I'm so sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you feel, I put Shiloh down a couple of months ago. He was 15.
The Fallen
by David BaldacciIn this 4th book in the 'Amos Decker' series, the FBI consultant and his partner Alex Jamison investigate a series of bizarre murders. The book can be read as a standalone.
Convoluted plot but it's a good story. 3 stars

Finished The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von ArnimMy Review:www.goodreads.com/review/show/3479149498
The Devil in the White City
by Erik LarsonNot a fictional mystery but rather an absolutely fascinating true history of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and of the country's first psychopathic serial killer, H.H. Holmes. If you're not familiar with either don't feel bad, neither was I. Probably 3/4 fair and 1/4 Holmes. Wonderfully written with lots of evocative details of the time. Highly recommended, 5 stars.

Now starting GONE TO DUST by Matt Goldman, the first book in his ongoing detective Nils Shapiro mystery series.
Nancy wrote: "Still working on Ellroy's The Big Nowhere. We lost our sweet, sweet dog who's been with us 13 years the day before yesterday so my progress is a bit slow these days."Sorry to hear that Nancy. :-(
Recently started "Sister" by Rosamund Lupton. I read some very positive reviews about it and that made me curious. It's been 100 pages so far, but I really enjoy it. Hope the end doesn't dissapoint me. 🤷♀️
I'm reading a number of books at the moment (hello, short attention span...look a moth!) but the one most relevant to this group would be Last Words by Michael Koryta. I'm into the last 25% or so of the book and it has gotten very good...it was hard to get into at first but really picks up roughly halfway through.
A mystery/thriller, set in Shetland, Scotland. I enjoyed it. My 4 star review. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I just finished The Dying Light.
Here’s my 3 1/2 star review:

3. Kill Switch by Steve Lee
It's no secret I'm partial to Sir Robert Carey and his Elizabethan escapades, and I loved An Air of Treason, number 6 in P.F. Chisholm's historical mystery series.

I didn't see your post - but I'm sad to think of you having that empty feeling. :(

I recently bought four more Simenon novels (the Penguin reprints). He's out on top as one of my favorite writers.

Just finished The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware. za very disappointing book. now reading Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow and Kill Switch by Steven Lee.
Invisible Prey
by John SandfordLucas Davenport #17, OK to read as a stand-alone. This book is a great read -- plot, dialogue, characters, everything. A rich old lady gets killed and, while going through the house afterwards, maybe some antiques are missing. This is one of the best of the Prey series, 5 stars.

I recently acquired a gently used copy of Mr Hire's Engagement. I'm looking forward to reading it, but it's going to be a few months before I get to it.
Just started on THE COLD COLD GROUND by Adrian McKinty, the first book in his Detective Sean Duffy series set during The Troubles in the early 80's North Ireland.
Murder and the Movies
by David ThomsonMovie critic and historian David Thomson writes about the ubiquitous depiction of death and murder in the media, especially films, and asks what it says about us, the consumers who happily watch all the dying and destruction.
Thomson is knowledgeable and has a sense of humor. 3.5 stars

Still working on Ellroy's The Big Nowhere. Sometimes it's too mentally much so it's going a bit slowly, but on the whole, it's an amazing novel.

You're welcome Nancy. 😊
Yes. He’s definitely very relaxed, whereas all the suspects and other characters are excitable. I’ve been listening to the books in order on audio on YouTube. They go by really quick too. I’m generally not a fan of mysteries with a police detective as the detective, but the Maigret books are an exception, as well as PD James’ Dalgliesh books. I like them more than other police detective books because the characters are more “grey” or ambiguous, rather than “black and white” or all good or bad. I only started the Simenon books this year and was skeptical at first, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised

They really are. We have another dog, a bit younger, and all of yesterday she sat at the front door waiting for her sister to come back. Gutwrenching.
