April 11, 2020 through June 9, 2020
8 Week Dash For the Win!

Challenge Dates:
Signups open until April 11, 2020 at 9 PM US EDT.
Remaining Teams Assigned after signups close on April 11, 2020.
First Task Assigned April 14, 2020 at 6 PM US EDT.
Challenge Ends on June 9, 2020 at Midnight US EDT, tasks will not be accepted after this time.

Each team will work together to complete tasks. Once complete, you will be given another task to complete. After the first task, teams will be on different paths with tasks randomly assigned. The same tasks may be assigned to different teams at different times, but no task will be used more than once by the same team. Each team works at their own pace and the team that completes the most tasks at the end of 8 weeks will be the winner!

After the first task is given to everyone, when a team finishes their task they will need to report their completion in the Tracking/Q&A thread. I will confirm the completion and assign their next task. New tasks will not be assigned more frequently than every other day. I will attempt to respond quickly to confirm completion and assign new tasks, but please allow up to 24 hours. If I am unavailable, another mod will assign the task.

Each teammate will need to participate in each task, but may take a pass for one task during the course of the challenge. For some tasks, no passes will be allowed. Completions posts will need to be made when finishing each book for a task, similar to the PtP and Bachelor Challenges. A player will be removed if they make no comment for 5 days after a new task is assigned or 3 days after the rest of the team completes the task (whichever is later), despite attempts to make contact.

There is a 150 page minimum for books, rereads and audios ok. Books may only be used once per player during the challenge. Players may read the same book for a task unless otherwise specified. Books do not have to be romance, but must be fiction.

**For this challenge, use the GR Kindle first edition page count if available. Ebook page count will be acceptable if no Kindle page count available. The acceptability of other page counts will be made on an individual basis**

MountainKat | 31763 comments I think most of you know each other, at least a little, but feel free to introduce yourself again. Please give any relevant information, especially time zone as that helps know when it is best to communicate. 😊

Please select a team leader to help keep track of where your team is in any given task. And as necessary guide discussions for task decisions. Any teammate can report your completions though.

PS - If you want to be known as anything other than Team 519, you are free to come up with a team name. 😉

UnusualChild{beppy} | 1282 comments Hi, I'm beppy.

I live in northern British Columbia, in Canada, so I'm on Pacific Time.

I'll let you know that I should be able to read at least one book per task, but since I am working FT for a Health Authority doing staffing for our nurses and cleaners and food service workers, if things get busy, that's all I'll be able to read.

I read a variety of genres, with a definite focus romance and all the subgenres, including m/m.

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1573 comments Hi! I'm Becky. I live in Indianapolis, which is in Eastern. I'm hiding out at home with my mother these days, which isn't all that different from my pre-corona life, considering I'm on disability with a wonky immune system. I read a lot of m/m, some m/f, and the occasional f/f. I will sometimes pick up a mystery, fantasy, or science fiction, but the vast majority of what I read is romance.

message 8: by Madelyn (new)

Madelyn (madelynkontis) | 108 comments I'm Madelyn, Pacific Time Zone. I'm bored at home with my parents, and have about 222 unread books on my Kindle. I'm so ready to knock out some challenges!

I watched the first season or two, and even talked with a friend about applying for the show before I got sick, but I haven't watched the show in years. I think the concept will translate into a fun reading challenge!

Did everyone see that MKat is talking about giving the first task early? She's just waiting for everyone to check in on their team threads.

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1573 comments First task! Woo hoo!

OK, it looks like we all read at least some m/m, so I'm just going to throw out some names of some m/m authors I enjoy who have a good number of titles available. Let me know if any of these sound good to anyone. Or kick in other names if there's someone else you think we should all read!

Josh Lanyon
Lucy Lennox
Marie Sexton
Annabeth Albert
JL Merrow

Emeli Webb | 430 comments my suggestions are tara lain, andrew grey and jayda marx

message 14: by Becky (new)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1573 comments I've got some Tara Lain and Andrew Grey in my TBR. I'm not familiar with Jayda Marx, but it looks like she's in KU, so it would be easy to give her a try.

UnusualChild{beppy} | 1282 comments I'm good with all the authors that Becky suggested. I own a couple Tara Lain and Jayda Marx, so I'm good to go on those, too.

I also have a couple of authors to throw in to the mix for more options if they're needed.

May Archer
Eden Finley
Eli Easton
Keira Andrews
Riley Hart

Most of them are on KU, which might be good for people who have it and don't have a lot of money to buy books.
Are we going to go with majority rules? Or total consensus? Whichever, we should probably decide fairly soon.

message 16: by Becky (new)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1573 comments It's 7:30 pm here in Indianapolis right now, which means it's 4:30 pm for those on the west coast and 1:30 am in Sweden. (I think.) Our best bet might be to narrow it down to a couple of choices, and then let Emeli make the final pick tomorrow morning. It's not ideal, but with the time differences and work schedules, it could be this time tomorrow before we all get a chance to do a regular vote.

Madelyn hasn't weighed in yet, so I'm going to drop her a PM, just to be sure she knows the first task has been announced.

UnusualChild{beppy} | 1282 comments Well, I'm good with all the authors mentioned except Andrew Grey.

message 18: by Becky (new)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1573 comments UnusualChild{beppy} wrote: "Well, I'm good with all the authors mentioned except Andrew Grey."

