This also works for Reverse as I've read it.

Kate (kcbond) | 248 comments Well, I guess the positive side of now having work shut down until April 11th is that I will get a lot more reading done at home. Will be working from home some but all of our events got cancelled as well so we are mostly just long term planning. Books here I come.

You're probably going to be pulled into overtime soon? :-/

Still not quite sure what's going to happen at my work but we're at least making decent progress in getting everyone set up to work from home or come in only at specific times so as to avoid there being too many people and too much risk of contamination.

It's so weird.

message 705: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments I'm still technically employed by our local hospital so if things really hit the fan, I might be called back to work there. I suspect work will be hectic either way.

Work from home makes sense to spread the risk and at least cuts the commute and extra meetings from your day

Eldarwen | 5004 comments It is Mini Challenge Time!!

This time it's all about Perky Space Travel.

Please read up on the rules for the mini challenge HERE.

Read them carefully, it isn't that complicated. The tab will also soon be added to the spreadsheet, so you'll be able to see how things are set up.

If after reading the rules you still have questions, please don't hesitate to ask :-)

Any book finished after this countdown goes to 0 can be used for the mini challenge - as of 15th March basically but watch the countdown because of timezones.

message 707: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Oh exciting! I'll look through later and see what I've got that can fit. I'll also try to do a summary of the tricky ones to hunt out so we can work together on those.

message 708: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments As I'm definitely not going to be able to finish this today, but earliest tomorrow, Silver Silence is going to work for a few of those tasks. Alternately, it might also make an interesting title for the story.

message 709: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments An hour to go until we can start on the mini challenge!

As per UK rules I'm self isolating this week. Hopefully will mean I can read more, but that relies on toddler and husband staying well.

message 710: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Aaaand the mini challenge is a go!

Anything you finish from now on can be used for the mini challenge, so please remember to add that information in your completion posts.

And let your fellow team members know which task you're reading for if you're picking up a book specifically for one of the more difficult tasks - thank you :-)

Mmhh, it'll be difficult for health care, unfortunately. A friend of mine is a nurse and she's had her time off cancelled and has been recalled to work. Her husband has similar issues and they have two kids.

Fortunately, they've been clever here and while nurseries and day care for children are closed to the general public, they've opened some for people working in sanitation and health.

message 724: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Oh that's a good system! Would be good if they did it everywhere.

We're trying organise informal child care in our neighbourhood. There seem to be a number of childcare workers who'll be off who might be able to help those of us who are working madly.

Yes, we've just received notice that any requested vacations that have not started yet will be denied through June. It's unfortunate :( It's going to be a long few months. However, I am happy to do my part.

The Red Queen (The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels, #3; Cousins War #2) by Philippa Gregory

It has been a reading day! I'm so excited because this has been on my TBR for so long. I feel accomplished :)

Unfortunately, it was only 3 stars. The character was just so unlikeable. The narrative was also choppy.

Mini challenge:
12. Lady Margaret takes a risk by leading a rebellion to get her son Henry on the throne.
15. Lady Margaret makes it her life mission to have her son on the throne.
23. The servants prepare large feasts for the coronations and marriages throughout the story.

2 - character: Jasper Tudor
3 - character: Henry Tudor
6 - character: Lord Stanley
8 - setting: England
skip - author: Phillippa Gregory

That sucks :-/
But it's a good thing that you can look at things that way. Certainly makes life easier!

message 728: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments That's rubbish! Hope you don't get too run down with it.

I'm oddly hoping that it is corona I've got now, because then I can do my bit from here without so much worry for my health.

message 736: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Blackburn | 32 comments If no one else is reading anything for it, I’d love to read straight on till morning for a book with a ship on the cover! :) I’m also reading a book currently that can count for either stars on the cover or science fiction! I know realistically I could finish both of those by the end of the month. I will reevaluate after those two to avoid over-committing myself.

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments The Watson Brothers (Watson Brothers #1-3) by Lori Foster

I plan to read this when I finish my sports tagged book as it'll fit 'work tool on cover' with the axe.

message 739: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaaate) | 78 comments Could someone explain the mini-challenge for me? I don't understand it at all from the brief haha

message 740: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments This mini-challenge is split into two parts.

The first is to read books for a list of tasks. These are themed round getting ready for a trip into space. There's a mix of tasks from find x on the cover, tagged x and X happens in the book type searching.

The second part, which needs separate books, is to make a story including book titles that we've read.

So probably the best way to go is to let us know which tasks your books fit. If they don't fit anything, then we'll use them in the story.

Does that help?

I think so.. I don't think Room covered any tasks tbh

message 742: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments No worries. We can certainly go into a Room somewhere in the story.

Hope everyone is managing ok with the real world craziness that's going on at the moment. I'm increasingly glad that I'll be out of isolation at the end of the week and able to get back to work doing something practical to help

message 743: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Things are becoming stricter and stricter here every day because people just don't get it.

"Avoid social contact" apparently means "go out into the park with your friends who also have kids who are out of school".

So now they've closed parks and playgrounds. People are idiots and don't take it seriously.

Other than that, I'm a little on edge at times because work is being a pain, but all good! Just so tired in the evening that I barely manage to read :-(
And since I'm now taking the car to go to work, no more reading time on the bus. Audio is for the most part not my thing, and I have an old car, so no usb ;-)

message 744: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments We've been advised not to do things, but not told we can't. Given I haven't left my house/garden since Saturday, I have no idea how people are taking it.

I suspect I've got it, but the only people being tested here are those needing admission so no way to know. Currently v tired and getting out of breath doing v little. Hopefully will start to clear soon though.

No reading time on the bus is a pain. That time to relax is so important after a stressful day.

message 745: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments That could indeed be it, but if that's all you're getting, count yourself lucky! It's what they're predicting it'll be like for a lot of people and I hope that's true.

Gosh, yes, I miss that reading time as well! More the time in the morning, as it was my way to ease into the day. In the evenings, I usually just nap or chat with a friend who happens to be on the bus.

message 746: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Seeing as I have to read something more specific for another challenge and Silver Silence unfortunately doesn't fit for that task, I'm going to start reading:
The Deathless Girls by Kiran Millwood Hargrave

It could work for one of the following tasks:

8. Read a book by a new-to-you author.
9. Read a book that was first published in 2019.

There may be others but I'll only know once I'm into the book or done with it, but these two work for sure!

message 747: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Any tasks that people have said they'll read for have their names next to them on the spreadsheet now so everyone can see what is left.
