Shadows of the Apt has been good/interesting, but not must-read for me... I stayed to the schedule for the first 2, and there were 3-4 of us reading... dropped to 2 of us by book 3, and I had alot going on in June, with newly added BRs... not abandoning tho... I picked up the first bunch of books with the last of my credits before my new year of credits rolled in, haven't bought the rest yet... might see if they pop up on free alternative before buying... since I've fallen behind the release schedule, there's a chance they might... I think you can get the ebooks and first 2 audiobooks on Overdrive/Libby now...

Been having hearing problems for the past week... went to Urgent Care after work today and had my ears irrigated... been feeling great ever since... they removed SO MUCH WAX... it was positively disgusting :D

I tried using OTC ear drops first, but it only helped in one ear...

I had this procedure done once before, 5-8 years ago... learned about Debrox, the ear drops, then... I use Debrox once or twice a year (used daily for 3-5 days)... it's a peroxide-infused solution that foams and breaks up wax and has a decent chance of clearing out ears...

Eventually it just builds up past the point it can't be dealt with alone, I guess... or I'm doing it wrong...

A coworker said some people just produce more earwax than others... based on what I saw in the capture bowl, I'd agree... there was probably enough wax to make a cherry/olive, from both ears combined...

I thought my right ear could hear 100% fine, but it was probably 80%... left ear had been 10-50% for the past 24hrs, and both had been blocking 90% while sleeping, with Debrox unblocking most mornings until i got fed up...

You can get some disgusting results in google image search, if you want an idea...

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Manifest Delusions has two books? Only the second one is on KU. Are you talking about reading all of the books by the author? It looks like he does duologies as his series.

I remember thinking Ghosts of Tomorrow being ok. I'll be going book by book for this one.

Brian, I'll start Pawn's Gambit tomorrow. =)

Down to start Beyond Redemption after Pawn's Gambit.

Manifest Delusions has 2 books, but Swarm and Steel is a standalone book set in the same world with unrelated characters I think... I only know that from the hype around here when it came out a few years ago...

Beyond Redemption
The Mirror’s Truth
Swarm and Steel

Guess I'm lucky that Illinois has a statewide network with alot of buying power...

Is it because DC is just a district and not a big state?

can you get a card in an adjacent state cheaply?

Thanks... I haven't read it yet... picked it up, and reposted in a bunch of threads for other Murderbot fans...

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I live outside of DC. We have a system where I can apply to a bunch of partnered libraries. I haven't done it yet. My area has a crap ton of mysteries, good chunk of thrillers and A LOT of YA. Pretty sure my county has more parents that are thinking about kids in the network for book recommendations.

My library is good enough that I don't feel like I'm missing out too much. Besides, I miss actually going to them and looking around.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments My Webtoon List:

I'm not posting the new ones that were released this week because they only have a few episodes out. So, it's like waving a lure and hooking you to pay. Cause you can pay to see up to 5 posts early. Don't be like me. Go into them after there's a bunch released. Like, end of the year. LOL

Action/Thriller
- Omniscient Reader (59 Ep): It's a LitRPG/Portal style story. Great art & fun plot. Keeps you on your toes.
- Teenage Mercenary (9 Ep): Ijin Yu survived a plane crash that killed his parents. He grew up in a harsh environment & learned to become a mercenary. Saved some soldiers that end up helping him get back to his family in S. Korea.
- Sweet Home (140 Ep/Completed): Horror/Thriller that has great psychological bent to plot. Totally creepy even if you know what's coming. There are these Daily Pass deals that you can use to 'unlock' an episode per day.
- Gamer (365 Posts/Season 5 Ongoing): LitRPG style for just the main character, Jihan. Great art & storyline. It's a mix of action/comedy that uses a LOT of world mythology and cultures. Getting involved in the magical aspect of the world is called the Abyss. I like how it starts of kind of slow & dopey like the MC and grows more complex over time.
- First Hunter (Ep 7): LitRPG aspect of people being able to gain abilities & stats. Dark action with gritty storyline.
- Strongest Florist (Ep24): Jaeho's dad wants him to be the ultimate MMA fighter. He's a big & strong dude with resting bitch face. LOL He wants to own a flower shop. Goes into a popular VR game to do just that. He has to fight to make it though. Great action/comedy.
- Villain to Kill (Ep10): Superhero vs Villians story. Cassian is a superhero. Crazy stuff happens and he ends up as a villian. Great art, fun plot and NOT ENOUGH EPISODES!
- Advanced Player of the Tutorial Tower (Ep33): LitRPG/Action story. Tutorial towers and dungeons appeared on Earth. Governments/companies figured out that it was worth sending people into the towers to be trained. Those that survive come out with stronger abilities/magic/etc. Hyeonu was stuck in a tutorial tower for 12 years. The snippets of what he did while he was stuck are HILARIOUS! Now he's out and on the rampage to find who imprisoned him.
- Dungeons & Artifacts (Ep20): LitRPG/Action - Stetch is an Explorer. He's kind of like a ranger but for dungeon crawling. This one starts off with action and keeps going at a quick pace. Great art, fun plot.

