Amy | 12900 comments Trim 2020 Continuation – Announcement, Community, and Chit Chat Thread

Here we go – Here is the Official Unofficial Trim 2020 Continuation. We will use this thread to announce the monthly number, to talk about our books, chit chat, build community. My suggestion is that we do not use this thread for our reviews, but to maybe point to their location. Speaking of points, you’re not going to get any for this unofficial challenge, but don’t forget to get your points by placing your reviews in the monthly or the other folder. People can set up Buddy Read threads if they like to follow the books they are reading together. I think we should keep up the planning and organizational thread, so if new folks want to join us, or we need to make some adjustments and rearrangements, it will not be difficult to do. That’s a great place to post a new or revised List of 24. Remember it’s supposed to be fun and optional. This is no stress…. Just to finish out what we started – together!

If you are just joining us, this is PBT members continuing a challenge for 2019 to its inexorable end. It’s easy to join. Simply pick 24 books and number them how you wish, and each month we (with announcers Joanne and Meli) will announce a randomized number a day or so after the main group tag is revealed, and that number will be the book to read for the month. If you wish to organize your list to read particular Buddy Read Books with others, there is a humongous list just listed below. If you are joining us late, do not put a book in the numbers that have already been called. Remember. You do not have to read your book for the month, you do not have to read it in the month it is called. You do not have to do anything at all. You can join a buddy read, even if it wasn’t your book for the month. Anyone can change their lists at any time. Do whatever they please. All this is just for fun and community. And of course to continue clearing our TBR’s and to finish the Buddy Reads some of us were excited about. New Members to PBT, don’t forget to check out the rest of the group’s exciting activities. We are a fun bunch and look forward to getting to know you.

Regarding the Buddy Reads, some of these people are from last year’s lists. They may have changed lists, may have left the group, or are not participating. But many appear to be with us. Just don’t cast them in stone. There may be people from last year who just join us for a particular book and number. As long as it runs smoothly. I see no reason why the mods won’t let us do the final 12 in 2021. If there are mistakes or additions to the Buddy Read List, or new 24 lists posted on the Planning and Organizational Thread, I can help organize and edit. Here are the people who have posted lists already, and are ready to continue playing and reading with us.

I'm guessing you have done buddy reads before? I haven't so how would you usually do one? Check in at set points or at the end?
The Great Whites have been on the bucket list for years as they are one of the few large shark species I haven't dived with yet. Got to do these things before my body won't let me. Unfortunately they will insist on a cage for this one. That will also be a first for me as it has always been open water for all the other sharks, not sure I'll like it. I did survive the cage with saltwater crocs but it does cramp movement.

The book I have for #11 is A Study in Silks not Women of the Silk
thanks

message 29: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12900 comments Yes Ma'am and did the other removals for you late last night.

So excited for the folks reading a Marriage of Opposites. Its probably my favorite book ever. It made my top ten for the decade list. i just loved every word. And Alice Hoffman? Pure Magic. I have a book of hers on my Trim that I haven't read, and another for Poll Ballot Tally.... Perhaps at that point, I will have completed all of her works....

I think we should set up a thread when the first one starts. As reading goes along questions and thoughts about the book. I think this should be a thought provoking book.

I am impressed by your experiences with sharks. I love the ocean, but admit to be not much of a swimmer, so it is beyond my realm.

I'm a sinker actually but a 3mm wetsuit gives me perfect neutral buoyancy. Hence Diving as soon as old enough, then you are allowed to sink.

Idit | 1028 comments I got Le Bal & Snow in Autumn by Irène Némirovsky. I'm pretty excited by it

message 37: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Jen, I laughed at your comment because neutral buoyancy is what we are supposed to aim for but I like to sink like a rock! I wear like 30 pounds with my 5mm!

I think it all stems from doing science research. I dove in fairly shallow water, less than 30 feet (mostly less than 20) and needed to be weighed down so I would stay on the bottom while I worked!

