I thought Warrior Nun was a Portuguese actress, too... weird decision...

message 552: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments She has an American accent except for some of the internal monologue. All of the different people have a weird range of accents. It's weird.

Also, Cruella the Nun? Heh

message 553: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12606 comments I am in for that read!

message 554: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yay! =)

message 555: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Anyone watched Locke & Key? It's different from the audio adaptation & (the little) of the comic I read but it's pretty good as a show! Nice mix of good actors, spooky setting & weird shit.

message 556: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments No not me. But I've been on a Lucifer binge

message 557: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I started watching Lucifer too! I'm in Season 5. Love the actor but the story line has gotten even stranger. lol

message 558: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments You guys need to watch the Order on Netflix. I'm torn between watching that one and Locke & Key right now.

The blurb for the Order is cheesy as can be but the actual show is a bit like watching a mix of the Grimm & Supernatural.

message 559: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments Haven't seen it Soo. I like Colony and Supernatural though.

message 560: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I've decided that the Order is like a wacko mashup of the shows Grimm, Supernatural & Buffy. lol

It's been fun to watch at 1.25x speed. So the 45 min episodes are like 35 min halfies.

message 561: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments The Order:

There are a few elements that make me snicker, roll my eyes and yell at the screen but I like it! You guys need to put the Order on your to watch list. I wanna talk about some of the events. Be fun to chat, laugh and discuss!

Haven't finished the 1st Eddie Lacrosse, yet

I liked the TV-esque setup, with a small job to show you the character, then jumping into the main plot...

Some early elements reminded me of characters from GoT season 1... then things started getting weird/crazy, and I was having mild Queen's Thief flashbacks... then things got really weird around where I paused, when (view spoiler)

I'll go back and finish later today, been jumping between several other books for the Mystery Club and what I wanted to listen to at work (finally started my push to continue Malazan from the start)...

message 563: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I think forcing yourself to read Malazan is a book reading spree killer. lol

Though, I definitely appreciated Malazan more after reading a poorly written story. Heh

Eddie LaCrosse has a weird vibe that's pretty great. Nice twists to well known tropes and fables.

message 564: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36357 comments Mod
I'm not so much forcing... been meaning to all year... I just was doing a ton of other tomes then

This is actually my 3rd time reading the 1st book... read books 2-3 before and a couple of the weirdo novellas... doing it on my own time this time, instead of scheduled BRs... should be less constricting... unless it grates on me, I hope to finish this time...

message 565: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I'm on the last stretches for Malazan. In the beginning, since Erickson doesn't explain much, it seems like there's nonstop stuff happening and you're busy figuring out why stuff is happening. Now that I understand what's going on, I don't think the plot is as complicated as it appeared. The lack of knowledge is what made it seem so obtuse. The salient points are kinda simple and that's a spin I didn't think would happen.

So, that's interesting to me. I plan on finishing this year and calling it done, woo!

message 566: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments I got to book 3 in Malazan and had to take a break. TL is right that doing them in BRs was difficult, at least for me. Super complex but interesting. I will probably have to start over to remember everything

message 567: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I decided Malazan BRs won't work for me because I didn't enjoy talking about the books with online assistance. A lot of people read spoilers about the characters and plot lines in order to "get" what is happening. That would ruin the experience for me.

Not sure if this will be a series I will want to re-read when I finish. On one hand, I know the re-reads are good due to understanding more with each book you read. Context for characters, actions & events changes. I did enjoy that factor when I re-read the first couple of books this year.

On the other hand, I don't think I will be a fan of Erickson's writing style even when I finish the series and that's a big part of the reason why I probably won't re-read it. lol

Some of the characters have grown on me but most of them are basically a different version of _____. That's obvious to see once you get to the midpoint of the series. Basically, the "complexity" of the series is going away as I piece together what's going on and I think I'll be happy with whatever I figure out by the end of this run.

Gotta love something about the series to want to revisit it. I don't have that click for me in Malazan.

message 568: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Season 2 of the Order was shorter than S1! That kinda made me sad. I hope there will be a S3.

I think S2 made less sense because it wasn't a full run of 15+ episodes. Overall, decent story line, different take of werewolves & witches. Really, the setup for the Order is definitely a fancy pants Witchdom but with an academic bent of secret societies that groom future leaders & shakers for the world.

message 569: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36357 comments Mod
Maybe Malazan will be something I consider revisiting in 10-15 years, like I've recently done with WoT

message 570: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36357 comments Mod
Even having only read 3 books and the first 3x, the books become so much easier on re-read, just having vague understandings of the connections and goings-on... it's the deep-endness of that first readthrough that's rough... I listen at 2x now, close to normal...

message 571: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12606 comments I am always willing to read Malazan with anyone!

I watched 5 minutes of the first episode of The Order some time ago, probably when it first came out... didn't pull me in fast enough, or something...

I gave it a second shot today, and well into the second episode already, when I should be asleep...

After the first 5-10 minutes, it really pulled me in... the show is so weird... the MC is an unexpected MC... that roommate is so weird...

Really reminds me of college... NOT...

message 573: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments The Order:

lol - It's good right? Cool mix of weird stuff!

Malazan:

I wonder if I'll want to re-read the whole thing once I finish. Like I said, I enjoyed re-reading the first few books but not sure if I'll feel the same once I finish. =)

message 574: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12606 comments I actually loooooove Stevenson's prose! It is very self-indulgent at times but it does something for me, I can't explain it... There are authors that are extra-special to my senses and he is one of those... It is weird, because as much as I absolutely love Sanderson, his storytelling is what makes me love him, but I am not enchanted with his prose... And the opposite is true for Gail C. - I love the melody of her prose, but she is very hit and miss with the stories... You know how I am, as long as one of those things is present, I am good ʘ‿ʘ

message 575: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Really? What about Erickson's prose do you enjoy?

