RETIRED THREAD: Vagabond Treehouse Book Club
Netflix Hell or Comedy? LoLI went from watching Hannibal ( crazy but well done show) to Tremors 2020 and Welcome to Sudden Death. Both movies are TERRIBLE! I recommend them if you want to watch a bad movie and take shots for ____. Easy to get drunk game. lol
I skipped over to Amazon & watched Gemini. That was good but could have been better. It was tripy to see the "young" version of Will Smith. =)Went back over to Netflix & hopped around. Settled on Code 8. Decent super power movie but the whole spinal fluid used to make drugs is a bit weird even for me.
I should really watch Cobra Kai. I don't know why I'm resistant to it. lol Karate Kid forever!
I found where I stopped in Supernatural. It's during the weird & depressing phase in the later seasons. Probably why I haven't gone back into it yet but I will.
I watched Gemini Man on Hulu... the action scenes are very stretchy, with the 120FPS camerawork they used...
I kinda just can't believe Kobra Kai is a thing... I feel like it grew out of the How I Met Your Mother storyline, where Barney viewed the Kobra Kai kid as the hero of the movie, since the Karate Kid broke the tournament rules to win at the end of the movie, with the kick above the belt...
I'm around season 9 of Supernatural... I want to finish someday, especially now that it's over... Jensen Ackles is going to play Soldier Boy in season 3 of The Boys (which I just finished season 1 of, on Amazon)...
I'm watching Instinct now, a show I found looking for something like Castle... it's a show with Alan Cumming, about a retired CIA operative turned professor who helps the NYPD solve crimes, after a serial killer uses his first book as inspiration in the pilot... definitely giving me vibes... cancelled after 2 seasons...

You had me at Castle and then I realized it's not on either Netflix or Prime. Heh Oh well. Right now I'm not interested in hunting stuff down. Just want stuff to watch that's easy to access. Most of the stuff I want to watch are not in English. Which means I need to watch more than listen. So.... I let cheesy shows run. lol
I envy you all! I have not had a moment to myself these days... I think I will be truly back to reading next month... The only TV I have seen is the NBA playoffs and now the World Series... But I am still here, don't give up on me!
What have you been up to, Choko? =)Eh, I made that insane decision to read 1000 books this year and then stopped reading books. lol Classic irony!
Now, I'm trying to reconstruct my Epic Road Trip in 2018. I'm SO glad I took shots of certain things to show where I was. =D
I can't even go by the tags I left on Google Maps to know exactly where I went because I changed my mind sometimes. I really should have tried to finish organizing these after the trip but I ended up having back to back work and dance events at the tail end of 2018.
I had to track down my photos and now I'm working on putting them into more or less correct date & place folders. lol
Netflix Update:Switching between NCIS, Shooter, Supernatural, Criminal Minds and Blacklist.
Finished Blacklist and it's kind of weird how the core actors are really good actors and the extras are not. Also, someone needs to fire the scriptwriters/directors that keep making the storyline inconsistent.
Some of the stuff that Elizabeth does in the show doesn't make sense because it's out of character.
Cool thing, the last episode for Season 7 was cobbled together between shots done in studio and animation. It was really odd the way they pieced it together but interesting way to complete the season or try out in general. Apparently, the studio was closed before the filming for the final episode was finished. So the weird mix of animation and live vids were mixed together to finish the season.
I got a handful of Audible Escape books done. Hopefully, I'll get the batch of AE books done before the end of the month.
I’m re-watching Supernatural now. Love that show. I gave up on Blacklist. Another example of letting a great story go too long. It got too weird for me.
Most of Season 7 of Blacklist was good. It seemed like the story was falling into place and good connections were made between the past episodes, etc. But! They tried to be too clever with the plot and end up making the characters inconsistent. After all the crap that happened to Elizabeth and what she decided to do in the show, there's no way she would end up acting the way she is in the S7 finale.
Shooter looks decent. I have my fingers crossed for a good action thriller.
One of the Audible Escape stories had good ideas but terrible execution. So, I kept wanting to ditch the book for a good:
historical fiction, love story, action packed adventure, etc.
lol
I was like, man, this person didn't do a whole lot of research into this era, has no idea how to write an action scene and the "love/sex" scene was fade to black but the details that were said were corny as heck.
Upside, the narrator was good and he made the story sound more serious than the words would leave one to think. lol
Should I hunt down Elementary? I never finished it and I do like that show. What did you think?I'm watching Shooter and I love the main character but the plot line is kinda weak.
I was looking for some coppy shows... i loved castle, but haven't fully grown attached to any other longrunning ones, since then... I watched a season or 2 of elementary when it was new... and am enjoying it on rewatch... 7 seasons is a respectable run, and it sounds like a bunch of stuff happened, leading up to the end... and no forced romance to ruin everything, from what little spoiling I did...
I haven't pushed far enough to say definitively, but I'd say try and find it... it's on Hulu like I said, if you're open to that service...