All of my dive friends laugh at me but I have no idea how to dive if I am not in constant peril of sinking into the abyss. Lol.

I used to overweight too working on sandy bottoms in strong current (esp core sampling). A few drift dives helped cure that and then doing coral reef surveys fixed the rest. I do still overweight slightly (I have a weight (3lbs) on a wetsuit and 2 on a dry suit) because like you said it is easier control esp with an Aluminium (Aus and Pacific) tank rather than Steel (UK). Skin suit I sink like a stone anyway.
Nice to meet another person who has done research diving.....got me all my marine bio jobs, they cared not about my degrees.. just that I could dive, hardly breathe underwater and don't puke on boats whatever the weather.

message 39: by Liz (new)

Liz I got The Tea Machine! It's one I already own, I was gifted it a couple of years ago. It looks like a quirky thing involving time-travel, alternative worlds and steampunk! Should be a fun one to start the year :)

message 40: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Jen, what do you do? Have we discussed this?!? Granted I have a horrible memory, but I feel like I would have remembered if you did science research!

I definitely do not sink in a skin. I am a floater. Lol. I have never used an aluminum tank but it sounds lighter than the steel ones I use! I am also jealous of your coral work. When I applied to grad school I applied to a coral research lab, but I did not get in. Ended up loving my research but my fascination with coral continues!

message 41: by Jen (last edited Dec 29, 2019 04:22AM) (new)

Jen (jentrewren) | 1114 comments I did Marine Biology for hons but was diving from 15 (hence marine). I have worked for Liverpool uni in coastal and estuarine zonation as well as on their scallop surveys as a diver and doing my research on benthic snails. I also looked at seagrass beds in Turkey and Coral reefs in Fiji (under USP and AIMS). Then admitted defeat. I was the idiot diver who could do 3 dives on one tank, an employable skill in areas with no electricity for the compressor.

Unfortunately since I wanted to live in Aus that did not get points for a visa so I ended up teaching to get the visa. I haven't taught bio since 2017 as there are so many bio teachers. Now I do Chemistry and Psychology (masters in counselling).

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Oh my gosh! I love it. I did my PhD on intertidal snails, algae, and crabs looking at predator-prey interactions and food web dynamics. I have have done research on other organisms too but have really focused in inverts and ecology.

What level do you teach? High school? College? I was a professor for the past six years but have recently left both academia and science behind for a career in law. Law that is only minimally related to science...as in pharmaceuticals so really nothing I know anything about! Lol

Haha. I was looking at 2 species of snails and their zonation based on food availability. Unfortunately all the previous data had them eating stuff they were never anywhere near so the original scope changed and I spent hours sitting on the bottom of Port Erin bay in January (using your tank to smash back through the ice at the end of a dive is interesting) watching them and then doing lab experiments and dissections of stomach contents. Supervising prof got a paper out of it.

One of my old house mates has been much more successful in the field and actually got an OBE for his work on marine micro plastics.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjxCm...

I teach senior high school so y11/12 mostly (uni entry) but do also have student teachers sent from around the country (Charles Darwin Uni, Curtin, Deakin and Uni SA), not by my choice, I'm just told one is coming and I have no idea where they find me from. Only the best survive our lot. They are a curious bunch and ask loads of questions so if anyone doesn't know their stuff they get eaten esp if they pretend they do.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Shelly, I read Where the Crawford Sing! I really liked that book, but can’t say my ecology background really enhanced my reading. But, the author’s background makes total sense because she beautifully described the area and the animals that live there! I definitely could envision myself in the marsh she described.

Jen, am I right that you are in Australia now? Where are you located? I have relatives that live there, hubby's aunt and her children and my niece and great niece. My sister is visiting right now.

Heather Reads Books (gothicgunslinger) | 859 comments Augh, my #12 is The Terror by Dan Simmons.... a real chonker, 769 pages! I put it on the list because I'm usually skittish about books that long so I keep skipping over it. At least it's also tagged as a thriller...?
