Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read The Marsh Arabs. It provided a fascinating glimpse into a way of life that had existed for many centuries in southern Iraq. The loss of this ancient culture and way of life is devastating.

Jill Kramer (jillkramer) | 26 comments I'm currently slogging through Annie Proulx's Barkskins and I'm on the verge of giving up on it. Proulx is a magnificent writer but about 1/3 of the way through this book she's stopped telling a story and is simply recounting the two sides of an ideological argument. Boooooring. Anyone else read it? Does it get any better? and if so how much more of this garbage do I have to wade through?

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read The Keepers of the House by Shirley Ann Grau. It chronicles several generations of the Howland family in a rural Alabama community. The narrative begins in the early 1800s and concludes in the 1960s. It deals with the deleterious impact of racism.
A very powerful novel. I gave it 5 stars.

It's about assassinations throughout history and was pretty good, actually.

message 1471: by Robert (new)

Robert Collins Yesterday evening I finished Waistcoats & Weaponry, the third book in Gail Carriger's "Finishing School" series. Lots of fun! I liked how the plot moved in one direction, then ramped up and took a turn in the last quarter of the book. The characters are great as well. I hope to start on the last book in the series this weekend.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read Women & Power: A Manifesto by Mary Beard.
I thought it was good as far as it goes, but I wish she had developed it a little more by suggesting how we can transform the power structure to make it more conducive to feminist principles.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read There There, an incredibly powerful novel about urban Native Americans. It is Tommy Orange's debut novel and it is spectacular. It's one of the best books I've read all year. The voice is strong, full of rage, and gut-wrenching. Highly recommended.

My five-star review.
