The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton. I LOVED this book as a teenager. I believe it is responsible for my passion for powerful, realistic characters. It is as powerful today as it was then.
I read Battle Cries and Lullabies: Women in War from Prehistory to the Present by Linda Grant De Pauw.De Pauw presents an overview of the roles women performed in warfare. She doesn't get into much depth partly because of the paucity of available documentation in the early centuries and partly because of the wide scope of her book. But it is a good survey with extensive notes and bibliography available for those interested in researching the subject further.

Since I last posted what I was reading, I read Skin Game (book 15 in Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series) and Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly.Skin Game was awesome, and Lilac Girls was great though heartbreaking.
I read Praise Song for the Butterflies by Bernice L. McFadden. It describes the practice of ritual servitude in Africa. It was good except for the ending which I thought was a little improbable.

Read A General Theory of Oblivion by José Eduardo Agualusa. It's about the 1970s Angolan war for independence. It has an unusual format and focuses on a woman who locks herself up in her apartment for 30 years to avoid the turmoil.My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I finished Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli. The novel has a complex structure with several interlocking threads. The parents are archivists, the father documenting the sounds of land once inhabited by Apaches; the mother documenting the harrowing journey of migrant children.
