I also was not blown away by it, but I did not read it first - I was warned! I actually read one of the later ones first then came back to it and I am glad I did, as I might not have kept going if this had been my first contact :)

Alexis K. | 15 comments My review of Sleep State Interrupt by T. C. Weber.

Sleep State Interrupt is a dystopian, science-fiction novel set a few decades into the future. In this world, the government has been taken over by corporate interests and America is suffering as the global elite loot the country for its wealth. An unlikely hero appears in the form of Waylee, an ex-reporter with a psychological condition, who is hell bent on bringing her tormentors to justice. It traces her winding journey as she assembles a (somewhat) reliable team and overcomes the raw power of the State to give America its last, and perhaps final, wake-up call.

I'm a huge sci-fi fan but do not get the hype over the Culture series. Consider Phlebas was a plotless yawn for me.

message 1975: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Usually, after reading the print or e-book version of a novel, I find that listening to the audio book enhances the whole experience. Sadly, this is not the case with Anni Taylor's One Last Child . I believe the narrator to be poorly chosen, as she has a sharp, jarring voice, making the whole experience, frankly, less than pleasant when one has to endure fifteen hours of it. Strangely, her voice is much more tolerable when she narrates Nine Perfect Strangers. Due to the length, the unconvincing motive and plot holes, I gave the print version 3.5★s. I can only give the audio 3★s

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments It seems that whatever Maggie O'Farrell turns her hand to, it ends up brilliant. Hamnet is no exception, just my kind of historical fiction. Have the tissues ready though.
