Julian also has the added hurdle of only being able to count books/points from the day he hits 100 comments and officially signs up for the competition... those are the late arrival rules...

So probably best to just read like normal and accept a few lost points, this first year... rather than hamstringing yourself...

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments OH yeah? I thought it was whatever read in the year. Good to know.

For Michael Sullivan Fans

Nolyn is the Daily Deal on Audible today. I got it. I'm not excited about it, but I got it. =P

Also, I'm gonna wait until #3 of that trilogy is due to be out before I start reading it.

message 2903: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Ouch, that could be a lot of lost points depending on how long it takes.

And who is Andrea Parsneau?

message 2904: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Aw, aren't you reading our responses?

Also, if you hover over your name on the browser, you can see your current comment count in the group. Right now, you are at 59 comments. Chat in whatever threads that catch your interest. Join buddy reads. You'll probably get to 100 in a week or less. =)

I recommend getting the audiobook for the Wandering Inn Vol1. That's how I was able to get into the series. Andrea Parsneau is a great narrator. After listening to Vol1, I read the other volumes on the website. I like the series enough to buy the audiobook as they are released and joined the author's Patreon for early access.

If you have Audible, I've seen Wandering Inn Vol1 go on sale at least once a year. If you don't want to spend money, just read from the website.
...

Iain gave you links for the Wandering Inn on Amazon & Audible, but I don't think he mentioned Andrea Parsneau until later.

message 2905: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Oh whoops, I remember seeing that comment. I ended up taking Lain's advice from another comment and converted the book in the website into an ebook format however. I've never had audible before.

As for buddy reads, I'm signed up for 2.5 right now (technically the wandering inn is and isn't one right now?). I don't know how many I can manage to do so for now I want to only try a few. In between fiction reads (actually its the other way around kinda) I like trying to read a nonfiction as well, even though it tends to slow me down.

Im not sure you can view comment count from phone browser without checking profile or member info in group…

I’m of the same mind for Rise & Fall / Nolyn / Farilane, after feeling burned by Legends of the First Empire 4-6… I’ll pick it up for $4 tho, no-brainet

message 2908: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments @lain Comment count is usually a complete surprise for me, I usually find out what I'm currently at whenever someone says something lol. Most of the time I assume I have like 10-20 comments less than whatever I currently have

message 2909: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Favorite quote so far of wandering inn:

"Why couldn't this be minecraft instead?"

xD

message 2910: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments I'm in the same boat with Sullivam’s next series. I'll wait til all three are out before I commit. Usually he writes fast tho.

message 2911: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I got Sullivan's Winter Sale email. The 3rd book of the trilogy will be out summer of 2023. So, we should aim for a BR in 2023. This may be the earlier we loosely plan a BR. LOL

Julian, glad you're enjoying it!

Brian, when do you want to start the Wandering Inn? Don't overbook yourself. Even with the audiobook, it'll take time to read Volume 1. The audiobook is 43hrs. XD

I usually listen to it within a few days. Heh

I remember the first Stormlight book taking about a week in 2017, before I got serious about 2-3x speedups… rereads only took 2-3 days…

I like noticing comment milestones, but usually miss them… like passing 15k in the group recently… 3000-4000 comments per year, altho I did alot that first year or 2… only 2000 this past year…

message 2914: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Since I hit the 100 comment mark, I haven't paid attention to the comment #'s. Hehehe

I don’t make a habit of checking yearly numbers… mostly know from digging for book ratings/reviews last week… I remember making a bigger deal before stealing #1 commenter from the mods, who have inflated numbers from starting 90% of threads…

You are the social butterfly of the group! It's great! =D

Also, why the heck am I awake? I should be sleeping. At least, napping?

I definitely connected with alot of Book Buddies, my first year in the group and the first year of the competition... some have lasted longer than others (mostly because some people don't login anymore, really)... I make a conscious effort to keep BRing with those people...

I don't feel like I interact with the newer members as much, tho, unless they start frequenting my hangouts (like Julian), or do a big Sanderson Buddy Read that I tagged along on (Beena, Paula, etc)...

message 2918: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments So far I've mostly just interacted here and where there's talks about wheel of time.

Book haul is currently in progress as we speak!

You picked a good spot to start wracking up comments without looking like you're milking it ;)

This is also a good thread for book hauls... we're kinda terrible for your wallet... we buy alot from the monthly Audible sales (seems pretty monthly, Audible is always doing $5/6/7 sales and 2-for-1-credit sales... and holiday sales, event sales, sales sales sales...

message 2920: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments That Audible sale where they were selling most of a series was hard on my pocket, but totally worth it! Paperback prices instead of the $25-40 bucks without membership.

message 2921: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Lol once I reach 100 comments I don't think I'll pay attention to it at all.

