Tricksters: 2020 Challenge

A place to discuss books with Tricksters in them for our 2020 Reading Challenge.

If you're looking for one of THE best contemporary coming-of-age mixed with myths novels, I highly recommend Son of a Trickster. I read it the last 2 days of 2019 and it was the best way to round out my year in reading. (The author bio following her Acknowledgments was hilarious!) I plan to read book two in the trilogy as soon as I can get my hands on a copy of the hardcover.

Right now I'm looking at Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich as my first pick for this challenge.

What books with tricksters are others thinking about reading for the challenge? Or what books have you already read with tricksters that you'd recommend?

Okay, I've got to read Son of a Trickster for this one. My library wouldn't buy it but said I could request it through ILL.

Charles de Lint has a good one...Someplace to Be Flying. The Rebecca Roanhorse urban fantasy series has a trickster, particularly book 2, Storm of Locusts. There's The Coyote Road: Trickster Tales edited by Ellen Datlow.

I read American Indian Trickster TalesAmerican Indian Trickster Tales by Erdoes a couple of years ago. It’s a large collection of many different Native American tricksters. I would have enjoyed reading it in bits rather than pushing straight through like I did.

I'm currently reading Son of a Trickster.

I've also got the following on my list (I don't expect to read them all for this challenge).

The Coyote Road: Trickster Tales. Noting Annette's comment above, I'll probably just dip into this now and then.
Monkey: A Journey to the West
The Lies of Locke Lamora
Neverwhere
American Indian Trickster Tales
Dream Angus: The Celtic God of Dreams - this one, I'm not convinced is a trickster, although the blurb suggests he performs that role.

I've just remembered that I wanted to read The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories again, in which case Puss-in-Boots could be classed as a Trickster, although I've added him to my Cats category.

(Per Debbie Reese note, Dembicki isn't Native but each of the storytellers in the book are.)

I am so happy you enjoyed it Leah. It was probably my favourite read of 2018 and the next one Trickster Drift is just as good.

I second Someplace to Be Flying! Fantastic book!
Many of De Lints short story collections have tricksters. Its been a while since I read them, so I don't remember the names or which collection they are in, but they are:
Dreams Underfoot, Moonlight and Vines The Ivory and the Horn
And others.

I am impatiently waiting for the third installation! A few months about I phoned my local book story asking when it was out and there was a misunderstanding. The person I spoke to told me it was in and in paperback, so I bought it only realizing it was the second book Trickster Drift, which I already had in hardback. Anyway I ended up re-reading it and this made me want to read Son of a Triskster and I loved both of them just as much as the first time around! It might be my series of the decade too.
The books are supposed to be made into a TV series. I hope they do it justice!

I'm currently reading The Master and Margarita and it fits the challenge like a glove, I mean Woland's troupe does :)
