Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments When I read and review a crime novel, I often put a red dot next to potential culprits. With Aussie author, Jane Harper's latest novel, The Survivors I had a lot of red dots, and I truly did not guess which one to circle in red until the reveal. Another brilliant piece of Aussie crime fiction.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments The print version of Two Girls Down is definitely a 5★ read, but the narration by Tavia Gilbert is absolutely brilliant! It had me laughing, crying, gasping, angry…. I wish I could give it more stars. Author Louisa Luna and actor Tavia Gilbert, two very talented ladies!

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments I've loved everything I've read by British author, Rachel Joyce, so I went out of my way to get this little book of heart-warming, festive short stories. I was not disappointed. A Snow Garden and Other Stories is a lovely read.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments The blurb for The Lending Library, the debut novel by American author, Aliza Fogelson is what attracted me: a community lending library, sounds wonderful. But then the plot was hijacked by the main character's acquisitive obsession. I can't recommend this one :(

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments After my little audio fest of the Harper Connelly series, I thought I would round it off by rereading the short story Dig Here, that features my favourite cadaver locator. Charlaine Harris teams up with Andrew Gross for this one.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments I can see from the ratings that Kate Atkinson's short story, Shine, Pamela! Shine! didn't please everyone, but I thought it was worth every cent. Hilarious and insightful.

Loved it even as an oldie, love Matthew Reilly and I wonder if his typing fingers can keep up with his imagination. As a reader, I was exhausted!
5 stars
Can't wait for the next book AND what will happen in the Supreme Labyrinth?

Just got this one and very excited to read it, so won't read your review yet. Worth noting though that mine included Embargo of 13th Oct so you might have to check that?

Same thing happened with Survivors! Was supposed to be Embargo til 22/9 but not everyone got the same memo! Very frustrating!

Carolyn | 9840 comments Watch Her Vanish (Rockwell and Decker #1) by Ellery A. Kane Watch Her Vanish by Ellery A. Kane, a psychological thriller with a creepy plot that I enjoyed, but had trouble liking the main characters, a detective and a psychologist who both had that overused cliche of tortured pasts they were running away from.

The publishers only seem to state that for the physical books - NG doesn't have it as I've checked :) You'll never get everyone obeying the embargo rule. I used to get frustrated by it too, but figured it's not my problem so don't worry about others doing it now :)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments I absolutely love Garry Disher’s Constable Paul Hirschhausen series, but I do feel that, in the audio version, British actor Shaun Grindell’s rendition of the Australian accent is a tiny bit off, with occasional Kiwi vowels, and I’m sure that some mispronunciations (Wagga, Bourke, Barossa) will grate on Aussie ears. His narration is too heavy on emphasis, and some of his pronunciation of common words is also quite strange (lichen?). His thuggish cops seem to default to British. So I think it lets this excellent novel down: 5 stars for the book Bitter Wash Road, but only 3 stars for the narration. I’ve listened to a sample of the next book in the series and I am really pleased to say that Steve Shanahan’s narration is excellent.

It's a shame when the narrator lets the author down - lower ratings reflect on the author not the narrator too. And why would they get a British reader to read an Australian book? Blows the mind how much they just don't think!

Another reason I won't listen to audio!

But when you get a good one, Brenda, it's wonderful. Tavia Gilbert's narration of Louisa Luna's Alice Vega series, and Steve Shanahan's of #2 in this series, are excellent. I always make sure I listen to the audio version of Alexander McCall Smith's No 1 Ladies Detective Agency books, Adjoa Andoh's voice is wonderful. The audios I listen to are rereads, so I don't need to take notes for reviewing... just sit back and enjoy like story time at school :)

I agree, Marianne. Steve Worsley's narrations of Stuart MacBride's Logan McRae series are brilliant! I also loved Michelle Obama's reading of her own book, Becoming, although in general I don't love authors narrating their own books.

I agree Brenda. It's up to the publishers to tell us if there is an embargo on books through Netgalley and some of them do tell you not to review before a certain date. But if they don't go for it! It's not up to us to second guess whether there is an embargo.
