King Bullet: ARC reviews sound super positive about how well it's ended...

Wandering Inn: Back to Ryoka, reading Magnolia's history books... makes me wonder (view spoiler)

message 1902: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Wandering Inn: It's a potential answer! I do think we will find out at some point.

Sandman Slim: There are so many things that haven't been touched or dealt with that I'm not sure if I will think it's satisfying. No way am I going to read reviews on that book! Not spoiling it for myself. lol

Wandering Inn seems like a series that could go on forever, at this point... plenty of time to reveal all the mysteries...

Sandman Slim: I wasn't aiming for spoilers, just a cursory glance after reading the blurb... blur sounds like nefarious Covid plot...

I agree it's a tall order to wrap everything up, and I had big problems with that 2nd trilogy... sounds like Kadrey is ready to start a new series... hope it's decent...

Already near 75% done with Wandering Inn 3.5... gonna be a shame to run out of audiobooks again... it's a great series, but I don't have time/inclination to read the web serial or an epub version of the web serial all day... it's great being able to listen while terraforming my way around Terraria...

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I'm not a fan of the text readers, but you could go that route. Most people seem to be okay with it. I wasn't a fan of the copy, paste & listen to voice. Had fun trying out different voices. lol

I'm almost done with my Vol6 re-read. I was close to finishing that when I started to read comics. lol Comics have sidetracked me! Heheh

Pirateaba is on break. I have about 4 chapters unread in Vol8. I'll probably let it pile up a bit more and dive into it.

I did some TTS books before, but honestly, I prefer professional, and dunno if I could do TTS on a series I've already heard some books professionally...

Wandering Inn sidetracked me from finishing Manifest Delusions...

I wonder how well Pirateaba originally lined up the Winter Solstice storyline with real world Christmas... between the reindeer frost faeries and the mistletoe hijinks, it's checking alot of boxes and creating alot of hilarious moments...

Pisces seems to have "won" the mistletoe scene...

OMG... the Mrsha and matches story was great... "this isn't how getting in trouble is supposed to go"...

BUT, Relc and Klgch trying to be Santa around town to get more presents from Erin is 100x better... can't stop laughing... I think they're unintentionally channeling more olden stories where Santa was scary... mostly just because they're a Drake and Antinium...

message 1910: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Brian, no worries! I'm probably going to start Beyond Redemption later today or tomorrow. =)

Wandering Inn:

TTS - What a hilarious nightmare! I tried with several books and I can't handle the mispronunciations. It drives me batty!

Pisces being a ladies man is HILARIOUS! (view spoiler)

Mrsha and matches was a great side story. =D

Ralc & Klblch were hilarious in trying to figure out the whole how to get more presents and not coal. Hahahahhah

I didn't know what to think of the closing Interlude of Volume 4... wasn't really satisfying as a final chapter, since it introduced so many questions...

Quick search online shows that I'm not the only one that things the 3-6 characters were (view spoiler)

Also noticed that Volume 4 ended December 30th, 2017, so definitely real world timing lined up...

message 1912: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36367 comments Mod
Looks like Volume 4 starts with 6 chapters about King Flos... more content than we've gotten from him in Volume 1-3 combined... but I jumped ahead and read the first Erin chapter, to see how that's going... and it seems like Erin is making her life busier, starting a magical soup business...

message 1913: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments LoL the irony about the magic food Erin makes is that the way they are talked about is inconsistent. Affects and cheaper than other potions are the same but whether or not it tastes awful or better than potions is a roller-coaster.

message 1914: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36367 comments Mod
Yea... she also severely undervalues her skills... she could be rolling in money, if she had someone like Kirshia managing her prices...

I assume the taste has to do with freshness, partially?... altho I guess Pirateaba can't decide how much the needs of the magical recipe are hindering flavor?... early on, Erin was hopeful that once she made functional magical food, she could fine-tune the taste... then again, with high demand comes less time to perfect... that's kinda been Erin's problem since returning from Celum and finding the Inn crowded with guests...

message 1915: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Trying to make the magic food taste better is a running joke/theme in the later volumes. There's a few story additions that deep dive into alchemy/etc. It gets interesting because it's dependent on Alchemist skills/etc.

For Erin, I think if taste was a priority vs the magical effect, it would taste good and be magical. The whens and hows stuff works for Erin is one of the ongoing mysteries.

Gods: Not going to touch that one because a lot happens in Vol7/8. Hahahhahahhah

Since I'm on my 2-3+ re-read of some of the volumes, it's cool to note how early hints are strewn all over the volumes. I forgot some of them because so much happens.

Volume 4 seems to be expanding the plot again... focusing on elements that were barely touched on in Volumes 1-3... Flos, the stuff going on in Rhir... etc... that chapter I read that had Erin, also has a chunk of Klgkch and Xrn, that revealed their plans for returning to Rhir (view spoiler)

message 1917: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments =) It's a lot of stuff that expands on characters, various politics, etc. Plus funny moments to be thrown in with the tragic.

Can't seem to catch a break this summer... upstairs' neighbors' AC was acting up, had one inch of ice on the pipes... didn't notice until water started leaking through ceiling in my bathroom... called emergency maintenance last night and they resolved the leak, but water built up in my ceiling and took hours to stop for the most part... still too late, around 5am this morning the 2ft x 3ft plasterboard tile came down and I called maintenance out again...

