Trim 2020 Continuation - Announcement, Community, and Chit Chat Thread
And the Random number for June is.....19Mine is Strange the Dreamer-I know there is a buddy read planned, but I do not have a copy on hand. My library is at least 2 weeks out before they have drive up service-it could be longer. I should not complain, this is the first book I have not hand on hand.
My #19 is A Breath of Snow and Ashes. It's the first book on my TBR where it's been living since I joined Goodreads.
My #19 is Grand Hotel. There is definitely a buddy read but I forget with whom. It is short, fortunately but I won't get to it until I finish Proust near very end of June.
My 19 is Strange the Dreamer. Which I now have to buy. Almost all of my list lives in my house, but this one doesn't. But two things about S the D. One is that I think its a buddy read with like four people. The other is that I know it fits a Poll ballot tag. I am about to look up my notes to see which one.

I have Kindred also for #19. Really excited to read it!
Six of us.... The three Amy's (AJ). Also Joanne, Margie, was the Sixth Joy D? So glad to read a book with AJ again, and I am going to grab Jason for this one. If he would like to join.
Jen - I can't wait to read either!I almost picked it up by accident when we had the Science Fiction prompt last month.
Joanne - Shall I mail it to you with Karolina's Twins, as soon as I finish it? i am heading to Amazon right now......
The Deed is done! I just ordered the paperback and it will arrive by Thursday. After I read it, I will send it to you Joanne with Karolina's Twins, and you will be all set. The other four will have to fend for themselves, unless you'd like to pass it on..... I also ordered a Gyrffindor Hogwarts beautiful mug cup.
Damn, I still haven't read a comedy tag & my #19 fits - The Inimitable Jeeves! Can I read mine now please?!
There are no rules to this unofficial challenge Jenny - go for it! As one of three hapless quasi moderators, I give you my blessing! Feel free to also join one of the other #19 Buddy reads too..

Like you, most of my Unofficial Trims I picked from the piles I have on my blanket chest...this just happens to be one I slid in at the last minute to join the buddy read-maybe my dog will read along with me 😁

I keep doing that that by accident, reading books on the list but not called and not reading the called books... My library wait times are well beyond June 31 so I will make purchase. I think it will be worth it as I've heard good things.
My #19 is Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup but I forgot it was on my trim list and I already read it in March. LOL
I am behind at least 3 trims...and once Proust finished they are first up! All are books I already owned ax my goal on trim has always been to whittle down rhe longtime TBR books.
My #19 is also Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, and for once the ebook is available at the library! Once I finish up my current tome, I'm going to dive into this one, I think.
My number #19 is Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to a Tribe Called Quest which seems like an awesome book to kick off summer! But, we'll see if I actually get to it. I haven't read a trim book in months :P
Joanne wrote: "Mine is Strange the Dreamer-I know there is a buddy read planned, but I do not have a copy on hand. I normally don't put library books on my Trim List, but I saw the buddy read and wanted to join in. Of course, I did not know at the time the libraries would be closed. This is not the kind of book I would buy (fantasy is not my thing), so I will probably substitute something else.

Jen - Let me know when you're ready to read. I have an audio copy already and can start whenever you're ready.
I think Magdelana and NancyJ also have Kindred for 19.
My #19 is Her Smoke Rose Up Forever, which is a dense read as far as I´ve heard. I may wait a bit, I´m reading a lot of other stuff at the moment. I´m in the happy situation that the Danish libraries have reopened with restrictions and I´m going to work at "my" library tomorrow. Which means I will be able to get it when I´m ready :)
Joy, you and I have quite a few others. So if we miss you on this one.... certainly we all get it about the closures!

