Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I was working on a couple of audiobooks today.

"Paycheck" from Minority Report and Other Stories because it was Dick's birthday, and A Christmas Carol because the second half of Paycheck was messed up. Oh, and Tim Curry.

My daughter says that one of the characters in Sisters gives a shout out to the BC in the book. :) She did not indicate, however, whether or not she wanted to read those as well.

She just walked in, and told me she finished Drama BTW, lol

I was going to say, however, that I don't think I read the original Babysitter's Club series.

In a complete non sequitur - I love Tim Curry! :D

Oh and my daughter loved Drama by Raina Telgemeier Drama!! I've just had to stop her after she's given me like 5 spoilers!!! LOL

I just told her that Raina is redoing the Babysitter Club in the same format and she grinned at me! Between this and the Warrior Cat series I may need to sell an organ or something. Heh.

message 54: by Laurie (new)

Laurie (lauriemarie8) Recently got really curious about war photographers (and lovers) Robert Capa and Gerda Taro. So I'm reading historical fantasy...
* Waiting for Robert Capa: Started fantastic. A bit confusing in some parts, since it jumps from "present" to past but is quite easy to get the hang of it and get involved in the story.

*Hotel Florida: Truth, Love, and Death in the Spanish Civil War : Haven't read it yet, but looking forward on getting involved with the love stories of Martha Gellhorn and Hemingway, Arturo Barea and Ilsa Kulcsar, Capa and Taro <3.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I went ahead and started Clariel this morning. Way too early to make any prognostications, though.

message 57: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm sorry, what is this "reading" you speak of? I feel like I did that once...

message 58: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I listen to a lot of books. But reading? Hmmm.

message 59: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I haven't even been doing that! I was supposed to start Sharp Objects with you like 14 decades ago, but have I even looked at it? Nope.

message 60: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments You should try that Christmas Carol audio. Tim Curry is awesome.

I'm happy that the audio has gotten me to chapter3 of the book. I'm going to start chpt 4 today. So excited because progress!

That must be so wonderful, to talk about those books with your daughter. One of the best reasons to read! I'd donate one of my organs if I could :)

(I love the style)

I think that is Sweetest and the most awesome offer anyone has ever made! :)

"ve been trying to start Sisters for days now, but my damn job of teaching other people's children keeps getting in the way! LOL
Tomorrow is the last day before WInter Break, and its an early out day at that. My hope, is that I can allow myself to ignore the many chores waiting for me and read Sisters in one sitting like I did Smile.
Then in a day or two I would like to start The Martian which I bought (and is still) on sale (Yay) in Kindle format for $3.00.

message 65: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Nyssa,

I enjoyed the Martian a great deal and CANNOT WAIT to see the movie version. I haven't checked recently, but the cast (led by Matt Damon) was shaping up to be spectacular!

As a fellow teacher. Leave the darn chores. Read the book!

Sounds like a plan! LOL

Valerie (darthval) | 120 comments I am currently listening to Skin Game, reading The Killing Moon in DTE, and reading Yes Please on Kindle.

message 69: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I'm between books. Finished The Free today.

So I'm like, book naked on my profile.

Tell me how Yes Please is. I've been thinking about getting it.

I had to read this sentence three times. My brain couldn't get wrapped around it.

"I've been dranking, I've been dranking..."

message 73: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I HAVE been dranking and my brain read it perfectly fine. Which I'm sure is a problem, but... meh.

Valerie (darthval) | 120 comments MrsJoseph wrote: "Valerie wrote: "Tell me how Yes Please is..."

I am about halfway through. It is just okay for me. I was hoping for more humor that I've come to expect from folks like Tina Fey or Chelsea Handler.

message 76: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments So then this week I started The Dark Lord of Derkholm for this group, Mr. Murder for another group, and The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror for my audio.

This Stupidest Angel. Well, the story itself is decent, but nothing too spectacular. But every now and then something comes out that's fucking hilarious. I almost spit my coffee this morning.

message 77: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I was underwhelmed by Stupidest Angel, buy I've often wondered if reading format was part of the problem. I'd unwittingly bought a large print book, and I found it harder to read. Might have to give it another go someday.

I'm currently reading The Magic Thief: Home, which I'm hoping to finish tomorrow so I can start Hogfather. :>

message 78: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I think the audio helps. This reader has pretty good voices and delivery.

message 79: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Oh, and I had thought of reading Hogfather.

message 80: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I loved The Stupidest Angel. I think partly because it was my first Christopher Moore book and I had no expectations, so it was just quirky and unexpected and I loved it. But then I've really enjoyed most of his other books as well, so maybe his style just works for me.

message 81: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I find Moore sort of hit or miss. Love Dirty Jobs, enjoyed Fools and Bite Me, but meh about some others.

message 82: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I'll definitely try more of his stuff.

message 83: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I read Bite Me. It was cool.

message 84: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I finished my book last night, but this morning made the horrible discovery that Hogfather is not in my Discworld collection. :(

So we watched it instead, as I finished wrapping presents.

No idea what I want to read now, but I just got a bunch of GNs for Giftmas. :)

message 85: by Greg (new)

Greg | 201 comments Just finished reading Operation Sting, a fun MG book about a team of insect-like micro-robots whose task it is to locate and retrieve a powerful prototype weapon from a criminal gang.

Earlier reads this month include The Turtle Boy (horror), Guts (horror), Bleach Volume 01: Strawberry and the Soul Reapers (fantasy/horror manga) and Blue Exorcist, Vol. 1 (more fantasy/horror manga).

message 86: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm currently reading an ARC I won from a contest... but it's not any of our FOF genres - it's just a psychological thriller type. But it's very good, actually. I'm liking it quite a lot. It's called The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.

message 87: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) It is pretty interesting. I can't wait to know what happens.

The formatting of the ARC is terrible, there are numbers randomly throughout... but I'm having no trouble reading around them, and especially since I'm just coming out of a ridiculously long reading slump, I think that's pretty telling that I'm enjoying it.

message 88: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I started another audio yesterday, Lirael. I decided to go ahead and skip the re-read of Sabriel, as it seemed I could. And because Tim Curry!

But even Tim isn't saving this. I'm bored out of my skull. This girl is stupid and annoying. I'll give it until I'm done with work today, and if it's not better I'm chucking it.
