I think I'll just get the one - The Masked Rider: Cycling in West Africa. It's too bad he didn't narrate them himself. He narrated Clockwork Angels. I was listening to the sample and he's got a lovely deep voice, nicer to listen to than Brian Sutherland who narrates Peart's books.

I agree. My paperback copy is 247pp so double check.

I did one a while ago for this reason. Maybe it's time to revisit the theme.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments I have a bit of a haul that I've been saving up but should put on here for insurance reasons (yay).

Authors for Fireys auctions beginning to arrive too:

A beautiful collectors edition of A Court of Thorns and Roses
A Thousand Nights

Oh, I missed that one. I agree it is necessary to do it from time to time. Same thing with chunksters. I tend to pile them and never get to them.

Heh chunksters don't make a good monthly challenge unfortunately. I found the shorter reads were a bit similar, everyone finished in the first 2 weeks and then there radio silence. But looking at all the 150-175pp books i have, maybe I just need to rethink this a bit more.

You could have a challenge where two books are required. Both books would have to be less than a certain number of pages and add up to add least a certain number of pages together.

The year-long chunkster challenge from a few years ago was perfect for that! Mine tend to stay on my TBR for a long time too..

I haven't listened to any he narrated but I heard a 2 hr interview on the radio and he did have a good voice for that type of thing. Listening to him speak and answer the questions made me curious to his books as he seemed so down to earth and intelligent

I bought the audiobook. Just checked challenge rule and it seems they are indeed slightly different this year:

In the case of ebooks & audiobooks, use the hardcover or paperback edition to determine page length.

In the past it has been the most common hardback edition that it we use to determine page number. In this case the hardback edition that is listed first in the GR search engine I can't actually find using the "add book" facitily but if you open the book page, go to "all editions", then search "hardback" you will see that the top result has 229 pages.

Do you still think there is an issue I should raise on the appropriate thread with Janice? Thanks for flagging this Kristie and Sarah :-)

message 113: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think you have to use the most popular edition Margo. I think that's usually also the one that comes up when you search for the book.

Exactly. That is what I was trying to suggest. You explained it much better than me. :)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11332 comments Rusalka wrote: "Heh chunksters don't make a good monthly challenge unfortunately. "

Yes, I agree. A couple of years ago I stopped setting a goal in books and started setting my personal goal in pages (15,000 pages per year) in the hope of including more chunksters in my reads. I manage to include more now, but then they don't do well for challenges, so I end avoiding them most of the time anyways.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments ... bloody chickens. I just... goddammit.

I got book mail late last week. Got:
Magic Bleeds
The Wire in the Blood
Sword of Destiny finally got the right second book for Lexx
The Wild Beasts of Wuhan

It was our giant city bookfair on the weekend. I went as I wanted to get books i enjoyed to put in the Little Libraries I keep pillaging and putting in books I didn't like. I ended up spending $1.14 per book (I spent the amount I would on one and a third new paperback at a bookshop), and ended up with a shopping bag and a half of books for me... oops.
Bitten
On a Pale Horse
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
Stonemouth
Brilliance of the Moon
Saving Francesca
The Whites
Succubus Dreams
Dime Store Magic
Moonshine
The Twelve
Burning Bright this was not the book I thought it was... oh well.
Flashback
The Wolf and the Watchman
Lincoln in the Bardo
The Art of Fielding I only got this because of the stupid amount of sports tasks that pop up.
The Water Knife
The Eye of the Sheep
The Whale Rider
The North Water
The Dante Club
The Half-Drowned King
Here Come The Dogs
Days Without End
Sacred Games

The girl in the flat out the back went too, but did the rookie move of no goodreads app and bought a second copy of Wintersmith by accident. Now also ours.

Janice (jamasc) | 60166 comments That's quite the haul, Rusalka!

I picked up Audible's Daily Deal yesterday - The Chestnut Man. I used some of my coupon for it and got it for free.

message 126: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19366 comments I've gotten a few of the Audible daily deals recently. I have picked up:

On the Come Up
Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed
The Eighth Sister
With the Fire on High
The Chestnut Man

Using my coupon and some other deals, they average out to be just under $3 each. :)

I also picked up Our Harlem: Seven Days of Cooking, Music and Soul at the Red Rooster for free.

Annerlee | 2875 comments Just bought 3 audio books in the audible sale:
The Diamond Brothers in The Falcon's Malteser which I read at the recommendation of a young teenager ages ago. I remember it being quirky and hilarious in places.

The Fall of Hyperion which would be another re-read. I love this epic series and hope to re-visit it on audiobook pretty soon. Will take me a while to get through (and I need to finish It first)

Travels with My Aunt has been recommended to me twice within a few days by different people (whilst discussing books in general in the offline world - which doesn't actually happen that often). As it was also in the Audible sale, it's obviously meant to be. (Although it was a SciFi sale ?!? Which is also a bit weird for a non-SciFi book, no?)

Thanks! I also ended up with a credit for a free audiobook in the deal, so I really made out well! It will end up being 7 books for $14.80. I'm pretty happy with that. I just need to decide which book to use the credit on. :)

What a fabulous gift!!

I've been reading reviews trying to figure out exactly what the controversy is. From what I can make out, the author is a white woman living in New York writing about the Mexican immigrant experience and she has made some comments that would indicate she relates to it more than she possibly could. People were upset that it seemed insensitive and fake on her part. There seems to be more to it, but it wasn't really clear. It's very highly rated though and does sound interesting.

message 132: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4558 comments I recall that part of the problem was that Oprah made it her latest Book Club pick. That can put a lot of power behind the success of a book. There are people saying that the author isn't Mexican or Latinx and therefore can't possibly tell a Mexican mother's struggle to freedom. It's causing a lot of discussion about who can write what stories. Should authors be restricted to writing only about their gender, race, nationality, personal experience, etc.? I don't think so. With all the controversy surrounding the book, I'm more interested in reading it. I think I can make my own decision as to whether I like it or not without someone critiquing it for me and dictating who should write a book and who shouldn't.

Janice (jamasc) | 60166 comments There was something too about the launch party where barbed wire was used as part of the table centerpieces. She apparently had barbed wire painted on her fingernails as well. People were offended by the insensitivity of trivializing a symbol of oppression in such a manner.

message 134: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I just picked up The Island of Sea Women. It sounds so interesting and it's been on my radar for a while, but it's relatively new so still pricey. But today it's a deal at kobo and kindle, only $2.99!

message 135: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60166 comments Thanks for the heads up, Peggy. I checked and it's $2.99 here as well so I picked it up.

Margo | 11685 comments Oh that was a good deal Peggy, It's quite pricy here.

I've been looking at all the great books people have picked up (way to go Rusalka!!!) and congratulating myself of getting this far into February without buying anything BUT I've still managed to add to my TBR because my Mam picked up Grown-Ups. She is an old favourite of mine though lately she seems to be gone off the boil a bit - we shall see :-)

message 138: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I used to read her books too Margo, she was one of my favourite authors for a while. A long time ago, when I mostly read chicklit. But at some point I didn't enjoy them so much anymore and I stopped reading them. I think my taste in books changed. Maybe I should try again.

The final day of the audible UK has definitely been the best. I picked up
Fellside and
Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit.

Also a non sale deal, Dispel Illusion. My hubby loves the series though it's a bit maths-heavy for me.
