Each number corresponds with the spot on the board.
For colors: The cover has to be at least 50%
For locations: As long as the book takes part at all in the given location .
For Shelves: Any book on the given shelf
For Publication Years: I'll be using how GR has it's publication date listed.
For Authors Names: The first, middle, or last name of the author is ok.
For Cover Items: Must have the given item on the cover
For Titles: Only the first word of the title. A, An, And, and The do not count.
So if the letter is B: The Best Day would be ok. Dear Betty would not be ok.

Catherine | 880 comments Hi teamies....it's great to be doing tis again :) can't wait to get started

I don't want to be captain....I'll leave that distinguished honour for someone else :)

Jodi (jojolyn) | 673 comments Hi Team! I live in Ohio, EST. I am a 3-4 books/week reader. :) I can't wait to get started! This is my second time doing this challenge, I don't think I am up to being captain yet.

message 8: by Minttu (new)

Minttu (menthae) | 143 comments Oh hi team :)

I'm Minttu from Finland joining in for the 3rd time! Mother of two young kids with a hectic life. Also participating in the craziness of Nanowrimo at the moment and supposedly writing my great novel, but mostly procrastinating and staring the computer screen blankly. Reading two books a week is my maximum these days. I vaguely remember the time when 3-4 was possible :D

I would offer to be a captain, but my life has done a bit of a surprise attack last week and my dad is in a hospital and all plans have gone sideways. I don't think this will affect my reading, but I'll be in touch with Jenne just in case, so if I need to step out there will be someone to take my place. In any case I'll be away the first two weeks of January and someone will be stepping in to cover for me.

I can help the captain with the rolls if needed & other stuff too. I just think it is better it is someone who can for sure be here all through the challenge.

I'm so excited to pick the first book!

Angie ~aka Reading Machine~ (wolffaerie17) | 2160 comments I'll be captain.

Wow there are that many of these?! I read the first one in the series and really liked it- I will have to go and put some more on my TBR list. Do you think I would have to read in order?

Catherine | 880 comments have you read Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon ? this series hs book 9 coming out, and a possible book 10!!! and these books are approx. 1000pgs!!

An Irish Country Doctor (Irish Country #1) by Patrick Taylor is mild in comparison!! a mere 400-600pgs and they're humourous too :)

I have not attempted the daunting task of starting that series yet! It's on my tbr list but, wow!! It's amazing that so many pages can come out of one person!

message 34: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 880 comments well... Diana Gabaldon does have history to contend with as well! lol these books follow history pretty well...from 1743 onwards....and she does follow it :) if you like history...you're in for a treat.

Partrick Taylor doesn't do that, but he does write in a humourous way...if you've ever read James Herriot...you're sure to like these too:)

Read: The Silent Girl (Rizzoli & Isles, #9) by Tess Gerritsen
Completed: 11/17/14
Rating: ****

People are dying and it all leads back to a murder/suicide in Chinatown 19 years prior. Rizzoli and crew are following leads as people are dying. A retired cop reaches out and says "It's all about the girls." This leads the to the reason behind the murder/suicide and the justice someone is carrying out.

I liked this book, it started out slow for me but did pick up.

I read Restless Spirits by Kathy Bryson
Rating 21/2 stars
Finished 11/19
Review- Marilee Harper is just about to lose her job, a job she desperately needs since she's spent most if her savings helping her mom through a serious illness. Her mother helps by arranging a new job, being the manager of a new B&B, without Marilee's knowledge. The renovated inn is the site of a very old sanitarium that is rumored to be haunted. The catch is that Marilee's opinionated mother is part of the deal, and they both move into the B&B. Their relationship is fairly volatile, with lots of squabbling. John Smith, the new owner, takes to Marilee immediately, even though she is brash and bossy, and their relationship soon takes a predictable turn.
From the beginning the paranormal activity presents itself-flashing lights, balls rolling around- but the employees and residents seem to regard in a curious way but aren't startled or even very scared- hmmm. And then the story really twists with the introduction of more 'characters' from town and a Shakespeare play. The 'restless spirits' may be more than ghosts of former hospital patients, and the current residents may find themselves in the midst of a war between creatures we believed were only found in fairy tales.

I've read a bunch of reviews for this book and have found myself in the category of not liking a book that a lot of others did again. I didn't find Marilee very funny- she was harsh and yelled a lot which she claimed was showing her strength. Unleashing a bad temper isn't strong to me. I didn't live her relationship with her mother- they were pretty enmeshed and had a lot to say to and about each other. And I never understoid her connection with John smith- he was smitten right from the start after she ran him over with her car. And when we veered off the road of ghosts onto Fairy Lane at around 70% of the story I was really confused! Not sure who the restless spirits even were at the end! Sigh....

The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo
By Yangsze Choo

Finished: 20th Nov
Rating: 5 stars

Review:
This is one of those books I knew I would love based on the synopsis I read. After reading the first page I knew I was reading a book that would go to my Favorites list. I absolutely loved this one. It ticked all the boxes. Set in exotic location. Historical romance and with a hint of supernatural mystery. Written with descriptive and magical language. Feminist undertones. It has it all.

The Ghost Bride is a story of Li Lan, a daughter of a good family that has gone bankrupt. Her father has isolated himself after the death of her mother and together with their dire financial situation that has left Li Lan's prospects for marriage slim.

A rich family approaches her father and asks her to become a ghost bride and marry their dead son. She would live in their mansion and be well taken care of, but she can't imagine such faith. Soon after she begins to have dreams where the ghost of her husband candidate visits her pulling her into the afterlife. Meanwhile Li Lan meets another man she likes but who is no longer someone she can marry because she is poor and he is rich and such marriage can't be approved by the man's family.

This book for me was a bit like Memoirs of a Geisha. The impossible love and the unknown and miraculous world so different from my own. I am a fan of stories like this. I also loved the creepy aspects of the underworld reaching out to touch the normal people. And the writing was just so beautiful.

Review: I love Patrick Taylor' Irish Country Doctor tales...this is his latest in the series. in this book, he is recollecting his time during WWII. he has done flashbacks before in his other book, nut in this he sticks solely to WWII and his time on Warspite, and we find out a bit more about his fincee Diedre who has been mentioned before, in passing, as a casualty of the war....and we find out how everyone else was dealing with war troubles. but i addition we meet Barry's father on Warspite.

Angie ~aka Reading Machine~ (wolffaerie17) | 2160 comments That's okay Catherine. I'll have our two spots posted in awhile.
