It is not :cIt was set in a fantasy world and the boy was mostly solo for part of it when he escaped.
When did you read it?How old was the boy, teenager or younger child?

Everyone in the world the book takes place in is assigned a rank, from 1 to 5 where 5 is the highest, I believe diviners assign them. People with high ranks gain access to good and prestigious jobs while people with low ranks such as 1 and 2 were assigned to labor and other 'low' jobs.
The boy the book is about however is assigned "0", the first one to get that rank for a very long time. He is sentenced to death, something seen as fitting for someone of that rank. He narrowly escapes the castle where children are ranked and runs away. The boy makes it to a small town and must evade law enforcement. I believe he managed to hide on the upper level of an inn who accepted/didn't know what the boy was.

(view spoiler)[ I do forget the events leading up to the next point, but the boy finally makes it a temple-esque area on a beautiful spot of land I believe either in the mountains or somewhere up high and hard to reach. It is revealed the "zeroes" are special in that they are not limited by certain effects. And honestly, they may have been able to learn magic but I can't remember. But I remember that the boy is basically the only person able to enter a tower to slay a trapped dragon who was corrupting people or sending doom or something like that, dragon needed to die alright? (hide spoiler)]
Overall I remember finding the book very interesting.
