RETIRED THREAD: Vagabond Treehouse Book Club
Took a look at the flash sale... more manageable, at only 10 pages on default settings... mix of memoirs, nonfiction and fiction it seems... about a dozen books I've read before...
Picked up Villains Rule
Picked up Villains Rule
Yesterday, I picked up Strange the Dreamer & Murderhobo #1. Eh, only got the Murderhobo because it's by Dakota Krout. It doesn't have good reviews, but I generally like his writing.

I liked Strange the Dreamer when I read it 2 years ago, I think it was... interesting duology...
I skipped Murderhobo for the reviews, and Infinite Jest for the complicated endnote situation... sounded like a book that takes work to listen to and read the endnotes in a separate PDF...

Not sure I mentioned reading The Last Mrs. Summers yesterday and the day before... liked it more than Love and Death Among the Cheetahs... not liking the Cheetah one had me delay reading the Mrs. Summers one so long, that God Rest Ye, Royal Gentlemen will be out soon...
Cozy Mystery series in the 1920s/30s with a cousin once removed of the Queen of England that's about 30th in line for the throne... has a knack for stumbling upon murders and helping solve them... I solved the mystery by the halfway point, but enjoyed it anyway...

I have the 1st book for Her Royal Spyness on my TBR. From today's flash sale, I picked up Parasite and Muse of Nightmares.
Not sure why I didn't get an Audible notice but the audio for Broken Council #10 is out. I'll be listening to that soon. Usually, I read the book when it comes out and then do an audio re-read. This time, I didn't finish the book. Mostly because I was more into reading Wandering Inn and then I got on the comic spree rollercoaster. lol
I'll hopefully continue with System Apocalypse soon... still back on book 7ish, I think... the more I distance myself from the series, the more I see similarities to Sandman Slim a little... the trilogy aspect, 12 books, and disappearing for a long stretch after book 6, like Sandman keeps ending up in Hell for awhile between trilogies...
I can see that! Though I doubt Tao Wong has ever read Sandman Slim. I'm not sure if that guy has time to read much for fun with all of the writing and making a publishing company, etc. I'm only a fan of some of his work. Which kinda sucks because I can't leave him on the 'read everything by this person' list. Eh, I guess that's normal though.
Yea... some authors just have 1 amazing series and the rest are alright, it seems...
I've considered reading other Tao Wong series, and other Charles Stross series, among others...

Just noticed your flash sale purchases... Parasite is the Mira Grant series I haven't read, yet...

I see they did similar things with another Royal Spyness book... I saw about half as many books I'd read before today, I think...

You know how you can read a bunch of good books and it's fine until you read one that's great? Then all the other books are sorta bland? LoL Peerless Dad aka Unrivaled Father is a story written by Noh Kyungchan and the art is done by Lee Hyun-Seok. The art style is like Beserk anime. It seems rough around the edges but there's a lot of detail for background & characters. Plot flow is a bit uneven but I don't care because I love the characters! Also, the plot is a traditional Kung Fu type that I really like! =D
I enjoyed Peerless Dad a bunch! Now I have to wait until more chapters are released. Probably going to put it on back burner until end of the year.
The GR info for the story is not accurate, and I found several imposter authors on here that are taking credit for work they haven't done. Not sure if it's done by people trying to spam/cheat or done by users that have no idea how to check their info before making an author/book post.
I've been listening to Personal Demons, a harem series I started years ago... it actually has a fair amount of plot... I think books 2-3 fade to black more often than the first book did, which apparently was originally posted online on a web erotica site...
Anyway... I'm halfway through book 3, and the MC and his angel companion just met a Djinn in the Middle East, who asked to know EVERYTHING that's going on, and the MC made a quip about it being a good 44hrs of narration, not including the recent events... I had to check Audible, but yea, the first 2 books add up to 44.75hrs of audio... meta jokes :D

LOL Do you like the books? I have my eye on that series too, but ya know what a wacko rollercoaster it has been for me to try out any romance/erotica/etc on audio. Most of it just comes across as stupid ridiculous and makes the plot come across as cheap plastic wrap.
From what I remember, the first book is heavy on the sex... being a web erotica series to start, basically every chapter needed sex, since it was released a chapter at a time...
Later books focus on the plot more...
It's about a college guy who stops a satanic ritual and accidentally becomes the Master to a succubus and his own raunchy guardian angel... lots of sex ensues... and the succubus makes him nearly irresistable to the opposite sex... so he hooks up with tons of people, including some lesbian/bi witches and his high school crush... he also attracts the attention of local vampires and werewolves and covens and demons, and gets his friends involved...
At this point, they're kind of this Scooby Gang stumbling from one big magical threat to the next... FBI task forces and military units aware of the supernatural get involved... it's kinda all over the place... but I'm enjoying it...
I read the first book back during my erotica/romance days... only read like 20% of the 2nd book back then, and the author spent a long time focusing on his sci-fi series Rich Man's War... but he recently got back to writing these books, apparently, and I picked up 1-2 of them on one of the Audible sales this year, and read them when the mood strikes... figure I'll finish these before giving Fostering Faust a shot, the other harem series I picked up on sale...

