This House of Grief by Helen Garner -

He Died With His Eyes Open by Derek Raymond

That's IT - with an opening like that will have to drag the book to the top of the TBR pile!
A winter night, screaming out of Edinburgh. The front car was being chased by three others.

Sorry Brenda I was away from my computer all day. The opening line goes:
"We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold."
It's not so much that first line but the entire first two paragraphs that are brilliant, as the narrator - driving to Vegas - hallucinates an attack by giant bats.

Tell the Truth by Katherine Howell
Opens: Rowan Whylie drove into Playland car park just after ten on a Monday morning in early April, his granddaughter, Emelia, wriggling in her car seat in the back.
Animal Magnetism by Jill Shalvis
Opens: Brady Miller’s ideal Saturday was pretty simple—sleep in, be woken by a hot, naked woman for sex, followed by a breakfast that he didn’t have to cook. I hasten to add he was only getting two out of his 3 ideals - a sleep in and a breakfast in a cafe so he didn't have to cook it ;)
The body lay naked and face down, a deathly grey, spatters of blood staining the snow around it.
