I loved that book. Bawled my head off during the book and movie. The movie is really good, too, and stayed really true to the book.

Yes, this is a wonderful book, Kelly! Just read the bit from Justin's POV - wish it could have been a bit longer because he's so interesting and empathic. The different POVs work so well in this story.

Anita (neet413) | 818 comments Just starting a good old fashioned haunted house novel, Maynard's House

"Austin Fletcher, a disturbed young Vietnam War vet, is willed a small house deep in the woods of northern Maine. He comes to own it by the generosity of a brother-in-arms—a fellow soldier and confidante, Maynard Whittier, killed in action by a wayward mortar shell. The rugged landscape of Maine is an intoxicating blend of claustrophobic interiors and endless frozen wastelands. Little by little, the mysterious force in the house asserts itself until Austin isn't exactly sure what is in his mind and what is real. And just when our hero's had enough and is ready to quit the place, a blizzard arrives and the real haunting begins."

SarahCat | 2 comments Currently reading “Clowders” by Vanessa Morgan. It has a great premise, but unfortunately I’m having a hard time connecting with the characters, and that’s making the story a bit so-so for me.

The Alienist (Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, #1) by Caleb Carr
After the mini-series last year I wanted to read The Alienist to see if it was better. But I was intimidated by its 600 pages and historical fiction setting, worried it might be a dense, hard read. How wrong I was. There definitely could have been less of the details the author felt he needed to include to show how much he studied turn of the century New York, but the narrative itself flows nicely, and I'm following the story much easier than I did in the TV series.

I loved that book. The second one was quite as good, but still good. I enjoyed the mini-series too.

Dead Astronauts by Jeff VanderMeer
I've read VanderMeer's Souther Reach trilogy and this book's predecessor, Borne, so I know he writes (really) weird fiction/Sci-Fi. While Borne was one of the strangest books I've ever read, it at least made its own kind of sense. Granted, I'm still early in this one, but.....what the fuck am I reading???!!!?!?!?!

Silly premise, but fun pulpy adventure/horror. Think 1930s Universal mummy movies merging about 1/3 of the way in with a touch of The Wild, Wild West '60s TV show. I'm only about 1/2 way through.