The things I admire about his writing is more about the way he planned out the story vs the way he writes it. I like some of his humor but it's mostly dark & only funny in context sometimes. I don't think of it as funny when I'm remembering the scene vs when I am listening to it during the story.

Characterization wise, he has a handful of archetypes and all of them are a variation of them vs really unique.

I really do wanna know what you love about his writing. It'll be cool to hear your perspective.

Most people just say they really like it and can't explain why.

In only see 2 season of 10 episodes of The Order on netflix list... and both seasons are 5x 2-part episodes, based on the titles... am I wrong?

I can see some of the Grimm/Supernatural/Buffy aspects... but what the show really reminds me of, is the magic school part of Sabrina, and the weirdness of Hemlock Grove (only watched most of the first season, I think)...

And I'm thru episode 3 and part of episode 4 now, and that RA of Jack's (view spoiler)

message 578: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments The Order:
Sorry! I mixed it up. Too many different shows. lol

Both seasons have 10 episodes. I did think S2 was a little weird because of the way the plot went but it was still good. Hopefully, S3 will be green lighted and made. Though there are zero news about it.

The Ethics professor is awesome! I wish he wasn't killed off so soon.

Yeah! Though I think the school aspect is more like Harry Potter adult version and bizareness of Sabrina/Hemlock.

V Wars is messing with my head because Vampire Diaries. Lots of similar actors.

Timelord Iain | 36357 comments Mod
I saw Ian Somerholder was in V Wars...

I kinda petered out on TVD/etc... I think I watched 5-6 seasons of TVD, and 2-3 of Originals... both lasted about 2 more seasons, I think, and now there's Legacies... it's funny how Alaric left the show for that cult show, and then was resurrected on Originals/TVD, and now is one of the few original cast members lingering around...

I honestly shouldn't find The Order as hilarious as I do... I don't think... cause it's just stupid half the time...

And these werewolves are ready for Jack to die so they can go back to normal, like every 5 minutes...

message 581: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Nah, you should find the Order to be funny cause it is. In general, I think it's a nice blend of serious & splashes of comedy. I find the show to be sneaky cause it will have a cool layer at unexpected moments.

message 585: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments LOL but it's FUN!

I finished V-Wars. Now I'm tempted to read the short story collection. It's by Jonathan Maberry. Wondering if there will be a S2.

Though, I think the Order was more fun to watch than V-Wars. V-Wars was predictable. If the show continues, Ian S. will be kicking butt!

I wonder if I am the only person that will connect pull ups with Arrow? lol

What's that deal called when you can leverage the bar up on the hooks up or down? That has to be so much work! Control & release. Maybe one day goals? lol

message 586: by Soo (last edited Sep 15, 2020 02:49PM) (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Aw, poo! Netflix canceled V-Wars. That's too bad. I'm guessing the war for the rights to stream stuff has gotten fierce! Everyone's into it now.

Google Search:

I noticed that you can now click to see where you can "Watch" a show/movie. It gives a list of options. Most of the options end up being paid services: Hulu, Yahoo, Amazon, etc.

One of the Amazon Prime perks used to be worth it for the movie/series access. If Amazon got the rights to stream a movie/series as the primary source, I would expect that to be included in Prime membership. NOPE! You gotta pay for the episodes/movie or package deal that lets you watch. Such a ripoff.

I mean, you get some movies/shows as a Prime Member but it's not the way it used to be.

Timelord Iain | 36357 comments Mod
Ouch on streaming availability... IMDB also stream some stuff, like Leverage, but their player kinda sucks and their subtitles seem to easily get messed up and start showing dialogue from the wrong episode...

I know what you mean about the mobile bar thing exercise, but it's such a complicated thing to try and search for...

Usually it takes a show longer to go off the rails... this first season finale is pretty crazy... everyone knows everything...

That last photo of Pops in the Necrophone case was hilarious...

Hard to imagine what the second season is going to be like, and I think you said that plot is even crazier...

message 595: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments S2: That first episode is a head trip! Right?!!? I was like, What IS GOING ON???

Jack looked great at a blonde and I just kinda wanted to claw B*tchface girl every time she did the mem wipe and said stuff like, "You love cheer squad and me." hahahah

I did watch most of the Good Place. I think I didn't catch the finale. Is it still on Netflix? It's kinda weird what stays on there and what doesn't.

message 596: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I haven't watched Dark. Currently watching I-Land on 1.5x speed. So it's more like 30min episodes. Plus, it's cool to see what parts still look like normal time and which parts look sped up. Screwing with my mind. =D lol

I think Good Place is on there...

I was just cruising along, watching The Order, and now I got a headache cause I went outside for a second and found a notice on my door, due to a clerical error with my landlord...

They don't think I paid my rent this month, and I have 5 days to comply... they cashed the rent check on the 2nd... but I can't resolve until tomorrow...

I know I shouldn't stress about it, but here I am...

message 598: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments You got the notice and you'll take care of it when the sun's up. No problems. You'll be fine.

message 599: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Okay. If you haven't seen it, you guys need to see Old Guard on Netflix. It kept coming up as a recommendation and I was like, whatever. Because the way Netflix links stuff together now is really weird.

Movie was awesome! I loved the story, characters and action. Ahh. It made me really happy. I have the comic for Old Guard Vol1. I need to find it and read it. =)
