Task 50.1 Diversify Your Reading
Three book task from options. All three books must have different authors and each must be written by a single author. At least two books must be written by "new to you" authors. State which authors fit that category. You can use one of the options twice. Page count must be 750+ pages.
New To Me Authors: Jean Kwok ( Book 1) and Helen Hoang (Book 2)
Page Count:
Book 1: 307 pp
Book 2: 336 pp
Book 3: 382 pp
Total Page Count: 1, 025 pp.
Book 1
Read a fiction book where the main character falls into one of the diversity categories.
I chose Category 2: Refugee/Immigrant
I read GIRL IN TRANSLATION by Jean Kwok.
Girl in Translation
Why The Book Fits Category: Kimberly Chang is the main character. She and her mother emigrate to America (New York City) from Hong Kong. The novel focuses on their experiences assimilating into American culture. The story begins when Kimberly is eleven years old and follows her into adulthood. It is a beautiful novel. I read a lot of it through tears! I also liked how Kimberly handled her own life and never caved into what the men in her life wanted her to do.
Book 2: Read a fiction book by an author who falls into one of the diversity categories. if the author's Goodreads data doesn't clearly indicate how the author fits the diversity category. , provide an outside verification link.
I chose Category 6: Physical Disability
I read THE KISS QUOTIENT by Helen Hoang.
The Kiss Quotient
How Author fits the category Helen Hoang was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder , formerly known as Asperger's syndrome, in 2016. She created her character Stella who also has Asperger's. The Goodreads data mentions Hoang's Asperger's in her author data. I really enjoyed this book. I am not that big of a romance reader so I had avoided it but when I discovered the book was actually about a woman trying to find love with a "disability" I decided it might be a good read. Very cool to see there are romance novels that have disabled characters in them. Very enjoyable read.
Book 3 Read a nonfiction book that is about one of the diversity categories.
I chose Category 5: Nuerodiverse or having a Mental Health disorder.
I read THE GREATV PRETENDER: THE UNDERCOVER MISSION THAT CHANGED OUR UNDERSTANDING OF MADNESS by Susannah Cahalan.
The Great Pretender: The Undercover Mission That Changed Our Understanding of Madness
How Book Fits The Task: Very interesting study of the treatment of people with mental disorders in our society when in 1973 eight people had themselves admitted into a mental facility to learn what it was like in those places. Cahalanm is an awesome writer and I was riveted to the book., I read her BRAIN ON FIRE so I know she has some understanding of the subject of mental disability herself and she was misdiagnosed for several years. This is not a new idea as reporter Nellie Bly did the same in the 19th century. I have read her report too and not a lot had changed in 1973.
