I bought quite a lot of books this month but I did my usual 6-month culling of the book shelves and rehomed quite a few books.

I finished A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire (Blood and Ash, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout yesterday. It was amazing. It took me so long to read compared to her other books. It is a big book (around 800 pages) but I also think it's because I'm in a spoiler group for this series run by Jen and some of her newer fans have some crazy-ass theories and I spent so much of this book worrying that their theories were going to come true. It gave me so much anxiety as some of the stuff they really want to see happen.... it would be a DNF thing for me as it's something I absolutely hate reading and it actually caused me so much anxiety because you all know Jen is my fave author ever and I've loved her books for 9 years. Anyway... anxiety aside I did love it.

I need a break from fantasy before jumping into my buddy read of Empire of Gold with Britt so I've just started Sparks by Wendy Higgins It's a NA/Adult contemporary so this one should take me too long.
Still listening to The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air, #2) by Holly Black as well.

Kay what was the anxiety inducing theory?! I must know!!!

Totally get the need for a fantasy break after that one. My thoughts will still be there when you catch up.

If you can do it at the end of the month beginning of next I would jump in with Serpent & Dove too. I just have a few ebooks I have to read before I can get to it.

Cinderella is Dead sounds interesting, curious on your thoughts when you finish it.
I still havent read any of Amie Kaufman or Meagan Spooner's books but The Other Side of the Sky sounds right up my alley!

Looks like you have a pretty excellent reading month ahead of you

I’ll put it in a spoiler tag as from my comment above it’s very obvious it didn’t happen haha. (view spoiler)

I'm 200-ish paged into Empire of Gold and I'm struggling. Nothing to do with the book as I am enjoying it but I'm just struggling with reading in general right now. I think the fact that it is a big book is making it worst as I get in my own head and think this is gonna take so long which then makes me not want to read.
I've struggled with long book a lot recently, it took me almost a whole week to read Jen Armentrout's new one and if you've known me a while you know that is not like me at all!

I'm just so torn. Do I abandon it for now and go back to it at another time? I don't even know. I'm so annoyed at myself and sad because Empire of Gold is my most anticipated release of 2020 *sigh* *cries*

message 259: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1839 comments I think you put it away for now and go back to it later. If you're not feeling up to reading something that long right now/struggling with reading in general, maybe try something shorter, less dense, and come back to Empire of Gold later?

message 260: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6455 comments Mod
Put it aside. Take a reading break do something else for a bit. Then read a short book or two and get back to this one when you are ready. No point in forcing yourself to read, that's how you end up hating a book you would otherwise love.

message 261: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Definitely put it aside and come back to it when you're in the right headspace! I had to do that with Ballad of Songbirds. I was SO EXCITED for it but then just was struggling through.

Finished Sparks by Wendy Higgins which was a super super cute romance. I loved it.

Finally finished The Empire of Gold (The Daevabad Trilogy, #3) by S.A. Chakraborty and I don't really know how I feel about it. I'm so torn about it. The more I sit and think about it the more disappointed I think I am with it. I'm going to process it a bit more before writing my review.

I'm about to start Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron and listening to The Darkest Star (Origin, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout on audio as a re-read.

Finished Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron I gave it 3 stars. I loved it at the start but then I felt like the second half wasn't as exciting as the first. I started to get bored.

Finished Broken (Blackwater Pack, #1.5) by Hannah McBride which was amazing. I gave it 5 stars! Absolutely loved it.

Up next: Mirage (Mirage, #1) by Somaiya Daud

message 269: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1839 comments Honestly 3 is pretty standard for me Kay! Can definitely tell I've been reading a lot more over lockdown since when I read three in July (instead of the 5 that I had been doing) I was disappointed even though that's pretty standard for me in a normal year!

message 270: by Kayleigh {K-Books}, YA Fantasy Fan (new)

Kayleigh {K-Books} (kayley_12) | 2304 comments Mod
Thanks Jo. To be honest I usually average around 4 or 5 so it's not that much smaller than usual. I've just been reading more during lockdown so compared to some previous months this year it's a lot lower.

I have been in a slump though. Everything just seemed a bit meh to me in the past few months.

Kayleigh {K-Books} (kayley_12) | 2304 comments Mod
Reading slump is hopefully over. I started reading Mirage and I'm really enjoying it.

Also finished listening to the audiobook of The Darkest Star (Origin, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout and will be starting to listen to The Burning Shadow (Origin, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout this evening.

Work is killing me so I'm hardly reading... again. This quarter has actually been the absolute worst for me. I'm hoping I can get a routine going which means I can read a bit more.

I'm still reading Mirage and listening to The Burning Shadow. I've been trying to do some fitness classes at my local gym lately which has cut into my reading time after work. Damn, if only reading made you skinny haha

I get it, always sucks when you're slumping. The year I did my A-Levels/started Uni in 2015, I read hardly anything the entire year and it felt so awful. Hope you manage to find some great books for the rest of the year!

I loved The Darkest Star Elena. Not surprising, it was a re-read for me. Jen is my fave author of all time, I'm re-reading ready for book 3.

I finished reading Mirage (Mirage, #1) by Somaiya Daud I enjoyed it. It's not the best fantasy in the world but it was okay. It was super slow to start but I was still intrigued in the storyline. It definitely got better after 100 pages. It was a bit weird in terms of hte genre. It reads as a epic fantasy but then there's odd scenes here and there to remind you they're on a different planet so it's technically a sci-fi..... but other than those scenes you forget it's a sci-fi. I will be continuing the series to see what happens though.

I'm starting The Girl at the Hanging Tree by Mary Gray which I have as an ARC

message 283: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6455 comments Mod
That definitely sounds different Kay, but glad it got moving and you enjoyed it!

The Girl at the Hanging Tree sounds interesting. You'll have to let me know how well the multipersonality is done! As well as all the cult stuff. I'm intrigued.

I've put Girl at the Hanging Tree on hold for the time being because I have 3 blog tour books I need to review first. I've managed to get one finished and I'm 23% through another.

So I've finished the audiobook of The Burning Shadow (Origin, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout which I loved and rated 5 stars. I've also finished House of Dragons (Royal Houses, #1) by K.A. Linde which I rated 4 stars. I was really impressed with it.

I'm currently reading The Brightest Night (Origin, #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout and currently listening to Spellcaster (Spellcaster, #1) by Claudia Gray on audio. The narrator of Spellcaster is possibly my fave narrator I've come across to date.
