SOLVED. Novel about an Indian girl, name starts with S. [s]

Hello, I'm trying to find the name of a book, I read it in 2004 for a 7th grade English class, so the book was written sometime before or during 2004. I believe the book was about an Indian young girl, but it's possible she was Muslim or from a similar Eastern country that I can't remember specifically. I'm also fairly certain the girl's name starts with an S (could end in a U?) and that is the title of the book. I can't remember a lot of specifics, though I do remember thinking it was heavy reading for a 7th grader, and I believe the book ended with the girl giving birth. There is also one sequel/follow up book about the character.
