Yay :D Excited to start discussing and be back in the Cosmere! I've been listening to Shardcast, a podcast about the Cosmere run by the poeple who also have the Coppermind (largest wiki of the Cosmere) and it has made me super hyped for (re)reading Brandon's books!

Anni | 5066 comments Oops, I wanted to start yesterday but realized that I only bought book 2-4 at audible, I got the first book quite cheap as a CD, I have only access to my computer where I saved it tomorrow 😅 I'll transfer it to my phone then and start in the evening

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments OK, I will start tomorrow too◉‿◉

Sophia | 10 comments Hey everyone, I'm in for the Mistborn BRs as well :) I just finished Words of Radiance, so I don't think I will read that one twice in one year :D

message 55: by Kathrine (last edited Mar 30, 2020 12:03PM) (new)

Kathrine | 1249 comments I started reading a while ago but haven't touched the book (or any other book) in some days now – whoops.. But I'm about halfway through and I LOVE IT. Like, a lot xD Like so much more than Era 1 of Mistborn, which I found pretty good but nothing mind-blowing. I think part of the reason I had a hard time with Era 1 was that I just didn't connect with the characters – they felt like very stereotypical-medieval-fantasy-book-people. Wax and Wayne are much more interesting to me and I think a part of that might be their age? In recent years I've been noticing that I seem to gravitate from liking young-ish characters (teens and young adults) to being more intrigued by older characters (another Cosmere example is Dalinar *cough* or should I say Daddy-nar? *cough* I'm so sorry hahahaha I've been up since 4:30). My physical age may only be 20 but my soul has apparently aged a lot in recent years – must be the terrible economy and dire environment situation 🤔

Anyway super stoked to start discussing with y'all – hope everyone stays safe (and at home, of course!) <3

message 57: by Anni (new) - rated it 4 stars

Anni | 5066 comments I started, but only read the prologue so far, I will listen to a few more minutes before going to sllep, but I am afraid I'm too tired to make much progress.

Still I'm sooo happy to be back (it's a re-read for me) and the characters immediately made me smile :)

Haha, great summary and I laughed wholeheartedly about your oh-so-old soul, be careful that you don't get all sound and sensible all of a sudden as well 😂

But I agree, I really like that the main characters are a bit older and that there's less angst and drama. I think one of my favorite tropes is a great friendship between characters (like Hadrian & Royce or Locke & Jean) and I think we have the same here :)

Aww thank you for the warm welcome :) Yes, its my first time reading all those Sanderson books. I really loved WoR (maybe slightly less than the Way of Kings). I always find myself shying away from these huge books at first and needing time to convince myself to start and then I finish them within 2 weeks 😅

I also just listened to the Prologue so far, I hope I can get in some more audiobook time today. I usually listen to my audiobooks on the way to work, but since I've been working from home for the past 2,5 weeks… and the way from the bathroom to my desk isn't that far… But I'm really excited to get to know Wax and Wayne :)

Sophia | 10 comments So, I'm somewhere in the 3rd chapter now and I would loooove for Tillaume to brew me some tee :D

Oh God, we can't have that! 😂

Agree about the friendship thing! You can really tell how much Wax and Wayne love each other. It's that kind of relationship where you know each other so well that you basically become like siblings with all that entails: knowing each other's strengths and struggles, what makes you happy or mad, both laughing and sighing of your jokes, teasing each other but of course always having each other's back. I love that kind of friendship <3

Yay glad to hear you're enjoying them! I started out with Way of Kings as my first Sanderson book which I think was pretty insane in hindsight given the massive pagecount and immense world-building – I was lucky to be quickly swept up in the story otherwise I feel like it's a book that can very easily exhaust you xD

Oh definitely! And the swears they use also tell a lot. I love they way Brandon tells us so much without actually using any exposition – but I guess I kinda want maybe a bit exposition hahaha xD

I must confess I'm kinda blanking on that one, but I'm sure if I leaf through my era 1 books it'll come back real quickly – so much of my Cosmere knowledge is from Stormlight and Roshar, I guess that means I'm probably due for a reread of Era 1 soon xD

I started my Sanderson re-read, today...

I read The Eleventh Metal, from Arcanum Unbound, then moved right into Final Empire...

Eleventh Metal just shows Kelsier learning to be a Mistborn, prior to the events of the first trilogy, but I like the short scenes... I also love the first Mistborn book the most, out of the first trilogy, whenever I re-read... the ending is just packed with meaningful moments for the rest of the Mistborn books, and the Cosmere in general...

(I think I discussed all that vaguely enough to not need spoiler tags)...

Re: Kelsier (for people who have read all 6 books & Secret Histories): (view spoiler)

I'm glad, that in recent years, Sanderson has started acknowledging that he needs to start focusing on the main Cosmere books, and less on possible side projects, if he's going to finish the main storyline in his lifetime... like we've discussed in many threads, barring delays, we're already looking at around 2040-2050 for the whole thing to end...

This is very much a light and fun, relatively standalone, book... Sanderson wrote this when he needed a break from Stormlight Archive 2, I think... he didn't plan a Weird Western cycle of Mistborn... it wasn't until later, and fan love, that he tacked on a connected trilogy with a bigger story (and the story gets darker in books 2-3)... it's also why this cycle has 4 books and not 3...

Sanderson puts a lot of thought into his magic systems... I'm not sure how much is explained in the story, but you get a fair amount of info from the Ars Arcanum at the end (glossary of magic stuff)... that info is also on the wiki, and expanded on from interview answers...

If I remember correctly, the magic development in Era 2 builds off of the Lord Ruler stuff in Era 1 (view spoiler)

I started typing misinformation there, and corrected it a bit with the wiki... doesn't take long for the details to start to fuzz :)

I skipped (view spoiler), since (view spoiler) is in every book in every series... that's kind of the point...

Sanderson has talked in interviews about how he had the idea of (view spoiler) before he had the idea of the Cosmere... I think he said, he would add a character like (view spoiler) to stories he read, creating a through-thread... a worldhopper from the get-go :)

It's so daunting to think that we're only (and perhaps not even) a third of the way through the cosmere, and he's published 12 books so far. This is such a huge undertaking and I have so much respect for his eternal dedication to the fandom and his transparency with his progress. It makes it very easy to be a fan of him when he's constantly sharing updates and tidbits of what's to come.

But agree, it's good that he's aware of how massive this thing is, and that he's being realistic about the timeline. It's kinda terrifying to think that I might be +50 years old when this thing finishes... xD

I said the same thing to myself when I started listening last year but now I'm running out of episodes! xD

Yeah I think it's such an important thing in books that all kinds of people with all kinds of different challenges are represented, because it makes a huge impact for the people who experience those things in real life, both firsthand and secondhand. I can never get why some people are vehemently against accurate representation in media because it can be a life-saver for an individual in a minority to see someone like themself <3