I feel like you all will make me end up eventually caving and getting audible someday lol. Until now I've relied solely on libby for audiobooks. If I stuck with solely ebooks I'd probably never spend a penny on books ever.

message 2922: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Half price books clearance isle is dangerous. I ended up purchasing more books than intended.

I got the first two books in Sanderson's Skyward series, Brave New World, The Life of Henrietta Lacks, and two random $2 clearance books that sounded interesting.

Me and Soo are audiobook fiends... Brian and Tammie read a fair amount of audiobooks, too... but me and Soo have all the services for maximizing out audiobook savings...

Hoopla (me) / Libby, max credit membership, sales purchases, discounted Kindle Unlimited for free audiobooks and because checking out an ebook sometimes gets you access to $2/$7 audiobooks...

message 2924: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments About half of the books that I read are audiobooks but they all come from libby. I had no idea that kindle unlimited included audiobooks as well. It wasn't until this year though that I started using audiobooks.

If KU provides free audio, there will be an earphones icon next to the KU text...

Some examples:

The Palace Job
Into the Black
Boundary Crossed
Terms of Enlistment

message 2926: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments I thought kindle unlimited was just for ebooks this entire time. Do you get more value from kindle unlimited or from audible?

Also bit of an aside but when I first heard you all mentioning KU here I was so confused and kept thinking you all were referring to Kansas University lol.

message 2927: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments Hahaha. I have max credits on audible and KU. I feel I get full value on both and ace money overall. Especially after befriending Soo, Iain, Tammie, and Narilka. They are reading machines!!!

Audible also has a free perk called Audible+ that provides a library of audiobooks you can just read for free...

KU wouldn't be as useful to me, if not for the ability to save money buying books... so it's more of a package deal...

KU might be more useful to you, depending how much ebook reading you do... I did a ton of that from 2012-2016, but from the time I started listening to audiobooks in late 2014, it really kinda started replacing ebooks and the occasional paperback, completely... now I only read stuff I really want to read that doesn't have audio, basically...

message 2929: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Don't forget Evan Currie (SF) and trashy mysteries, cheesy thrillers and handful of golden goodies that have to be dug up in Kindle Unlimited.

Audible & KU are only worth it if you read enough books via the services. Iain and I read & listen to a ton of books. The membership fees end up making the sale/credit purchases to be about the same as paperback novels $5-7. Since we got into our audio kick, we enjoy doing audiobook re-reads. So, there's replay value for stories we like.

My advice for Kindle Unlimited AND Audible, if you decide to try either of the services:

- Get the trial for KU/Audible. You can usually try for 30 days for free with one credit/etc. You will have to see if you use the service enough to make it worth paying for it.

- Cancel your service before it turns into a monthly/etc fee. You'll get an email asking why you are canceling. You can say due to price/etc. When you give that reason, you'll end up getting a discount deal to try the service for another 1 to 3 months.

- Trying out the services for 3-4 months will give you a good idea of how much you will use it.

Kindle Unlimited: There's a decent selection of Read & Listen (let's you borrow ebook & audiobook). A huge selection of ebooks. The trick is finding the good ones from the bad.

Audible: I believe you'll have access to Audible Plus catalog. It works like KU. You can borrow the audiobook to listen as long as it's in the catalog. There's no real warning when a book will be taken out of the catalog, so it's good to listen to those within a few months.

On top of the Audible Plus, you will get 1-3 credits to purchase audiobook. You can return any book you don't like for free, but there are new rules about it. I don't think you can return it if you listened to the whole book, etc.

If you have KU & Audible, there's a sneaky discount for audiobooks. If the book is on KU and Audible, the audiobook may be available at a discounted rate. You borrow the ebook on KU and can buy the audiobook for cheaper. Generally the prices I like to go for are between $1.99 to $7.49.

If you decide that you like KU, wait until Amazon runs one of their sales. It happens about twice a year. Buy a 2 year membership at 30-40% discount.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments On Audible, I love deals. So, I go on a bundle search once in a while. 1 credit (It's like 9.49 for me) for 35-50+ hours for a whole series, trilogy, etc.

Just be careful to listen to the samples with unknown narrators. Sometimes they suck. lol

message 2931: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Hm, looks like I'm not napping! Okay, I'm gonna try to finish Master Hunter K. I'm reading the rest of the story on the translator's website. Free is nice.

Going to drop Iron Widow from today and listen to it next week.

message 2932: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments I think that eventually I'll try out audible since it would cover a lot of my audiobook needs. When it comes to ebooks they have always been my favorite way to read, however finding ebooks is extremely easy in comparison to audiobooks.

@Soo are you dropping it so that it'll be included in the 2022 competitions?
