b. man protagonist - Forever a Stranger and Other Stories (Indonesia). About a friendship between a Javanese and Dutch boy that deteriorates over their lives due to their increased awarness of social difference under colonialism.
2. Canadian
a. about Canada- The Tin Flute (Canada)- about the St. Henri neighbourhood of Montreal during WWII
b. about another country - Under the Volcano (About a British consul in Mexico)
3. Under 30
a. main character under 30- The Ghost Road (Solomon Islands and England). One of the 2 main characters is a young officer in WWI
b. main character over 30- A Ballad for Georg Henig (Bulgaria). About the decline of an elderly violin maker.
4. Atheist
a. main chracter an atheist/book dealing in atheism/humanism- The History of the Siege of Lisbon(Portugal). About a staunchly irreligious but patriotic Portugese book editor trying to create an honest account about the crusaders taking Lisbon back from the Moors.
b. main character religious/book dealing with religion- Black Box(Israel). About the letters exchanged between Jewish divorcees and their family members between Israel and the UK/US. One of the themes the book explores is Zionism.
5. Acadian heritage
a. Book about Acadians- Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie. Epic poem about the trials of a woman named Evangeline during the Acadian Explusion.
b. Book about a cultural heritage I don't share- The Guide(India). About religious culture in India/a false guru.
6. Scientist/academic
a. Book about Science/academia or about a scientist- In Search of Klingsor (Mexican author- set mostly in Germany). About a physicist and mathematician's mission to uncover the identity of “Klingsor” the chief Nazi science advisor during WWII.
b. Book about another career field- The Charterhouse of Parma (Italy). About spies/soliders/nobility/and a member of the clergy.
7. From the working class
a. Book about the working class/working class main character- Germinal (France). About a French miners strike in the 1860s.
b. Book about the affluent/affluent main character- The Idiot(Russia). The main chracter is literally a Prince.
8. Leftist/progressive
a. Book with leftist/progressive themes or with a leftist/progressive main character- The Untouchable (UK/Russia/France). About a former British communist who worked as a spy for the Soviet Union (based largely on the story of Anthony Blunt).
b. Book with conservative/traditionalist themes or with a conservative/traditionalist main character- Coming Up for Air (UK). Satire about a moderate/traditionalist who equates modernization and the destruction of pastoral England with progressivism.
9. Childless
a. Book about a childless character (preferably a woman): The Flamethrowers (Italy/U.S). About a childless female artist in the the 70s who spends time in Italy during the student riots.
b. Book about parents/raising children- The Man Who Loved Children (Australian author: setting US/Singapore). Book about a dysfunctional family with 6 children
10. Anglophone and francophone
a. Book originally in French or English (going to go with French for variety)- The Opposing Shore (French book about a war between fictional Mediterranean microcountries).
b. Book originally in a language I don't speak- The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr (German book about a German composer and his sentient cat)
