Up to chapter 3 (view spoiler)[ It's a good start so far. The sisters are creepy. I like Will's witty banter. I'm not sure how I feel about Tessa yet. She reminds me a lot of Clary and I really hope her character development doesn't go that way too. But it's very similar to the plot line of CoB. Tessa finds out she has powers and learns of the Shadowhunter world. She has an over powered power like Clary. I'm also sure that there will be a love triangle because it's not your typical YA if there's no love triangle (jk...mostly). I like that it's going much faster CoB. I also like that Tessa's power comes at a cost. She sees suffering and feels pain. It makes sense that way. You shouldn't be able to draw and make something out of nothing and be just that. Chapter 13 (view spoiler)[ Well that was a whole 360 on Will. Goodness, I don't get people's need to act like assholes when they're avoiding the truth. Anyway, I'm impressed with Tessa's development in this book. She actually wants to understand people and cares about them. Unlike Clary who just pushes her needs and wants on other people and expect them to go along with it. If not, then she'll do something stupid and get people involved in the process and get her way either way. Anyway, my point is...I like think the level of maturity that Tessa has in this book. I know it's a different series but I just have to point it out... (hide spoiler)]

And a few more thoughts up to chapter 13 (view spoiler)[ I'm starting to doubt the whole Magister being deQuincey thing. It seems way too easy that they figured out everything so quickly and deQuincey got caught with what he's doing and all. I mean yeah he got away but it doesn't add up to me. They depicted the Magister to be some kind of mastermind and deQuincey's secret meetings weren't exactly secret when famous and powerful downwolders were invited to these events and dozens of people are witnessing these crimes. Shadow hunters are bound to find out sooner or later. It just doesn't make sense for the Magister to be risking all his mastermind plans for gaudy shows like that. Idk maybe I'm reading too much into it. (hide spoiler)]

Yeah lol that's just how I am....and I write too much. I like stories that are complex though. Makes the story more fun.

I was buddying with someone else, and one time they commented only on the plot, so like 'and now he did this and this happened and yeah' and nothing on their actual thoughts.. Like, yeah I know, I'm reading the book too. Other times they'd be like 'cool that this happened' and only comment on the one tiny thing in 25% of the book...

Haha no I get what you're saying. I've had people that comment only one liners about something that the character said and nothing about what they think of the story so far.

I just picked up the book from the library today, and am looking forward to reading several chapters tonight! Do you all want to keep to a schedule of a certain # of chapters to read or discuss each day? Or do we want to read at our own pace? :) I'm happy either way, just have to figure out how to place my comments under 'spoiler.'

I have the book ready to go, though I'm reading about 9 books simultaneously (including Clockwork Angel - which I haven't yet started ;D) so it'll be slow going for a while until I can actually finish some! XD;;

I know I personally read at my own pace a lot of the time, but I'm happy to schedule a certain number of chapters to aim for daily c:

At present, I'm trying to aim for a minimum of 50 pages per book daily. Though with some I keep going further once I reach a certain point because they're really interesting ;D

As for placing your comments under spoiler it's simply <.spoiler> to start with and <./spoiler> to finish with (minus the .'s). It will mean that anything written between the two "spoiler" tags will be under a spoiler warning (view spoiler)[just like this (hide spoiler)].

Awesome, thanks Natalie! I think our own pace is probably fine as long as we make certain not to spoil anything for each other :). I am reading a couple other books as well, though not 9! Wow! I don't think I would be able to keep track of them. I tend to get sucked into one of the books and get lost in it and then realize I haven't picked up the others for a while.

I'm about 70 pages into Clockwork Angel now and it has my attention! Everything is happening pretty quickly. There's a lot of information being thrown at the reader and at one of the characters. I wonder if it's expected that most readers have read Clare's other series that this one is a prequel too (Mortal Instruments?). Although it doesn't seem to be a necessity, it just might be a little less confusing with the amount of lingo being thrown around. I actually feel like they are throwing too much at Tessa at the moment.

Well generally for me I'll make sure to post what I'm up to at any given point, so for example,

That way, people know that there are potential spoilers up to and including Chapter 3 and people who haven't gotten that far can have a look once they've gotten past Chapter 3, and people who are at Chapter 4 onwards can read it without spoiling anything ;D

I don't normally read so many at once, but with the monthly challenge I'm trying to read a bunch of BRs in addition to my normal reads so that if the keyword for said book comes up I'm good to go and can earn my team some extra points XD;; I'm not doing too badly at keeping track of everything though. When I was a (young) teenager I used to read upwards of 50 (ongoing) fanfictions at any one time and could keep track of pretty much all of them and just continue where I left off when they were next updated XD

I've read The Mortal Instruments (the first three) before myself, and Clockwork Angel once YEARS ago (all I remember now is (view spoiler)[it has Magnus in it (hide spoiler)]*)... Not sure whether it's expected, but I'm trying to read/re-read the series now that there's so many of them. The shadowhunter wikia actually has a reading order which helps a little. I'm going by publication date myself, though I might change to Triad order. Not sure *shrug*

Okay just hit page 270 (halfway through?). I should be working on some of my other books too, but I totally got sucked into this one last night! Which is good. I was very interested in reading this book, but honestly was not the biggest fan of the Mortal Instruments series so I was worried about how I would like it.

(view spoiler)[ So I don't know about the rest of you, but I have been thinking that de Quincey may not actually be the Magister. I could be completely off base with that, but it seemed too early and easy for them to find out. I've been wondering if it is Mortmain or if he is playing a larger role in some other way. And I am wondering what de Quincey was about to say to the Shadowhunters right before the major fight started.

I am also wondering about Tessa's clockwork angel. No real theories on that, just curious.

I am enjoying how even though Tessa often seems like she is demure and follows society's rules and constraints for women, that she has a good sense of humor and often puts Will in his place. I am looking forward to her hopefully adopting a more modern attitude about women's rights and abilities as she spends more time with the Shadowhunters and sees Charlotte and others fighting alongside the male Shadowhunters and Charlotte running the London Institute.