Romance/Slice of Life:
- Remarried Empress (85 Ep/Season 1 Finished: Drama/Rom with detailed art, interesting world & characters. None of the characters are dumb. Which is nice! Not necessarily likeable.
- Sixth Sense Kiss (Ep10): When Yesul kisses a person, she gets a flash of their future. Stuff happens and she ends up accidentally smooching her boss. She gets a vision of them together! Except she can't stand him. lol
- Tricked into Becoming the Heroine's Stepmother (Ep6): Portal style rom-com. Daisy Heidi is reincarnated in the story that she wrote with her girlfriends. It's a steamy, reverse harem lovefest with one gal and lots of hot dudes. Somehow, she ends up spilling the beans & confessing to the Duke. He's the father of the heroine of the story that DH made up. The kicker is that Pierta (heroine of made up story) is an adorable toddler that the Duke loves to pieces. So he hired DH to help him keep his baby safe from future suitors.
- Let's Play (Ep133/Season 2 Ongoing): I loved the way MMORPG/Games were used for the plot. It's a ton of fun! Plus the characters are all more than first appearance. Layers are unveiled as the story progresses. It is a drama/romance with dollops of comedy.

So I guess I'll double post... Timelord Iain | 2325 comments
I read a bit of Mage and Demon Queen, since people mentioned it a fair bit in the comment section of Advanced Player...

It's an F/F rom-com with 3 seasons and somewhere over 140 episodes I think, including some non-canon extras... it has a similar 105 story tower to Advanced Player, and while everyone else is trying to kill the Demon Queen, the Mage has fallen in love... so much so that the enemies, sub-bosses of the dungeon have befriended her and started letting her up to the top floor without having to do much fighting... they just kill all her allies and force them to go res in town... pretty funny...

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments LOL - Yay sharing good recs! =D

Yeah, GG&G is one of the few groups that I know for sure there are comic readers. There are random people in a few of the other groups I'm in, but not a sure thing like GG&G or here. Enough of comic readers that there would be interest for a post like that vs random talks about US only comics.

I read fan-scans too, but I generally won't post those links. That's one way to get them flagged and taken down. Though, I've only read one recently and that's because I went looking for a story like Omniscient Reader.

I read to the end of one (by paying) on Webtoon and I was COMPLETELY disatisfied by the end. Though, it did keep true to the whole friendship theme but none of the side stories were finished. LAME ending!

message 1826: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Pawn's Gambit

I listened to parts of the story like 3x. Why? Because it failed to consistently keep my attention, but at least it was worth going back to listen because I actually did miss a few points. lol Unlike other stories that had lots of moving pieces, I'd go back to listen and figure out that I missed nothing at all.

I liked the end a lot! The end was great.

Good narration, great side characters, fun additions to the world setting & big hints on next stages of the tale within the world.

I'm not sure if it's errors left in the book, audiobook production mistakes or a combination of the two, but there were lots of little errors that made the story seem less polished than Never Die.

Also, (view spoiler) lol

Brian | 1681 comments I agree Soo. Overall I was disappointed in Pawns Gambit. The first 60% was somewhat boring and failed to keep my interest. The ending was great and it was worth the credit but didn’t excite me like his other works.

Started my Threadbare 3 re-read yesterday… forgot most of this one, including why the game rules are the way they are…

Probably gonna read Vor Game next… been awhile since we read a Vorkosigan book… then Manifest Delusions…

message 1833: by Soo (last edited Aug 13, 2021 06:30AM) (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I was assuming that WebToon is official, not a fansub. Because the artists talk about going to Cons and doing interviews, etc. Is WebToon another fan-sub? The setup doesn't look like it?

Yeah, best way to read WebToon is when most of a season is out. For a long series, get a bunch to read for a few days and then it's wait until the last episodes are posted to see how it ends.

I'll put Vor Game and Manifest Delusions into my reading rotation. I was waiting on Vorkosigan for you guys. =D

message 1836: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments WebToon - Yeah, I thought it was. Though, the amount of errors in typeset for the translations are hilariously consistent. I'm zooming on Wind Breaker. I really like it! It's crazy action, heartfelt emotional scenes and range of humor. I also like the pop culture references. Though, I know I'm only picking up on 2/3 of those. lol

I think webtoon has it’s own in-house translators/editors?… I’ve only read a half dozen different comics, but they seem to have a very specific style of vertical formatting AND text, with occasional asterisk definitions/explanations of Korean terms…

message 1838: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments The downscroll style makes sense. Easy design to work on most webpage template. Blog pages are set that way. That part is basic, but the way the artist work to frame scenes in the vertical format is cool. There are a lot of interesting designs & choices that draws the reader to follow the story in a certain order and flow. It's smart and there are enough different ways of doing it that is stylistically unique to artists.

The way they change brand names are funny too. 😄

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Finished Safehold #9. Listening vs reading has me paying attention to the story in a different manner. I think I may have liked it more as an impressionable kid. Maybe? Maybe not. LoL It has a lot of moving parts and it's an odd mix of fantasy + sci-fi. It doesn't really fit into either category well.

message 1849: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Some narrator's stress the s or elongate it and it soundssss like listening to hissssssing. It's annoying. For some reason, a lot of YA narrators do it. Which is a total turn off for me. Haha!

I think Iain is at work. Not expecting him to respond quickly. The narrator probably won't bother you, Brian.
