Just on the question of how to determine the age of a book, if there's known to be a significant difference between the two, I think the date it was written is more important than when it happened to be published. The former has much more of a determining influence on the book's actual characteristics than the latter does.
I agree with you, Werner, especially when the book was not published at all during the author's lifetime.
As you all know by now from Rosemarie's broadcast message, Benito Cereno by Herman Melville has won the poll, and will be our annual group read. We'll officially start the read/discussion on Sept. 1, though I'll personally probably have to start late (I'm expecting a review copy of a Goodreads author friend's newest novel in today's mail). But I'm very much looking forward to this one!

After reading reviews, it's a book I will not be reading, since To Kill a Mockingbird was so good.
