading all of your comments I think I'm going to end up very disappointed. I'm going to make a start today any way!!
I'm in the majority here. It took me over a week to read it, and I can usually read three books in that time. Major slump for me. Definitely like the movie so much more.(view spoiler)
Just wrapped this up today, too. I agree with everyone who said this feels messy in its approach to the narrative. While I don't rule out the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe (or alternate dimensions or what have you), there is little in the book that struck me as a convincing argument, and also, argument for what? The ultimate conclusion is there is no conclusion? At any rate, excited to watch the movie again to compare and contrast! And also to move on to the second book for May.

"and also, argument for what? The ultimate conclusion is there is no conclusion?"Exactly! Fewer examples and more time building an argument would have gone a long way.

I feel like J.K. Simmons in Burn After reading. "Report back to me when it makes sense."
Really disappointing read for me. Felt like a series of disjointed, partially connected events. Quite dated too, very much of its time. No direction to the narrative, but some compelling weirdness. Not seen the film, but might check it out.
To test out the Kast stream, I'm going to roll with a couple of alien-related movies tonight. You can find the app link in this discussion thread and here's the link to the room I set up: https://s.kast.live/g/ki9zzjqppyqThought I'd play one about the Phoenix lights and another recent one called Dark Encounter I've never seen.

"They are not from outer space. There is no need for them to be. They have always been here. "
I actually like that argument more than the outer space one. Nature makes all kinds of weird stuff, and I like the idea that there are things here that look "supernatural" to us because don't understand them yet.
I'm hoping to start this weekend, so more thoughts soon.
