Not a book, but still a first line from the awesome film In Bruges. "After I killed him, I dropped the gun in the Thames, washed the residue off me hands in the bathroom of a Burger King, and walked home to await instructions."
Liam wrote: "God I love In Bruges. I need to watch it again, it's been over a month :P"Its one of my all time favourite movies!!! Ever since I saw that film I've wanted to go to Bruges...I Will Go There one day! :D

Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
Love the book or hate it, the opening paragraph is brilliant.
Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta.
A writer never forgets the first time he accepted a few coins or a word of praise in exchange for a story. The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Another brilliant opening.
A writer never forgets the first time he accepted a few coins or a word of praise in exchange for a story. He will never forget the sweet poison of vanity in his blood and the belief that, if he succeeds in not letting anyone discover his lack of talent, the dream of literature will provide him with a roof over his head, a hot meal at the end of the day, and what he covets the most: his name printed on a miserable piece of paper that surely will outlive him. A writer is condemned to remember that moment, because from then on he is doomed and his soul has a price.
"Here we are, standing at the corner of "Walk, Don't Walk.""Trudy in The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe by Jane Wagner.
Classic! My absolute favourite line from a book.
Michael wrote: ""On the day of the miracle, Isabel was kneeling at the cliff's edge, tending the small, newly made driftwood cross." The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman"
Ioved this book and reading this bought back memories.

Primrose Cottage sat at the very end of Johnson's Lane, an enchantingly pretty little house with wisteria snaking into the low roof and rose bushes clustering up to peer in the windows. Christmas Magic

Me also. Love Bel Canto.
My long read at the moment, the one that I pick up and put down between lighter stuff is Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empire's Slaves by Adam Hochschild. I like the opening sentence very much. It begins:'Strangely, in a city where it seems that on almost every block a famous event or resident is commemorated by a blue and white glazed plaque, none marks this spot.'
It relates to the origins of the anti-slavery movement in London in the 1700s.
A long time favourite, from Lord of the Rings Book 1 The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien"When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton."
