Matthew | 88 comments Am almost 3/4 of the way through Gone Girl. Yeah, I know, way to live in the past, man. Heh. I haven't seen the movie but know the twist--no surprise since reviews of other books and movies in the past few years have referenced it by saying "such and such a character Gone Girled himself or herself"--but that has in no way diminished my enjoyment of the story. If anything, knowing the twist has enhanced my appreciation for how clever a writer Gillian Flynn is. She plays completely fair with her readers.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments Before the Fall Before the Fall by Noah Hawley by Noah Hawley

When a private plane crashes, the only man who survives saves the life of a young boy. Hailed as a hero at first, the man is soon harassed by naysayers and social media. (You can picture it, right? 🤨)

Interesting story. 3 stars

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments A Book of Bones A Book of Bones (Charlie Parker, #17) by John Connolly by John Connolly

Intrepid private investigator Charlie Parker - who has supernatural abilities - is chasing a long-time enemy and trying to prevent Armageddon. The book can be read as a standalone but does refer back to earlier books in the series.

Good book but there are too many extraneous story lines. 3 stars

Araych | 676 comments Then We Take Berlin Then We Take Berlin (Joe Wilderness, #1) by John Lawton by John Lawton

Officially labeled a spy story, this is actually a wonderful, vivid, detailed historical novel mostly about two people -- John Holderness, an English crook put into the spy service during WW II, and his adventures in Germany just after the war, and Nell Burkhardt, a German girl who sees far too much.
Even though the ending is poorly done (possibly setting up a sequel) I still gave this book 5 stars -- highly recommended.

Barbara | 1 comments I just finished with Shatter by Michael Robotham
I didn't finish it, just finished with it because it was so unpleasant, unbelievable, too long, I liked maybe one of the characters - not the main one - and I just didn't see any point in sticking with it. Saw a great review of one of his books, and this one was the only one my library had so I gave it a shot.
