RETIRED THREAD: Vagabond Treehouse Book Club
House of Leaves is only scary if you believe the false narrative... that the book/story is real and was passed between artists in the 90s or whatever... or think about what if it was real, too much, basically...
the IDEA of an infinite dark labyrinth hiding in the walls of your house... then I guess some of the visual text things the book does could maybe even make you claustrophobic...
I think it will be interesting to see what people think of these random megaspoilers :D
I remember how much thought we put into the mysteries and codes hidden throughout the book...

Ya'll think I can read 1000 books by the end of the year? One time life achievement? *ponder*Think I can do it? Hahahah =D
I think I'm on 796 Books Read right now. I can't even believe that. Goes to show you can do crazy stuff when you can't do the usual mix of stuff.
Gotta get creative right? When life throws you lemons or basically puts you in an invisible cage, ya gotta keep challenging & entertaining yourself. =D
Going by the Tracker:
- I was still trying to do outdoors stuff until end of March. So, I got a good chunk read before I decided to shelter in place with more strict measures for myself. My immune system sucks and I can't afford to get COVID19.
- April to June: I did a lot more dual reading & listening. Ended up reading several rough series with interesting concepts or one part done well enough for me to read the whole thing. Sometimes, it seems like I torture myself. Bwahahahha!
- Starting watching shows in July & did a lot of that in September. That slowed me down to normal-ish reading rate. Less dual R+L. Lowest count was in September with 50 books & most of that was in the later part of the month.
I can TOTALLY read 200 books in 3 months. Maybe I'll go for 1001 as my goal. If I meet that, I'll up it to 1111. Symmetry. lol
Highly doubtful that I can do 1111.
I want to read Cradle - for me it will be the first time. Just say when! I finished Dresden 3 and am on Dresden #4 - The Summer Knight ... I am not sure, but I have a feeling we are going some Fae ways here... And yes, they are not human at all, no matter how much they look like a hot version of us:):):)

If anyone can do it, YOU CAN!!!! I will cheer you on:):):)

I am hooked on Dresden. I am on book 13, Ghost Story. Not sure why I waited so long to get to these. Bob is an amazing character!!
Thanks, Choko! I just wrapped up my Crade re-read and chomped on the new one. I'll be here to chat if you want to. It's a zany series! Bob is hilarious. Raunchy spirit. Did you notice that (view spoiler)

I did. Another character I really like is Butters, the coroner. He cracks me up and is always so loyal to his friends.
Hints about Bob is there before he goes into Butter's care. =) That name. Butters. lol I like how there are normal to odd names in the series.
@Choko and all - I'd like to do a Cradle read too, though not this year. Would you all be up for something maybe in January?
I'll do a re-read with ya'll next year.Apparently Haunting of Bly House is on Netflix and I may have to go watch that. =)

I am binging it too! I am on #5 right now, Death Mask... I love Bob!!! And Mister! THey are my favorite!!!
For book #4, I was sooo sad when (view spoiler)
Now I am up to Ch.15 in #5, and I know I am a complete romantic sap, but I did wish (view spoiler)

OMG!!! How could I have forgotten Toot-toot!!! He is fabulous ❤️!!! Yes, he is the best, hands down!
Now I HAVE TO order pizza for supper! At least I will not have to cook and it will go great with the NBA final game (✷‿✷)
Toot-toot just gets better and better with each book... it's kinda crazy to see outsider perspectives on Harry's growing pixie army, really...
Last night, I relaxed by watching a few episodes of the Good Place. It's still funny. =)Then I started on the Haunting of Bly Manor. The acting is not as good as the Haunting of Hill House but the spooky started from the get go.
I finished Dresden #5. Probably the best as far as how it was structured so far. It seems like he is getting better at writing with every book. I am actually starting to care about Dresden and that is a big step when I reach this level of intimacy with a character. It means that I start becoming a fan, thus discarding all objectivity and starting to just love being in the world of the books no matter what.
Started Dresden #6 - Blood Rights.About half way through. I am a bit frustrated with Harry! (view spoiler)
Anyone watch the show Evil yet? It's on Netflix. I like it! It's my current binge show. Ignore the Netflix blurb and watch Ep1. =)I think it's better than Haunting of Bly Manor for spook/creep factor.
I watched the whole season in a day, last week... now I have to wait for season 2 to come, probably late because of 2020...
The show is great for the ambiguity of it all... altho after the first couple episodes, it definitely starts veering towards some/most being real...

Still on Dresden #6... Towards the end... I am even more annoyed with Harry, because he doesn't always stop to think things through, but reacts on impulse... Usually he has good instincts, but he can be also very dense... And he wants people to not judge him, but he is quick to judge and jump to conclusions... I want to shake him sometimes!!!
Evil: I watched it all and I cannot believe that ending! I mean, I can but that was a freaking terrible teaser to end on! I hope S2 is on time. =)
Lots of atmosphere & ambiguous deals. Ben is awesome and comes across as really down to Earth & smart. I liked the various connections and all. Kristen is mostly great. I like the way she tackles situations on her own but that also lands in her trouble. I think it's still weird on how the deal with David. (view spoiler) Can't wait for Season 2!
Dresden:
Eh, it's hard to not be judgey about people if you are always in the spotlight (regardless of validity) and assumed to be guilty even if proven to be innocent.
For me, part of the charm about Harry is that he's a secret optimist. So secret, even he doesn't realize it and he truly hopes for the best of people and events. It's like he has a child like hope that hasn't been smothered by all the danger & trauma he has faced.
I had to do some googling to see if that was supposed to be the end, or coronavirus cut the season short... cause there were a ton of loose ends and rush plots towards the end... like Jake the Flake stuff...
I'm a pretty big Aasif Mandvi fan, from Daily Show and other things I've seen him pop up in... similar with Jason Mantzoukas, altho his roles are more manic...

