J. (jdrew) | 153 comments I am just starting Ancillary Sword (Imperial Radch #2) by Ann Leckie Ancillary Sword as part of a group read here at GR. So far barely started but to me it feels like something is different about the way it is written compared to the first book in the series. Maybe it's just me or maybe I don't remember the first book as well as I think I do.

Bruce E. | 159 comments I'm reading "Oz Reimagined" It is a group of short stories that either take place in Oz or related to the concept of Oz. I have disliked none and have liked about hlf a great deal. As a group they are painting a mosaic that is more than the individual stories. The stories relate to the original books by Baum, bur are clearly influenced by McGuire. I would not call any of them children's stories.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I finished The Whale Road The Whale Road (Oathsworn, #1) by Robert Low by Robert Low.

This was a radical departure from the books I normally read. It took me outside of my reading comfort zone, (a good thing), and immersed me in the male culture of Viking raiders of 965 C.E. It was a fast-paced, action-packed novel with more slashed limbs and bloody battle scenes than I care to count. In spite of some of its flaws, I found myself being swept up in the excitement.

I will pick up the second book in the series eventually. But not quite yet. There is only so much male breast-thumping and sword brandishing I can handle in any given time.

Margaret Reece | 3 comments I am reading "In the 'Name of the Family'" by Sarah Dunant. It is a historical novel about the Boria family, Pope and his children. It is the second part of the story. The first part is in "Blood and Beauty." It is set in the early 1500 in Italy. I highly recommend Sarah Dunant's books if you like historical novels. She makes history come to life as real people.

Cathy Skendrovich | 49 comments I just finished Come Sundown, by Nora Roberts, which was a disappointment (see my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...), and am now reading If Not for You, by Debbie Macomber, which is just lovely, and true to life.

Sylvia Kane | 2 comments I'm reading several right now:

1. There's Something You Should Know by E. Barnes
I'm 1/4 of the way through and I love it! It's a new book by an indie author. I love the language and the way it makes me reflect on the ideas it presents.

2. Heartbreaker (Filthy Dirty Love) by Stacey Kennedy
This is a fun, steamy erom. It's fast paced and easy to get into.

3. Christmas at the Comfort Food Cafe by Debbie Johnson
I love everything Christmas, and this seems like a feel-good Christmasy novel. :) I just started it but it's fun.

Happy Reading!

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments After a series of stops and starts, I finally finished
Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype by Clarissa Pinkola Estés.

I took it slowly to digest her analysis and discussion. I read it when it first came out in 1992. It was interesting to see that some of the passages I underlined 25 years ago still resonated with me today. But there were whole sections which meant little to me then but were particularly meaningful to me now. I don't know if that is because I am wiser or just a whole lot older. I suspect it's the latter.

Theresa (theresa99) | 534 comments I'm reading William Bradshaw and Fool's Gold by Arthur Daigle . It is the 4th book of the William Bradshaw series and is pretty good so far!

message 927: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I just finished 'An Ordeal of Innocence' by Agatha Christie (was a bit disappointed. Like PBS series better)

And 'The Dead and Their Vaulted Arches' by Alan Bradley (love his writing style)

Now I'm looking for a book I saw on my favorite soap 'The Tortured and Twisted Minds of Classic Composers', or something like that--2016 or 17. It's a black book with white piano keys across it. I really want to read this. But my daughter swears it was just a prop on the show because she googled it and can't find it anywhere.

My question is, why would they tease me like that? Has anyone else heard of this book?

message 928: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I finished Boudica: Dreaming the Eagle Boudica Dreaming the Eagle (Boudica, #1) by Manda Scott by Manda Scott, a historical novel about Boudica, the Celtic warrior credited with challenging the Roman Empire when it invaded Britain in the 1st century C.E. It is the first in a series of four novels.
Although the novel had its shortcomings, I thought it was a compelling read. I enjoyed it and plan to read the rest of the series.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I finished Bright Air Black by David Vann. Based on Euripides' play, it is Medea's story told from Medea's point of view. All I can say is wow! It is an astounding work of imagination.

Vann takes us inside Medea's mind as we follow her thoughts and watch her perform her diabolical deeds. But it isn't a book for everyone because the descriptions are very graphic.

I thought it was a brilliant novel. I gave it five stars and listed it as a favorite.

Yes I've been loving the Alan Bradley series. Haven't quite read them all yet but I'm now doing it in order as I realised there are developments in one book that affect the next. I have two more to go.

message 932: by Sophia (new)

Sophia James (sophia100) | 26 comments I am about 3 quarters through a book called The boy on the Beach by Andrew Blair. A really interesting story. The beach in question is in Phukhet Thailand at the time of the Tsunami. The boy is an 11 year old ice cream seller fighting to survive the disaster.
The book moves through 15 years and contains elements I really enjoy. It is tale about revenge and lost love but there is also a hint of the supernatural. It also gives a nod, and is influenced by, The Count of Monte Christo and the hero, or anti-hero depending on your viewpoint, references this and sees himself as a modern day Dantes.
The author has self-published and the e-book needs a little editing as there are a few niggling mistakes but it is a very good and unusual story and I am really enjoying it.

Emelia | 15 comments Just finished, for the 2nd, or is it the 3rd time lol, The Last King: Rome's Greatest Enemy about one of the greatest threats Rome has ever experienced. If you like historical books, this is a great one because there is very little information written on Mithridates. I gave it a 5 easily. Next book is Legend by my all time favorite author David Gemmell ! Doing a BR so this will be fun !

It's book 2 in the series on Boudica, historical fiction about Rome's invasion of Britain. It was quite good, but not as good as the first book in the series. I recommend it with reservations.

What an amazing piece of scholarship! My regret is that it was never assigned and I never read it while I was in graduate school immersing myself in all those hefty novels by women writers. It would have made such a huge difference to my understanding of their work.

It tells the story of a Palestinian family forcibly evicted from their home in the village of Beit Daras by the Israeli military. I gave it three stars because I had mixed feelings about it. Jason Makansi | 26 comments The One Inside by Sam Shepard

I just finished The One Inside, Sam Shepard. I've always had a soft spot for his stories and his plays, and his role has Francis' home town friend in the movie Francis. Shepard writes from an unabashedly male perspective, which these days can be refreshing. It's a pretty easy read though it does move between different POVs (father and son), visions, dreams, etc.

message 948: by Lynda (new)

Lynda Dietz | 354 comments I just finished reading C. Lee McKenzie's Double Negative and absolutely loved it.

Now I'm reading City of Ghosts by J.H. Moncrieff as my next fiction book.

I'm also reading Stephen King's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft and
It Was the Best of Sentences, It Was the Worst of Sentences by June Casagrande.

My plan is to always balance one fiction book with a non-fiction book that helps my editing skills. Right now, I'm between editing jobs, so I have had a little time to read for pleasure and it's been refreshing.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I finished House of Names by Colm Tóibín. It tells the story of political intrigue, devious machinations, human sacrifice, and murder that plague the House of Atreus. I thought the depiction of Clytemnestra was the strongest section of the book. The portrayal of Orestes and Electra paled by comparison.