Great! Will be fun to have a group read. E-book purchased but I need to finish up a couple of other books for another challenge this week but should be good to go on the 1st.
I cannot wait to dive in to my #19 The Paris Seamstress as it has been on my TBR for way too long without being read! The storyline is intriguing and I am hoping it will be something that just pulls me in!
Amy wrote: "Joy, you and I have quite a few others. So if we miss you on this one.... certainly we all get it about the closures!"I am going to keep looking. Sometimes these books go on sale for Kindle and my library has been adding to its audiobook and ebook inventory.
I think I've read 3 Trim books so far. But my goal was only 6 so I'll take it as a win.My list is still missing #19 and #23, so I supposed this is "dealers choice", and somehow the randomizer is only choosing # that I didn't add books to, lol.
Alot of you guys are reading books I rated 5 stars!
Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, Dumplin'
There are a few of us with Kindred as our #19. I'm creating a Buddy Read thread for us to use, open to anyone who would like to join in.
I have officially thrown at the wall The Elvenbane-too "cheesy" for me AND not even tagged "Cheese" for Poll Tall-it's crossed off as DNF
Speaking of DNF, I seem to be the only person on the planet who is not connecting with strange the dreamer. This thing might arrive in the mail sooner than you can blink Joanne! I have a feeling you’ll just love it! Proportionate to my disconnection will be your enjoyment!
Amy wrote: "Speaking of DNF, I seem to be the only person on the planet who is not connecting with strange the dreamer. This thing might arrive in the mail sooner than you can blink Joanne! I have a feeling yo..."With this type of story Amy, that does not surprise me. I hope your taking the time and generosity to send it to me is not in vain!
Finished Strange the Dreamer - didn't care for it. But got through it by thinking about this emerging idea of maybe there being a number selection prize for those who finish all their identified books each month, and a randomizer roll for those who finish their 12 over the course of the year. I will confer with Joanne and Meli, but I think if folks agree, that might be a fun nuance to this challenge that isn't really a challenge. Hopefully the Grand Hotel people are doing better. Not to late to jump in there!
Finished # 21
The Women In the Castle – Jessica Shattuck – 3***
Three German widows are brought together shortly after World War II ends. I liked the idea of this novel’s story more than I liked the actual book. There are some interesting and thought-provoking themes presented, but I’m probably just overloaded on WWII. On the whole, I found the novel forgettable.

#21 The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
3 stars
The Testaments takes place after the Handmaiden’s Tale. It is told from three points of view. Nicole, Agnes and Aunt Lydia. Nicole lives in Canada, Agnes has grown up in the Gilead where breaks in leadership are becoming more evident, and Aunt Lydia holds a unique position of power even though Gilead is governed by men.
There are large contrasts between Nicole and Agnes and the differences in how they grew up are clear. Aunt Lydia is a more complicated figure. She has helped determine what is taught to girls and has earner her tough and scary reputation. Her backstory makes some of her decisions easier to understand, but she does not expect to be liked.
The last third of the book is the most exciting where the fate of a Gilead is at stake. A plan is created that must be executed very carefully and there are suspenseful events leading up to it. Personal beliefs and responsibilities come into play and the main characters must choose their sides. I have not read the earlier book, but feel the sequel can stand on its own.
#19 This is How it Always Is by Laurie Frankel
4 stars
Author Laurie Frankel’s novel is about the Walsh-Adams family. Rosie is a doctor and her husband, Penn, is a writer. They have five sons. The youngest, Claude, is only three when he starts to question who he is. He would prefer to be a girl and his family is accepting of this. After they relocate to Seattle, Claude chooses the name Poppy. However, the family does not tell people who Poppy is and the secret is hard to keep for the other children. The story talks about how Rosie and Penn try to guide and protect Poppy, but may have different approaches. It also reveals what happens when the secret is learned by others and how the older children have been affected. This is a well written book that focuses on family. Including traits of the other brothers helps give the book balance. The author shows Poppy’s growth, but also that of others around her.

The Bartender's Tale - Ivan Doig
4 stars
Twelve year old Russell (Rusty) Harry tells the story of his father, Tom Harry, mostly during the year of 1960. There is some backstory at the beginning of his spending his first 6 years with his aunt and uncle in Arizona before his father comes to take him back to Montana. His father is owner and bartender of the Medicine Lodge in Gros Ventre. A very reticent man who parcels out few facts about his life. As things begin to change, new people, and people from the past appear, Rusty is constantly on edge that he will lose his father or the life he has come to love. The characters in the town are very colorful. Bit by bit Rusty finds out about his father. A great story, slow paced and thoughtful. Highly recommend.