Dehumidifying now... they'll be out a couple times over the next week to treat the ceiling once it dries and prep it for a new tile to be put up and sealed...

The wonders of a basement apartment... best thing is cooler summer temps... I always hear horror stories about trying to cool 2nd/3rd floor apartments since heat rises from lower apartments...

Been chugging along in my reading... read Trigor, the followup to Pilot X... I picked it up back in March, I think... didn't like it as much as the first one, so when I found out the epilogue setup a 3rd book I kinda just sighed...

Then I loaded my phone up with book 2s of books I enjoyed last week, and picked up The Gray Man... been thinking about it since Brian read Relentless...

Read about 60% of that today, too... light on character details, lots of action... see why people compare it to Jason Bourne movies...

message 1924: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Which is ironic considering that the Bourne books are like the movies and not. LoL

Yea... I think I read the first Bourne book... never made it further... the movies are much faster paced, since it cuts the slow parts, as movies tend to do...

message 1926: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Okay, Viral Hit is one of the most ridiculously action packed comics. I didn't like it at first because it started off with a cringe worthy bully scene. Then it snowballed into a story where I'm watching the train wreck and cheering on the MC. LOL

This is really good! Teamwork of two artists. It's an ongoing series and there are 73 chapters out.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Aw, more changes to GR and making it less useful as a book sharing/loving community.

Is there a good option that's not GR? I haven't found one...

message 1928: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 5825 comments What did they change now?

message 1929: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Changed how links work. You can only do named links for GR stuff. External links can only be posted as the link and not renamed link. So if I post about a WebToon comic, I can only post the actual link and not rename it as Viral Hit/etc.

The changes with captcha's & stuff is to help cut down on fake accounts. *shrug* I don't think it's helping that much but most of the recent changes are geared towards that.

Another annoying thing I noticed a few days ago is that I can't delete comments from my reviews. I can only block the user or flag it as spam for GR to deal with.

message 1930: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Woohoo! Google Translator has a live camera function. I'm using that to read Viral Hit on the Korean WebToon. Only for parts. The art is good enough for me to know 80% of what's going on.

message 1931: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36367 comments Mod
That href change is BS… hurting everyone because of bad actors/bots… I haven’t followed a bad link in 8 years here…

The html helper popup and preview don’t indicate the change…

message 1932: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I'm going to guess that GR forgot to update that part. I mean, a lot of the functions here haven't changed for a long time. Though, things have been steadily adjusted since the Amazon buy.

message 1933: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Viral Hit (Comic): It's ongoing and there are over 70 chapters out on WebToon. At first, I thought it was going to be a standard bullied teen learns to stand up for himself story, and it is. It also has great fight scenes & dives into various fighting styles. I like the way it's current & has streaming/video as part of the plot.

There are more chapters on the Korean Webtoon. I went on there and got caught up to the current release. The expressions and fight scenes are great!

message 1934: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 5825 comments Oh joy. I tried the href thing and you get an error even though just like Iain said the "some html" helper and preview both still work.

message 1935: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yeah... it's a topic at SFFBC. The change broke some of the things that Mods post/etc.

This is a cool meteor/falling space debris shot I got during my try to see the meteor shower.

I don't think images are affected as much as external website links. Not sure why that has been deactivated but I'm going to guess that some scammers may have used the function to link to things that may have stolen info/etc?

This is me guessing.

Jumped from Purgatory Ridge to On Target, Gray Man #2... despite having a similar premise to Orphan X, I like how different the action feels, both from Orphan X and other vaguely military combat books... Court Gentry has a way of getting into hectic firefights where he can take advantage of the confusion of multiple factions...

I'm nearing the end now, tho, and that arrow with rotten bird innards for infecting Court was kinda gross and ongoing... and clearly Court wasn't made for bodyguard work... this isn't The Hitman's Bodyguard, with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson...

Honestly, I was kinda disappointed with the first 75-80% of this book (Priest of Gallows), I think... I wasn't in the mood for all the grotesqueness, and I felt like what was going on was obvious, and the MC was somehow naive, despite being a PTSD war vet...

Real machiavellian Hitler / Kristallnacht vibes...

But then Part 2 finally started (I think previous books had 4-5 parts, this one will be lucky to have 3... I think people that say this is more half of a two-part finale are right)... and something just happened that I did NOT see coming, that is probably gonna have awesome ramifications...

There's also been a bit of foreshadowing, like the MC is telling of past events, that indicate things are gonna change drastically before the series is over (quadrology?)

They also resurrected the romance angle that's been frustrating me since nothing came of it in book 2... but at least now I think I see why it's lingered...

I'll definitely get back to comics, but I've been having a bit of an uptick in active gaming and reading, lately... running low on TV I want to watch... been watching Doom Patrol, which feels like a cross between Umbrella Academy and Mystery Men

Priest of Gallows: ending was pretty spectacular, and resolved one of my lingering concerns for how the series could possibly resolve happily, given (view spoiler)

Also seems to have resolved my concerns that the threat of war was turning into a xenophobic red herring... it's still pretty xenophobic, but going to be a focus of the final book, for sure...
