Thomas (tom471) | 984 comments I read The Lies You Wrote by Brianna Labuskes It is police procedural with a FBI forensic linguist as the main character. I recommend it. my 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Jenyfer L Johnson | 15 comments I just finished Murder at an Irish Wedding by Carlene O’Connor and started her next book, Murder in an Irish Churchyard. Nice cozy little mysteries…not gory or violent, not wandering off into romance, just enough character development that adds to the book.
I picked up The Retreat by Sarah Pearse and The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton at the bookstore. They sounded interesting!

Thomas (tom471) | 984 comments I read Death Writes by Andrea Carter It is an Irish cozy mystery and book 6 in a series that can be read as stand alones, but I have been reading them in order. There are ongoing events in Ben O'Keeffe's personal life that are better understood if read in order. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I've heard of Carlene O'Connor but never read her books, I'll have to pick up one and try it out. Meanwhile, I have read Stuart Turton's The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle and really enjoyed it, as with The Devil and the Dark Water. I gave both four stars.

Right now, I've returned to a classic mystery — Pietr the Latvian by Georges Simenon. Its the first in the long running series and I did see the British ITV Maigret series starring Rowan Atkinson, so there is a bit of a disconnect with how Simenon viewed his protagonist and how I visualize him from the TV series.

Helen (helenfrominyocounty) | 10 comments Good for you, Pamela. Love the Maigret books. What a great world Simenon created. Especially enjoy when Maigret "consults" Madame Maigret, which he does in many of the books. She's a wonderful character.

message 756: by Joan (new)

Joan (xstitchfan) | 84 comments I have been slowly reading the Maigret books in order. I’ve read through book #9. I love Simenon’s writing. He immerses you into the setting of each mystery. I learn about lives and careers that I hadno knowledge - with a nice mystery included! I highly recommend if you are the least bit interested.

JenniferAustin (austinrh) I am reading The Milliner's Hat Mystery: An Inspector Richardson Mystery by Basil Thomson!

It was Ian Fleming's inspiration for the real-life Operation Mincemeat. Per Martin Edwards's introduction, there's an additional possible connection to Fleming. Basil Thompson inscribed copies of at least two of his mysteries to a woman named Kathleen Pettigrew, assistant to the director of MI6, widely regarded as the inspiration for the Moneypenny character in Fleming's Bond novels.

Edwards also notes that Basil Thomson got good reviews at the time from Dorothy L. Sayers!

Scrolling back, I am envying Pamela and Joan their Maigret journeys. My library has very few of these. I may need to try interlibrary loan.

I haven't posted in this group for ages, but just wanted to thank you Thomas for mentioning this series. I read the first one over the last couple of days and went straight on to the second one.

It's a new style of detective novel for me. I've read very many traditional English detective or murder-mystery novels. I've never read one set in the American court system. It's a very different style of novel, and I really enjoyed it.

Thanks!

Jennifer I hope you enjoyed this Inspector Richardson Mystery. I've read all eight of Thomson's Insp. Richardson works in the series and enjoyed them all. Funny though, I didn't write a review for The Milliner's Hat Mystery or A Murder is Arranged — perhaps because it was December and I had just returned from travels.

Thomas (tom471) | 984 comments I read. God Save Benedict Arnold: The True Story of America's Most Hated Man
It is an excellent biography of a man reviled as a traitor. It brings to light his now overlooked contributions to the American Revolution.

message 777: by Craftyhj (new)

Craftyhj | 51 comments I've just finished listening to The Big Four by Agatha Christie, narrated by Hugh Fraser.

I have just started Three Rivers by David Blake which is the fourth in a series of modern murder mysteries set in Norfolk on the Broads. This is an enjoyable, pacy series which can be read standalone but is perhaps best read in order to understand the back story of the detectives.

message 787: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 5 comments I just finished The Guest List by Lucy Foley. I really enjoyed it so I decided to try her The Paris Apartment. So far, for me, "The Paris Apartment" moves slower. I find the characters less likable and relatable than in "The Guest List." After I finish this, I think I'll try The Mystery of Mistletoe Hall by Benedict Brown.

message 792: by Werner (new)

Werner | 257 comments As a kid, although I was something of a fan of the Hardy Boys mystery series, I never discovered the Nancy Drew books, and only heard about them much later. I've often regretted that, and have been curious enough to have had The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene The Secret of the Old Clock (1930), the series opener, on my to-read shelf for some time. Having time to work in one more short book before the end of the year, I decided to finally give it a read! :-)

Tiziana | 199 comments Finished yesterday a touching Christmas fiction novella ( from JAYNE SINCLAIRE GENEALOGICAL MYSTERY SERIES) about a real event, which happened at the front on Christmas Day 1914.
Not really a crime mystery, the mystery to solve is about past events and life of people in the past, anyway an enjoyable read.
