Michael Sullivan | 2 comments Hello All,
I just got done reading Ryan Holiday's "Stillness Is the Key" which has gotten me interested in learning about Stoicism. I ordered "How to Think Like a Roman Emperor: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius" which sounded interesting to me. Does anyone have any recommendations on the history of Stoicism or exploring specific philosophers? Appreciate any help.
Thanks!
Mike

Now available:

My name is William Ferraiolo, I am a Philosophy Professor and author, and my new book of essays about Stoicism and Philosophy of Religion is now available from John Hunt Publishing: 👍

Excerpt:
“Since they are not dispensed in tablet or capsule form, Stoic anxiolytics remain available without prescription and exhibit an extraordinarily benign side effect profile. They rarely cause weight gain, sexual dysfunction, or uncontrollable movements of the limbs. Physiological dependence is relatively uncommon – and not especially pernicious. Instead, Stoicism offers rationally grounded, proven psychological techniques for the gradual development of consistent self-mastery and emotional detachment from those elements of the human condition that tend to cause the most pervasive and unsettling forms of fear, anxiety, and avoidable disquiet.”

John MacIntyre (johnmacintyre) | 1 comments If you're new to Stocism, then I'd recommend
+ A Guide to the Good Life by William Irvine (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5... )
+ The Art of Living by Sharon Lebell (this is a modern interpretation of the Epictetus' Enchiridian/Handbook) It's a very easy read. (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... )
+ How to Be a Stoic by Massimo Pigliucci (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... )

If you want to get into the lives of the stoics, there's
+ Plutarch's Lives, which is a collection of biographies from antiquity. Personally, I haven't read this, but everybody references it, so it's probably worth a go. (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... )
+ Lives of the Stoics by Ryan Holiday, to be released in September. Personally, I'd wait for this (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/bo... )

And there's always The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... )

And The Daily Stoic podcast (https://dailystoic.com/podcast/ ) and Massimo Pigliucci's podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast... ) both of which are amazing and only minutes a day.

Ram Tobolski | 2 comments Hi. For a relatively short, yet detailed, readable and authoritative introduction to the history, theory and practice of Stoicism, I recommend
"Stoicism: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)" by Brad Inwood.

Professor Ferraiolo, what a wonderful excerpt. I am adding your book to my list and hope to read it soon. As an aside, I am VERY ANGRY because I wanted to write a book with that exact title on a similar topic. Hopefully you include lessons from Seneca to curb my temporary insanity. ;)