I actually jumped ship from Instinct to Elementary, because I knew Instinct was cancelled, and they were experimenting with pushing into a sherlocky format noticing details... but half the plot/dialogue in Instinct sounded corny and over-the-top... which is sad, since I'm generally a fan of Alan Cumming...
Half the time, it felt like Alan Cumming AS David Caruso on CSI Miami... setting up one-liners for commercial breaks...

lol I've been switching between CSI, NCIS & Shooter. Most of what I've played for CSI and NCIS are re-runs for me. I could figure out where I stopped but not too worried about it.
Watched an episode of a food based anime. It would be fun if it wasn't perved on how food makes people react. lol It's like they're having orgasms when it's "great food". lol
There's a bunch of SHIELD seasons on there. Back to watching that. It's a bit cheesy but that's expected.
I miss Heroes. Wish that lasted longer than it did.
I don't want to pay for a bunch of streaming services. Which is why I'm sticking to Netflix & Prime for now. Ah instant gratification fixes. =P
I haven't been doing very good at finishing things lately... most shows I seem to abandon in season 2... I have a ton of half-finished or 90%-finished audiobooks...
And I'm not really getting much reading done on my days off, in favor of TV...

2020 hasn't been easy by a long shot but it's good to know I can be okay in any kind of situation. That goes for you guys too!=)
SHIELD S3 went weird. Which is kind of how I feel about every season of SHIELD so I guess that's normal?
Meanwhile, I have NCIS playing as background entertainment.
I started Joe Ledger #3 today. The title seems pretty appropriate for 2020, The King of Plagues. So far, very mysterious.
I think I'm done with my Audible Escape Spree. I did get in 22 books and there are about 12 that I wanted to do but I'm not in the mood. It's hard to make myself stick to a genre even if I'm jumping around in the romance genres: paranormal, preternatural, historical, contemporary, dark erotica, comedy & etc. I would have probably listened to more books if I let myself jump out of AE books more often than I did. lol
Joe Ledger
Kill Switch #8 re-read was great! I was questioning why I tagged it as a fav until I realized why.
Maberry ties DMS/Joe into three of his other series: Pine Deep, Dead of Night and Rot & Ruin.
I didn't realize it before because I had not read Dead of Night or Rot & Ruin, but tie ins for those two series are in Kill Switch. It's really well done.
Kill Switch is one of the more insane books in the series. A LOT happens. A LOT. Like, it's the little details that will punch you later kind of a lot. =)
I love that!
I TOTALLY want to chat about it with ya'll when you get there.
I love the (view spoiler) and (view spoiler) stuff... I love how anything can happen in Joe Ledger, but telling people the kinds of things is a big spoiler...
Just wanted to say that I just finished The Dresden Files #9 - White Knight... Best book in the series so far, but it could have been perfect with some pizza loving small fae! I actually felt so many feelings up and down the emotional spectrum, that I am exhausted right now. It is very hard to actually relax while reading the series at this point, because it seems that danger is coming from all sides and the help is getting more and more limited. It is pretty much impossible for Harry and Murphy to be able to survive... And if anything happens to Mouse, I will kill something... I want a dog like him so much!!!! Lots of feels here...
Don't read Iain's spoilers! Those are definitely spoiler spoilers. lol =DDresden Files: Yeah, that's the tough patch. Things just get pretty wacko hard for Harry.
Who doesn't love Mouse? I want one too! lol
Joe Ledger:
Narilka, Pine Deep, Dead of Night and Rot & Ruin are all optional. You don't have to read those. Pine Deep was good but not the best characterization or plot flow by Maberry. His best work is really in Joe Ledger or any time he throws him into the story that's not in the Ledger series. lol
