Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair by Joël Dicker The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair by Joël Dicker

When a writer is accused of murder, his protégé decides to prove the author is innocent and write a book about it.

Good but overly long story that's very funny in places. 3.5 stars

I can recommend Tudor's latest novel The Other People. It's every bit as good as The Chalk Man.

Araych | 676 comments Dead Silence Dead Silence (Doc Ford, #16) by Randy Wayne White by Randy Wayne White

Doc Ford #16, OK to read as stand-alone. Ford tries to find a kidnapped 14-year -old Native American boy. White is a fine professional writer but I've never been a fan of this series, mainly because I never cared for the Tomlinson character. In this book there's not much Tomlinson but many chapters detailing the thoughts of the kidnapped boy, which don't advance the plot and had little interest for me. Personal reaction: 2 stars.

Zoe Radley | 558 comments I have finished the long call by Ann Cleeves... am not sure how I like it and why? It has an easy way of flowing in the narrative but not sure whether it’s as good as Vera... probably need a few more books with the new character to suss him out. Currently reading The Widows Club by Amanda Brooke very intriguing so far.

I enjoyed The Long Call. Try not to set it against her other books -- this one's very different.

I noticed that you've had a couple of duds in your reading lists of late. Thanks for sharing your take on them and hope your luck improves with the next title.

Deb Jones (feisty56) | 99 comments Enjoyed the third title in the Leonid McGill series:

When the Thrill Is Gone (Leonid McGill, #3) by Walter Mosley by Walter Mosley

Although part of a series, this can be read as a standalone.

Now going back to a favorite series for me, the Bill Slider police procedurals by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles. I'm on the tenth book, Dear Departed.

Dear Departed (Bill Slider, #10) by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles

message 900: by Lilith (new)

Lilith (lilithp) | 368 comments Wow, The Holdout by Graham Moore deserves the adjective "unputdownable".
I finished at 4:30 am because I had to know what happened. But I also wanted to slow down, because I wanted to spend more time with Maya Seale, the protagonist, Bobby Nock, the defendant, as well as many of the other characters.

I was up so late I missed my webinar this morning, but I forgive Mr. Moore. Props to him for tackling issues of race, class and justice vs, legal system- and witnessing so truthfully and powerfully, yet never deterring the thrill of a legal thriller.
