SOLVED. YA (I think) story about a Japanese boy running away. Had samurai?

I think it was a YA novel, but don't take my word for it. The cover, at least for the 1st edition I *think* featured a boy on a black horse in the snow.

From what I remember, the blurb was a boy, possibly royalty, making an escape or running away from a rival samurai family or a battle. I think he had to survive on his own in the wild and in the cities.

It may have been published in the early to mid 2000s, I was young when I found it.
