Born in Sweden to Indian and Swedish parents, Gita Trelease has lived in lots of places, including New York, Paris, and a tiny town in central Italy. She attended Yale College and New York University, where she earned a Ph.D. in British literature. I actually lived there for five months after I graduated from college, when I had zero idea what I wanted to do with my life. Some friends were going and I tagged along at the last minute, knowing at least I'd have a place to stay. I found a job teaching English to business people, which was weirdly fun, and spent the rest of my days exploring. Paris certainly inspired me; the city is an important character in my book.(less)

In ENCHANTEÉ, magic is worked by using sorrow to transform things, which speaks both to the situation of the poor and the sweeping social changes occurring at the time of the French Revolution.(less)