Time Line wise in the Ledger world:
- A few of the books in Joe Ledger.
- Pine Deep
- Kill Switch #8 Connects with Dead of Night & Rot and Ruin
- Rest of Joe Ledger & Seasons 2 aka Rogue Team International
- Dead of Night
- Rot & Ruin
Basically, Ledger is all about the international save the world scenes while normal life goes.
Then zombie apocalypse happens in Dead of Night.
Fallout of the zombie apocalypse in Rot & Ruin.
Dead of Night has okay to great writing. It's one of the few series where you HAVE to read the short story/novellas. Otherwise you miss big things.
Rot & Ruin - MC is SUCH a crap teen in book #1 that I couldn't stand him but the story was good. Then it got even better. I personally think it was well written because Ledger is still around and kicking. lol Just not as the main character.
Joe Ledger:I'm on Deep Silence #10. I forgot how much happened in this book. ALSO, tons of little foreshadowing for what may happen in the sequel series, Rogue Team International.
Getting closer to the part where I'm gonna wanna cry in this book. *doom music*
Joe Ledger #3 - I'm in Ch 12. Where the heck does Maberry get his ideas? The guy in prison is creeping me out. I really should read his author bio :)
Maberry also likes to give a fairly detailed backstory to characters he's going to kill on the next page, lol...
Joe Ledger: Prison GuyHe is the CREEPIEST bad guy in the WHOLE series! Also, pretty interesting.
I see-saw on whether or not I want to know more about Church. I finished #10 and there were a few snippets in it that hint at Church's past. Ok ok! I want more! I wanna know more! lol
Maberry does a decent job at making a stance for why a "normal" person may turn evil or how a bad guy can be 90% likable except for the fact he likes to cause chaos for the sake of chaos & money.
I like Church's mystery. I would both like to hear more and also keep him mysterious if that's possible.
I am up to Ch 13 in Joe Ledger #3... You guys are not kidding - that prisoner is creepy as hell! And why do all those people react to him like that???
Only 35% in and all this terror of the book is almost too much together with the suspense of the election... I want the bad guys horribly murdered so badly, I can taste it!
You don't hate all of them though do ya? I totally felt sorry for some of them. Maberry does a nice job of showing how 'relatable' to 'completely alien' the bad guys can be.
Soo wrote: "You don't hate all of them though do ya? I totally felt sorry for some of them. Maberry does a nice job of showing how 'relatable' to 'completely alien' the bad guys can be."You are right, I don't hate them. I just feel as if I am threatened myself, those (view spoiler)
Well, I just finished Joe Ledger #3 and it was soooo good! I was happy for picking up on some things really early, but now we have so many more scary possibilities left out there! This is one scary as hell world and Nicodemus is one of the creepiest scary ones of all. (view spoiler)Also, if you had the awesome choice between Ghost and Mouse, which dog would you guys prefer? I love them both, but I think I am going with Mouse...

I've slacked off my reading. Need to pump that into high gear so I can get several Audible Escape books done before the end of the month.
Anyone else reading something Halloweeny?
I got a Surface Pro 7 on sale and been trying to play with it to see how useful the writing bit will be. It's kind of annoying because it's not really a laptop or a tablet.
Microsoft did a good job with the touch interface & pen but it doesn't look like anyone is making good apps that you can find on Android but not on MS. Even Netflix interface is different. Like it doesn't have the upgraded features of making it play faster, etc.
I'm been doodling and working on my writing on the tablet. That's been more fun than I expected. Also, my handwriting is totally fugly compared to what it used to be. Working on it. lol
