Sally906 | 86 comments Started two new books - my 'at work' read and my 'late at night fluffy' read

At work:
The Dirty Chef: From Big City Food Critic to Foodie Farmer by Matthew Evans - love his TV show Gourmet Farmer
Opens: “…There wasn’t much blood. Just a trickle from a perfectly round hole only a few millimetres wide. But the pain. Oh, the pain…”

Late night fluffy:
Resorting to Murder by K.J. Emrick - Cosy Mystery
Opens: “…'You're the most beautiful girl I know, Darcy Sweet.'…”

They're both Aussy authors

Sharon Robards (sharonrobards) | 944 comments Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

Love the book or hate it, the opening paragraph is brilliant.

Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta.

message 73: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Robards (sharonrobards) | 944 comments A writer never forgets the first time he accepted a few coins or a word of praise in exchange for a story.

The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

Another brilliant opening.

A writer never forgets the first time he accepted a few coins or a word of praise in exchange for a story. He will never forget the sweet poison of vanity in his blood and the belief that, if he succeeds in not letting anyone discover his lack of talent, the dream of literature will provide him with a roof over his head, a hot meal at the end of the day, and what he covets the most: his name printed on a miserable piece of paper that surely will outlive him. A writer is condemned to remember that moment, because from then on he is doomed and his soul has a price.

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments My long read at the moment, the one that I pick up and put down between lighter stuff is Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empire's Slaves by Adam Hochschild. I like the opening sentence very much. It begins:
'Strangely, in a city where it seems that on almost every block a famous event or resident is commemorated by a blue and white glazed plaque, none marks this spot.'
It relates to the origins of the anti-slavery movement in London in the 1700s.
