Card 7 Tasks

message 2: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 597 comments For Science Yay task - Book is set in Russia, or written by Russian author, would The Secrets We Kept work? It is set in Russia, but also looks like parts of the story take place in other countries. Haven't ready it but I think it looks like more heavily set in Russia.

The rule of thumb, is that the book be set in at least 50% of the specified country. It's hard to tell from the book blurb just how much is in Russia, and you may have to read it to determine whether or not it will fit. Perhaps someone who has read it can confirm how much is set in Russia.

Carrie (cseydel) | 252 comments Hi there! For the Art/Literature "Nay" task, can we read a book in the Dark Tower series itself? I'm probably going to read book 2 next year.

Please indicate the task in your questions so that people don't have to go out of the thread to find out what the task is.

The task is "to read a book in a series with 8 primary works". Since The Dark Tower Series has 8 primary works, you may read any of the 8 books for this task.

If you have Card 8, History Nay (read a book that is 1st or 2nd in a series), you could read The Drawing of the Three (book 2) for that task, and the third book The Waste Lands (book 3) for this task. Maybe you can slot in some of the other books in the series into other tasks to help you work your way through it.

Because this is turning out to be a difficult task to gopher for, I'm going to be more lenient and say yes.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I fount these although, I think one of them was from Almeta.
The Merlot Murders (Wine Country Mysteries #1) by Ellen Crosby
In the Absence of Light by Adrienne Wilder
The Vintage Caper by Peter Mayle

message 11: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60157 comments That last book had "wine" as a genre. When I clicked on the link, it took me here. You might find something there as well if you weed through them.

message 12: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60157 comments Here's a cosy mystery series - The Wine Trail Mysteries. The 3rd book would be the only one not accepted.

Katrisa | 4508 comments Carrie wrote: "Hi there! For the Art/Literature "Nay" task, can we read a book in the Dark Tower series itself? I'm probably going to read book 2 next year."

Carrie, I am planning to reread The Dark Tower series next year! Here are a couple places I found for slotting the books - though I don't know what tasks you have.

Card 19 Sci/Nay - Wolves of the Calla has lightning on cover Wolves of the Calla (The Dark Tower, #5) by Stephen King or Card 2 Sports/Nay it also has wheat/tall grass

And The Wind Through the Keyhole (The Dark Tower, #4.5) by Stephen King can be used for Card 23 Sports/Nay - wild animal on cover

message 14: by Katrisa (last edited Dec 23, 2019 09:28PM) (new)

Katrisa | 4508 comments Carrie - I am a bit fuzzy since it's been a minute since I read the series, but I am pretty sure Wizard and Glass (The Dark Tower, #4) by Stephen King has a competition/contest in it (Card 26 SPorts/Nay) but I'll have to wait to reread it to be sure! It looks like it could work for Card 27 Art/Nay - house on cover too

I don't have this task but in reading other card pages it looks like there is a train with smoke on cover task too (Card 16 Science/Yay) and The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower, #3) by Stephen King

Another task I don't have but wish I did - card 28 Science/Nay flower not orchid on cover The Dark Tower (The Dark Tower, #7) by Stephen King will work

message 15: by Carrie (last edited Dec 30, 2019 12:11PM) (new)

Carrie (cseydel) | 252 comments Thanks Katrisa! It seems I have a different edition of Wolves of the Calla, which doesn't have lightning on the cover. I don't have Wind through the Keyhole, I'll have to look for that one. Of course I doubt I'll read all of them next year, but I hope to get 2 and 3 done!

The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly is a really cute book. There's also The Dog Who Dared to Dream by the same author, but only 169 pages :(

Shirley | 1518 comments Some suggestions.
Geography Nay Setting is North or South KoreaNorth Korea Journal
Entertainment Yay Author is a Mary, Edith or Sybil
The Inheritance of Solomon Farthing by Mary Paulson-Ellis The River Capture by Mary Costello
History Yay The title contains a word in which "hunt" is a root word. The Hunting Party
Sport Nay Cover has a glass of wine, or bottle of wine on it. Honestly, We Meant Well by Grant Ginder

Jayme | 4594 comments For Geography: Nay Task - Setting is North or South Korea if you like nonfiction - Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea ( I read this and it was fascinating and heart wrenching). Also, The Girl with Seven Names: A North Korean Defector’s Story. I haven't read this one, but a friend did and highly recommended it - I'm reading it for the challenge.

message 20: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2562 comments For History Yay could use The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter or The Red Hunter. I just used the latter for the cow task instead (card 5 Science Yay)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I would be very curious to hear your thoughts on that one Niloo! We started a buddy read with 4 or 5 people some time ago, and only one of us finished it. It has very good reviews though, so I'm not sure why we were so out of line.

Yes, it will work.

It was a dnf for me mainly because it's a long read and I was trying to rush it and getting frustrated. I hope to get back to it someday.

Normally I wouldn't because they are quite small. But choices seem to be limited with the specification of wine on the cover, so I will accept it.

It is a tough one to answer, Mary Ann.

I have four on my series spreadsheet, with exactly eight books Irene Adler by Carole Nelson Douglas. Good Night, Mr. Holmes is the first book in the series. We can read any book in the series, so I am reading the second one for my challenge task.

I believe Dread Empire by Glen Cook has 8 books, but there may be more. I guess I should check and update my list. A Shadow of All Night Falling is the first one. I am on book #4 in this series.

The Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica by James A. Owen has 8 books. I love this series, especially the audiobooks narrated by James Langdon. Here, There Be Dragons is the first one. I am on #5 in this series.

The Discworld Series by Terry Pratchett has a sub series of 8 books in the City Watch Series. The first one is Guards! Guards!

I am sure there are more out there. Maybe Janice has some suggestions for you.
