Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Got a series recommendation email from Audible. It recommended Pendergast, some Lee Child series that suck and Reacher. LOL

Audible should already know that I have the books or reading the series since I've bought Pendergast & Reacher. Haha

If you're missing any books, Audible starts hounding you for books missing from the collection... it does that to me, too... I usually only buy books when I can't get them elsewhere, so my collections are spotty...

A good example is a couple of books in JD Robb's In Death series... the first 4 books the narrator did were terrible... no distinct voices/etc... and they were actually books 11-14 or something like that... so years later she re-recorded them... but the library copies I was listening to only had the originals... so I bought the better versions, and now Audible has 40+ other books in the series to try and get me to buy...

Parasite: Into the last chunk of the book now, around 70%... it's like the family can't decide if they're gonna be a nice normal family or the evil Britney Spears conservatorship... keeps seesawing...

Hopefully in books 2-3 Sal has more autonomy... altho so far it's looking rough... she still hasn't accepted she's (view spoiler)

That CEO guy is a real piece of work, too, in the interviews at the start of each chapter... I feel like you were reading this book last week, Soo, when you made that comment about corporations and shady business practices...

Don't Go Out Alone: the children's book aspects of the story give me creepy Wayward Children vibes... or Middlegame... this was a precursor to those stories, I think...

Speaking of Middlegame... turns out I'm a year late on the Seasonal Fears news...

Bar press release said it was the anticipated sequel (which I wasn't expecting until 2029ish, based on an interview I read)... and it isn't... it's more in the vein of Swarm and Steel... set in the same world, Roger & Dodger make a cameo...

Still something to look forward to... and maybe you can get a new non-Amber Benson narrator since it's unrelated, Soo...

message 2155: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yeah, I read Parasite a few days ago. Corporations & shady practices has more to do with people wanting to support wholesome businesses. Unfortunately, we're rapidly crashing into lifestyles where corporations are dictating many things. It's been like that for a long time and it's getting more entrenched.

Post when you finish Parasite. I really liked the ending.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Hey, anyone else pick up Tinker #1? It was in one of the many Audible sales. I started it and I like it! =)

Nice mix of cool setting, dash of humor and fun characters. I'm in the beginning of it right now.

Sounds interesting... I don't have it, tho... seems like an interesting author that's released a fair amount of books in the past 2 decades, despite a small amount of ratings/reviews... Elfhome is the majority of her books/shorts, but a couple attempts at other series, too...

3 others on my friend's list read it, most enjoyed it, and said interesting things about the genre mashup... I'll check it out if I can...

For now I need to finish Parasite then probably start Slow Horses,,,

95%: Sherman & the Ultrasound Techs: WAIT: (view spoiler)

Everything is being vague and suggestive right now... about to be the big reveal, I think...

And Sal needs to quit being willfully ignorant about her own true identity... that scene where she told Nathan and Tansy that the accident caused the perfect brain damage to thwart the tapeworms???... really?

All that author's covers look pretty low budget... I'm a sucker for judging books badly by covers... still picked up Villains Rule, tho, on the last Audible Sale...

message 2163: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 5825 comments The cover for Tinker looks like traditional art and probably cost a bit. It's the floating fish thing that turned me off.

message 2164: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Narilka wrote: "Nope. It's bad of me but I couldn't get over that horrible cover lol Hope your review changes my mind."

LOL Aw, the cover is classic style. It makes me think of a lot of the books that were released in 80-00's.

Hahahah! I just enlarged the cover. What a wacky fish-monster. I didn't pay it too much attention. I've seen the author in bookstores & libraries. Had her books tagged to read.

Thus far, I like the setup. Some of it is a bit rough to take in at face value, but there's no slow point.

OOO Let us know what you think of Night's Gift. That looks like fun!

message 2165: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 5825 comments Is the weird fish monster in the book? As much as I love traditional art covers it always bugged me when artists just painted whatever and not something related to the story.

message 2166: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 5825 comments Peter Clines just announced his next book release for March 2022. Brand new series: https://thoth-amon.blogspot.com/2021/...