I would have gone along if everyone else wanted Grey (I've got something of his that would work for another challenge I'm doing too), but his stuff isn't my favorite.

message 19: by Madelyn (new)

Madelyn (madelynkontis) | 108 comments It seems we're all okay with Keira Andrews. I have Beyond the Sea, A Taste of Midnight and Voyageurs if anyone needs to borrow a book

message 20: by Becky (new)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1573 comments I'm good with Keira Andrews. I'm not generally a zombie person, and it might be a little on the nose right now, all things considered. But I remember enjoying Kick at the Darkness and the sequel Fight the Tide. I've been keeping an eye out for a third book, but nothing so far.

I'm all right with Grey as an author, although he wouldn't be my first choice. I just don't own anything by him, and don't have KU.

message 22: by Madelyn (new)

Madelyn (madelynkontis) | 108 comments I don't have KU either, but I do have a lot of unread books on my Kindle. I have books by Josh Lanyon, Lucy Lennox, Annabeth Albert, JL Merrow, KJ Charles, Keira Andrews, Riley Hart, and Andrew Grey.

UnusualChild{beppy} | 1282 comments So, I took a look at other tasks that have to have a team agreement/decision, and thought that it might be better if we started talking about things now.

Sub-genre: examples: historical, contemporary, fantasy, mystery, romantic suspense, paranormal, urban fantasy, science fiction, m/m (I guess, although all of the ones prior to m/m are a sub-genre of m/m romance, so...)

book in a series: we would have to decide the series, I believe

published in the same month and year (for example, June 2018)

same sub genre with different authors (we have to decide the sub-genre)

cover colour

published in a year prior to 2018

decade of teammate's birth - pretty sure none of us want to read a book published in the 1970s (for me), so maybe someone else has a better decade to offer?

book set on the beach or mountains (we decide which)

1500 pages by same author (so like the first task, except with a page count requirement)

title starts with the same letter

country outside of the US

book from a list with over 100 romance books on it (we decide the list)

item of cover (like jewelry, dog, etc)

profession (doctor, cowboy, construction, police, dancer, etc)

published in the year one of us joined RRCC (I'm 2013)

trope

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1573 comments 1500 pages by same author (so like the first task, except with a page count requirement)

I'm thinking we should save Josh Lanyon for this one. She probably has a larger backlist than any of the other authors mentioned.

UnusualChild{beppy} | 1282 comments I'm all right with Keira Andrews (and not because I suggested her). In fact, I only thought about her because I had just started one of her books, but I can find another one I haven't read.

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1573 comments How is everyone doing? How's the reading going?

My thoughts on the tasks that require us to agree:

Sub-genre Jane asked in the Q&A thread if m/m counts. If it does, that's easy peasy. If not, contemporary or fantasy are probably the best options for me.

book in a series Forever Wilde by Lucy Lennox, #gaymers by Annabeth Albert, Bend or Break by Amy Jo Cousins. Or there's non-m/m stuff like the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews or the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. I'd be open to a lot of suggestions here. I don't sort my shelves by series, so I've got lots of series that I'm reading, but it's hard to name them off the top of my head.

published in the same month and year I can easily do any month from November 2019-April 2020, but between my TBR and KU, I can probably dig up something for any month, if someone else has a strong preference.

same sub genre with different authors (we have to decide the sub-genre) Again, m/m would be a slam dunk for us if approved, but fantasy or contemporary would be the easiest categories for me.

cover colour I can probably dig up a cover for any color. Maybe we could use a randomizer for tasks with a set number of options, if no one has a strong preference.

published in a year prior to 2018 2016 or 2017 would be best for me.

decade of teammate's birth - pretty sure none of us want to read a book published in the 1970s (for me), so maybe someone else has a better decade to offer? I'm a 70s baby, too.

book set on the beach or mountains (we decide which) Beach is probably better for me.

1500 pages by same author Josh Lanyon has a large backlist to choose from.

title starts with the same letter As long as it's not Z or X, I can probably come up with something.

country outside of the US England would probably be the easiest, but I'm open to suggestions.

book from a list with over 100 romance books on it This list has 3,000+ titles on it. The Best of Gay Romance

item of cover (like jewelry, dog, etc) Another team got this for their second task, and they used a white shirt, which should be easy enough. Jewelry or a hat would probably be pretty easy, too.

profession (doctor, cowboy, construction, police, dancer, etc) here's a giant list of Best Gay Cops/ Security Guards/P.I.'s or Best Gay Cowboys or Best Gay Athletes, but I'm open to other suggestions, too.

published in the year one of us joined RRCC I joined in 2010.

trope friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, fake relationship, marriage of convenience

Wytch Kings by Jaye McKenna

I have the first Hot Off the Ice book in my TBR, and several of the Porthkennack books. The Bluewater Bay series would work for me, too. I'd be down for SPECTR, but not all of those meet the 150 page requirement, and the new one doesn't have a page count listed anywhere yet, so we'd have to be careful with that one.

I know! I was really surprised, too. I finally settled on the next book (for me) in the Kate Daniels series. Not really what I was in the mood for, but it's drawing me in anyway.
