Ah I love As I Lay Dying! The Whisper of the River and Look Homeward, Angel are both on my shelf, and I really want to read some of the things I have.
Does Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI take place in a rural setting? Thank you in advance.

Thanks so much!
I really want to read Women Talking for this prompt. Can it work? It has Mennonite women in a hayloft. That sounds like a rural setting to me.

One of the best books I read lately is To Live by Hua Yu. It fits the rural setting requirement and it deeply impressed me. plus it made me want to go deeper into the history of China.
on south mountain by david cruise and alison griffith is a true story, in a rural setting, and truely disturbing. it is written really well, worth the read.
I am reading Killers of the Flower Moon for 2019 but I definitely think it would work for this task, for those of you asking.

I picked The Dry, which takes place in rural Australia, but I may have to make the effort to get both books in.
If you haven't read it already, I highly suggest Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens for this one.
I'm going with A Mercy - it's been sitting on my shelf for years and I am always here for some Toni!
I’m about to start Disappearing Earth and hoping the rugged terrain of Russia will suffice for this prompt.
Saqiyuq by Nancy Wachowich in collaboration with Apphia Agalaki Awa, Rhoda Kaujak Katsak, and Sandra Pikujak Katsak
I was just watching Russian Doll and she talks about Emily of New Moon and I am considering reading that or Anne of Green Gables, because I missed reading that as a child and I think they both take place in rural areas?

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...I recommend the Beartown series or Killers of the Flower Moon.
The Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes would be a perfect fit for this read and was (surprisingly) one of my favorite reads of 2019!
The Dry by Jane Harper is a truly excellent book set in rural Australia, if anyone is looking for inspiration.
I would recommend a book by Barbara Kingsolver! I loved both The Bean Trees and Flight Behavior which both take place in rural areas and are from the POV of women who are from rural areas.
Audra wrote: "Would One Hundred Years of Solitude count for this?"Yes, it would definitely fit the challenge.

Thank you!
Would If I Was Your Girl work? It's set in a small fictional town in TN. Bonus: it is by a trans author.
From what I can tell, Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs by Sally Mann fits (rural southeastern US). I've had it on my TBR for a while, so might read it and find out!