“Jack Reacher meets Stranger Things.”

message 2167: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments *facepalm* So... I think the weird monster on the cover is supposed to be the dog-like creatures that attacked in the beginning of the book. MC called them wargs. A bit later, you find out that they are Chinese foo dog magical constructs. Ya know, the goofy looking guardian lions? Usually see them at entrances.

Tinker - If the other books come up on a sale, I'll get them. You guys may be able to get the books via library. My library had the books, but the deal must have expired because her books are no longer available in my library system.

My problem with Spencer is that the core concepts are super cool and the characters tend to be interesting. However, the actions, thoughts or events will happen that make me think the MC is dumb or the author wants the reader to take a bunch of wacky (doesn't fit well within the story) bits at face value. Hand-wavy nonsense.

Overall, the story has a fantastic setting, okay characters and kinda dumb pivotal plot events that made the book popcorn fun, but not one of great substance.

message 2168: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36363 comments Mod
I thought wargs were just wolves... that's what they are in wow, and wikipedia says it's the anglicized translation of the Norse word for wolf...

Yea, I was a bit hypercritical of the Tinker cover... I think I'm still right about some of the other colors, but also the font choices are coloring my perceptions...

Hoopla only seems to have her standalone books, not the Elfhome series... need to look into Libby (and get the app if necessary)...

Peter Clines is exciting... shame there's no news about Threshold in the new FAQ... just Ex-Heroes and the new series... only Threshold comment was about the Audible Exclusives contract... and his talk of diminishing returns for long-running series in regards to Ex-Heroes... but I hoped his talk of Threshold being a shared universe with standalones and connected stories might make it more viable for him to keep writing more books for it...

Read a little bit of Slow Horses… didn’t match what I thought the blurb implied… actually a botched operation with a subway station bomber… had to pause because narrator wasn’t loud/deep enough to hear at work…

Doing my System Apocalypse #7 re-read instead… should finish around the time I can go back to Slow Horses and hear it…

That is the strangest interpretation of a foo dog I've ever seen lol

message 2173: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Well, if you think about what a warg/wolf-like mix or foo dog/lion-like mix and then none of the descriptions actually match what happened & was thought about within the story. Except, it's a good example of seeing something that's unknown & making comparisons. Though, in that case, I would think dog like would have been the chosen descriptor vs a known label.

Peter Clines - I'm excited there's a new book! No sign of the book title on GR, but I'm sure it'll show up at some point.

message 2174: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Trying out Hawaii and I kinda want the ebook too. The time jumps are not distinct. If there's a description of the time, it wasn't added to the audiobook. So it's sorta all over the place.

Bit further into Slow Horses... trying not to rush to judgement... about 25% already, and the story is still fleshing out all the backstories... there's 11 spies in Slough House... turns out one of the other ones was the one from the blurb that left intel on a train... in a shiny red envelope that said Top Secret, lol...

Several of the people sound like they were screwed over...

Skimmed some reviews and it sounds like the plot picks up soon...

On some level, this book is making me think of the movie Burn After Reading... where the gym trainers get ahold of some random retired spy data and get tangled in a web trying to blackmail some cosmetic surgery money... tons of big actors...

Aw, my library doesn't have that series. I did read the first book. Probably an Audible sale. I miss Mitch Rapp! Totally agree that the new guy is not as good.

I thought I would listen to other books during Hawaii, but I'm somewhat captivated by the odd mishmash story. It's basically Hawaiian history with fictional adaptation for how it all happened. So, based on real myths and history, but fictional flesh out of how that all happened. I really want to ask one of my Hawaiian friends if the pronunciation is correct in this audiobook.

I've read the first 5-6 Mitch Rapp books, but no further... re-read the early ones because I read them years ago... need to try and make it further...

Re:Slow Horses: like I said above, the intro is a bit slow, revealing nearly a dozen backstories from personal POVs before really pushing the main plot of the book forward, but I think it's paid off in fleshing out the characters before shenanigans started... in the home stretch now, but probably won't finish until drive to work tomorrow and a bit into my work shift...

Almost read 2 whole books today...

Horses… crazy how many people’s backstories connected to one another OR to the case in this book… can’t wait to see what happens in the 2nd book…