Finished Personal Demons, and started The Last Bloody Straw... been months since I read Blood and Treachery... been reading a bunch of stuff that's been growing dust in my iPhone book app...
Can't really take a scarecrow seriously... I know I saw a Supernatural episode involving them years ago, but these days I just think of the Bo Burnham song where he keeps describing a scarecrow instead of a generic female love interest...

Probably gonna go on a Hoopla spree tomorrow or the next day... end of the month and I've been hording my credits unused...
looking at my favorites, I'll probably be picking up:
A Blade So Black
The Wrong Dead Guy
A Peculiar Peril
Phule Me Twice
Blood Hollow
Most of these are books I favorited from previous Audible sales... Phule's Company is because I lack other books to checkout... and Blood Hollow is me planning ahead for the next Cork O'Connor book... I'll have 3 weeks to get to it...

I'm down to read A Peculiar Peril or Phule Me Twice around when you do. =) I put in for Cork #4 at my library. Hopefully, my hold will come in sooner vs later.
Just read a great J-Drama manga and it totally had me twisted upside down with how well the author+artist depicted the relationships and characters. I can't wait for more of it to be released so I can see what happens. =D
I put a hold for cork #4 as well. Not sure where Tammi is with #3 so I’m good to wait. Mine says 2 weeks for hold.

I checked out everything except the Cork book... waiting another day or 2 on that... also picked up Driving the Deep... forgot that in my list above... it's availability on Hoopla is half the reason I added it to my TBR a few days ago...
I'll probably end up reading half of these in the next week or so, that way I find time to read all 6 over the next 3 weeks... lowest priorities are Cork #4 and Phule Me Twice...
I'll probably read Peculiar Peril sometime in the next week, along with The Wrong Dead Guy and Driving the Deep...

Audible Flash Day 3:I got the 3rd Ex-Heroes book. I have 1 & 2. Need to get 4th when it comes on sale. =D
Cork #4 - I'm somewhere around 2 week wait on my hold too. So I think I'll get it around the same time as Brian. I hope! LoL
When do you guys want to read The Mirror’s Truth #2? I do want to see how this duology will wrap up.
I think Brian was ready to do it this weekend?… after current/last book…
DCI Logan #5, The Last Bloody Straw, is giving me some serious Hot Fuzz vibes… (view spoiler)

Good one! I didn't notice the pie. I remember thinking the island & the town people being interesting, but I thought the case was hand wavy. You're almost caught up to me. My next DCI is #7 the Big Man Upstairs. =)
I haven't read Ex-Heroes yet, but I can't see myself not liking anything by Peter Clines. He's a solid I'll either like or love author for me. The books go on sale regularly enough that I knew I could get them all at some point. With current sale, I was able to get all 3 of the 4 books within this year. =D
The title really seemed well-picked by the end... between the scarecrow surveillance, the baddie, and the last line zinger for the setup for book 6... it was funny because the narrator repeated the title right after the ending, and it seemed like an in-character comment until the author was mentioned...
The baddie seemed to come out of nowhere, altho I guess there was a bit of setup earlier in the book... the real surprise was the identity of Isaac's father... they really set that up to be Logan, and then pulled the rug out from under the reader without much explanation, altho I can easily piece it together... that guy was a piece of work from the beginning...

Some more than others... especially this one...
(view spoiler) ... this was The Last Bloody Straw... by JD Kirk...

Started Finder #2… liking it at 2x speed… narrator seems easy to stop paying attention to what he’s saying… probably why I didn’t love book 1 at 3x speed…
I only do 3x speed for stories that I want to be done as fast as possible or where the narrator is really slow. lol =)Today's Flash Sale Buys:
- Nightwoods
- Raven Black
Until about a year ago, I did everything at 3x for awhile… now I just do 2x to enjoy more unless I really want a book done like you said… or Covid just made me less able to listen so fast… 🤷♂️
Forgot to check yesterday’s sale… past 50% on Diving the Deep… title makes more sense now, compared to where the story started…

Picked up The Cuckoo's Calling & Noir...
Considered a few others, but the reviews were pretty scathing about the narration...

Ha! I totally glossed over Cuckoo's Calling. I'll get it too. $5 is reasonable. Hopefully, it doesn't suck.

Sweet! If Tammie gets the audio, we are all set to go whenever we get to it. I think the plan was to do it after we wrap up Alex Benedict.

I had to doublecheck... it has a different cover on Audible, seemed like a movie/TV-Show tie-in?

Most of us just came to the consensus we’d give it a shot together, recently, over in the mystery thread… tentatively in late October/November, when we finish Alex Benedict, the shorter of 2 ongoing series over there…
Started Crimson Shore this morning… Pendergast #15… blurb didn’t sound familiar, but I recognized it the second Pendergast and Constance got to the small town and started messing with the police chief… re-reading it anyway…

Pendergast is fun. He's like a modern Sherlock Holmes and the cases are an interesting mix of science and other. =)
