R4: Seven Wonders of the Reading World (7)

Space 47
Title: The Mapping of Love and Death by Jacqueline Winspear - number 7 in the Maisie Dobbs series
Read: 12/19/14
Rating: 4 stars
Review
This series has yet to bore or disappoint me. Maisie is juggling a seemly impossible case of murder with concerns over the mortal illness of her mentor, Maurice Blanche and the return home of her assistant Billy's wife, Doreen, who has just spent months in a mental institution. The victim of the crime was a young American cartographer, Michael Clifton who was killed during WW I. His papers refer to an English nurse, with whom he'd fallen in love. Land ownership also plays a role - Michael had a bit of land and his family wants it. Someone is also willing to hurt Maisie if she gets in their way. It' s a lot for one private detective to handle. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

I'm on the fence about this book. One the one hand it was a cute fusion of Arthurian Legend/Watership Down/Braveheart. On the other hand, there were times when it was too much and I had to force myself to continue reading.
The plot revolves around the siege of the Abbey of Redwall in the countryside of Mossflower Woods, populated by a benevolent order of mice. The hero is a young novice by the name of Matthias, who wants more than anything to be like the legendary Martin the Warrior, the abbey's historical defender. The villain is Cluny the Scourge, a mangey one-eyed rat and his army of criminals and malcontents who are determined to take over the Abbey and enslave the inhabitants.
Matthias, originally a dreamy, clumsy youngster, emerges as a masterful leader. While coordinating the defense of the Abbey, he and his friends are desperately trying to solve the riddle of Martin the Warrior's sword, which mysteriously disappeared after his death and which holds the key to defeating Cluny. Matthias faces down warlike sparrows, a hostile band of shrews, a rodent-devouring owl and a diabolical adder to retrieve the sword and save the inhabitants of Mossflower Woods. There are a number of memorial animal characters that aid him in his quest, including Constance the Badger, the aged Brother Mathuselah, the former 'military man' Basil Stag Hare and Cornflower, a pretty field mouse who is Matthias' love interest.
It wasn't a horrible book by any means. I'm not a huge fantasy fan, so that may have been part of the problem. There were times when I thought it was just a little bit too cute. I'm not sure whether or not I'll continue on with the series or not. I think I'll give it one more book before I abandon it completely.

I like small town romances, so happy to discover Virginia Kantra. I didn't like this one as much as the first book, but still enjoyable. I listened on audio and I like the narrator. This one is a second chance romance. It takes a while for them to get together. I do like all the family stuff.

ROLL #6, SPOT #55
Series: John Corey #5

Book: The Lion
Series: #5

Review: I like Nelson DeMille quite a bit, though I generally prefer his stand alone novels to this John Corey series, this one was a bit more enjoyable. Corey wasn't quite as much of a smartass as he usually is because of a crappy personal situation. It made him a bit more human.
ROLL #7, SPOT #59
Series: Temperance Brennan #9

Book: Break No Bones
Series: #9

Review: Didn't measure up to the first several books but I honestly can't say why. The "mystery" just didn't grab me.

This was an unusually confusing installment in the Aimee Leduc Investigations series. There were so many red herrings that it was hard to keep all the plot lines straight. It starts out with Aimee discovering that she may have a half-sister, which quickly gets embroiled in Haitian politics, human trafficking, shamelessly unethical business practices, along with multiple murders. By the time I found out whodunit, it was something of a letdown. I hope the next installment is a bit more tightly plotted.

This is the third book and I did like it. It was a pretty fast read, or in my case, listen. Love that Luke wanted to be a good father to Taylor. Looking forward to next book as it's moving from the Fletcher siblings

Me too lol. It is a new roll time (almost forgot), however Joeera hasn't posted review for roll 7 and her roll 6 review is blank. There is still time for her to post in next 8 hours.
If Joeera doesn't post do I roll or not? Jenne said there is no penalty, but I don't know.

Review: Not a bad book for Mr. Sheldon, but the "romance" portion was absolutely ridiculous and ruined the storyline for me. Pffft!

This series is one of my favourites. I loved this one too. I started reading and didn't want to stop. The way these books are written is so engaging. I loved Kingsley before this book, but Reisz made me love him ever more. There was lots of Søren too. Another great character was Sam, love how good friends she became with Kingsley and all the help she gave in starting the club and how she was the reason for King dressing the way he does. Each book just keeps on getting better, can't wait for more.

Teams will roll on Friday (12/19) two times for two spots. No roll on 12/26. Both book's deadline will be 1/2 and then the game resumes it's normal schedule.
If you feel you won't be able to manage either holiday's rolls that's ok. Just let your team know and you can skip those rolls without penalizing the team.