Jason does a great bad guy. I hope he doesn't stay typecast into it. He does normal to evil really well. Due to life being more challenging in some aspects, I started watching another show while working on pc troubleshooting/setup stuff.
October Faction is way better than I thought it would be. The blurbs on Netflix are truly bad. lol
It's too bad there won't be another season for OF. Good actors, lots of great classic spook stuff and I like the mix of languages. Though, I keep rolling my eyes a bit at the subtitled translation of Japanese vs what's being said. The whole translate slang or not deal.
To be honest, I'd love more good old, action like Old Guard. I may have to re-watch Ip Man movies and finally watch the last one. I haven't seen the finale or the other spin offs yet.
Between Haunting of Bly Manor, Evil and October Faction, I feel like I have a nice "halloweeny" spree with the shows.

I'm a fan of Michael Emerson from Lost and Person of Interest... his face on Netflix was half the reason I tried the show...
I first learned of Jason from his movie podcast with Paul Scheer and June Diane Raphael...
Dubbed text is the worst... I've been trying to watch Money Heist, and the english dialogue and CC options don't match, no matter which CC/language option you choose...
Haven't tried October Faction... been at a bit of loose ends... started watching How to Get Away With Murder again... picked up halfway through season 2... seems close to where I left off...

What are you in the mood for? The Good Place was good for smart but funny. I watched American Horror Story backwards. lol Started with last season by accident and just went with it. October Faction is gritty, serious and lots of Men in Black shooting. I'm getting into the deeper conspiracies of the show now. Looks good.

October Facti..."
I've mostly been trailing you... I watched 2.5 seasons of The Good Place early this year... I paused mostly because of the awkward comedy focus of season 3...
AHS, I think I'm at the start of season 4 when I decide to return
October Faction sounds interesting
I finished all of season 2 of HTGAWM yesterday, and started season 3...

Lots of drama and crazy twists in HTGAWM. Some of it totally ticks me off but it's mostly good writing I think. =)
yea... sometimes you just shake your head at the latest twist
The show did a really good job with the supercuts and ominous musical scores, tho... you know something's coming when that happens...
the rapid flashbacks to remind viewers of storylines reminds me of the photos on Scandal around commercial breaks...

Ha I totally mistook one of the names for something else. Michael Emerson is the one I was talking about for playing great bad guys and hope he doesn't get typecast. Though I guess that is already happening.
In Evil:
I was surprised by how easily Kristen's mom is swayed to do crappy things. But I guess she's like a rebel so that makes sense?
I dunno why Kristen's mom went bad so fast... but I wasn't too too surprised by the actress... she was a baddie on Blacklist, too...
I think Emerson has done a fair job of going back and forth in his roles... Finch was generally good on Person of Interest... or on a redemption arc, anyway, since before the pilot...
I tried to give October Faction a go today, wasn't in the mood for it... also read that it was cancelled, along with V-Wars, in April...
Actually started Halt and Catch Fire, instead... period piece about computer wars in the 80s... Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies) and MacKenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate) and some unknowns...

Ya know, I never finished Person of Interest. I should do that at some point. I tried to get caught up on Blacklist but I'm having issues with the way the plot is changing.
October Faction ended well. Lots of questions I would have liked answers and the show may get picked up by another company. I do think they rushed the last few episodes to "end" it all.
I think I'll watch Pandora (K Movie).
I loved Person of Interest... I agree Blacklist goes all over the place... even in season 3 when Liz was a fugitive... I think I made it to early season 4, in the past year...
Blacklist: I'm somewhere in S6 and it's really weird. Like, I can go along with Liz not liking Reddington and all that but there's a couple of other plot lines and actions that are happening that go into WTH town. lol
Hm, I had to ditch Pandora because I can't just sit and watch it right now. It'll have to be a watch before bed movie. =)

no... just had that song on the brain the past week or 2, as like a reaction...
I haven't watched many non-action movies, lately

*strikes a goofy pose* I am going to make a valiant effort to read as many Audible Escape/Romance books before the end of the month!
Hopefully, this will not drive me nuts because there's a lot of crap in AE. lol
Trying to read the ones I already had downloaded. Since the books may not be available on Plus, I should try & read these while I can. I did pay for the "extra" service.
Just finished Dresden#8... Goodness gracious! Molly! And when the hell is Harry going to hook up with Murphy already?!?!? They are made for each other! And I wonder what Tomas is actually doing for work...
Keep going and you'll get answers! Also, yah! Karrin + Harry are totally made for each other. Got in three of my TBR books on Audible Escape. Not amazing stories but good popcorn reads. Onto #4!
I've been watching Hannibal (tv show) and realized I've watched the first season before. Boy, talk about a well done but depressing show.

Iain, House of Leaves is on the 48 Books That Scared the Bejesus Out of Readers.
This list makes me laugh. House of Leaves was more of a brain twister than a horror.
I'm going to check out the Halloween horror recs. Maybe get a new book to read for Spooky atmosphere.
